Posterior maxillary segmental osteotomy concomitant with sinus lift using a piezoelectric device.

Tooth loss evokes functional and esthetic problems, and adjacent teeth can move if they are not corrected in a timely manner, rendering the problems of restoring the dentition more complex. If the opposing tooth is consequently extruded, several treatment modalities may be adopted, such as occlusal adjustment, crown prosthesis, orthodontic treatment, and segmental osteotomy. Segmental osteotomy is the most aggressive and invasive treatment for restoring a problematic occlusal plane due to the complications, such as hemorrhage, loss of tooth vitality, or necrosis of the segment. Origami-Mediated Low-Voltage Electret Soft Robotic Actuators for Human-Machine Haptic Interfaces.

Soft robotic actuators often require relatively high driving voltages, which limit their portability, safety, and compatibility with compact electronic systems in wearable haptic interfaces. Achieving strong electromechanical coupling at low voltage while maintaining mechanical compliance remains a key challenge for soft actuator design. Here, we present an origami-mediated low-voltage electret soft robotic actuator that integrates mechanical compliance and electrical functionality within a symmetric multilayer architecture. Two double-layer fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) electret films

Design, Manufacturing, Tribology, and Performance of Microgears and Microgear Trains: A Critical Review of Mechanical Power Transmission at the Microscale.

Microgears enable mechanical power transmission, speed reduction, motion conversion, and synchronization in compact devices ranging from microelectromechanical systems to miniature robots and optically driven micromachines. Their behavior cannot, however, be inferred by geometrically scaling conventional gears alone. As size decreases, relative manufacturing errors, surface forces, friction, adhesion, environmental sensitivity, and metrological uncertainty become increasingly important, while torque capacity and stored kinetic energy decrease rapidly. This critical review integrates the design

A novel method for the detection of point mutation in DNA using single-base-coded CdS nanoprobes.

A novel method for DNA point mutation detection using single-base-coded CdS nanoparticle probes is proposed. Target DNA was immobilized on core/shell Fe(3)O(4)/Au magnetic nanoparticles. Single-base-coded CdS nanoparticles, such as guanosine coded CdS (G-CdS), cytidine coded CdS (C-CdS), thymidine coded CdS (T-CdS) and adenosine coded CdS (A-CdS) were used as the probes to identify the mutation sites in DNA strand. The hybridization process of single-base-coded CdS nanoparticle probes with the mutation sites in DNA was monitored using piezoelectric quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The hybrid

Intravital Microscopy of the Beating Murine Heart to Understand Cardiac Leukocyte Dynamics.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of worldwide mortality. Intravital microscopy has provided unprecedented insight into leukocyte biology by enabling the visualization of dynamic responses within living organ systems at the cell-scale. The heart presents a uniquely dynamic microenvironment driven by periodic, synchronous electrical conduction leading to rhythmic contractions of cardiomyocytes, and phasic coronary blood flow. In addition to functions shared throughout the body, immune cells have specific functions in the heart including tissue-resident macrophage-facilitated electrica

Flexible multi-electrode array with integrated bendable CMOS-chip for implantable systems.

Micro-electrodes and micro-electrode arrays (MEAs) for stimulating neurons or recording action potentials are widely used in medical applications or biological research. For medical implants in many applications like brain implants or retinal implants there is a need for flexible MEAs with a large area and a large number of stimulation electrodes. In this work a flexible MEA with an embedded flexible silicon dummy CMOS-chip facing these challenges has been designed, manufactured and characterized. This approach offers the possibility by connecting and addressing several of these MEAs via a bus

Evaluation of Qualitative Changes in Simulated Periodontal Ligament and Alveolar Bone Using a Noncontact Electromagnetic Vibration Device with a Laser Displacement Sensor.

Evaluating periodontal tissue condition is an important diagnostic parameter in periodontal disease. Noncontact electromagnetic vibration device (NEVD) was previously developed to monitor this condition using mechanical parameters. However, this system requires accelerometer on the target tooth. This study assessed application of laser displacement sensor (LDS) to NEVD without accelerometer using experimental tooth models. Tooth models consisted of cylindrical rod, a tissue conditioner, and polyurethane or polyurethane foam to simulate tooth, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, respective

Contact activation of blood coagulation on a defined kaolin/collagen surface in a microfluidic assay.

Generation of active Factor XII (FXIIa) triggers blood clotting on artificial surfaces and may also enhance intravascular thrombosis. We developed a patterned kaolin (0 to 0.3 pg/μm(2))/type 1 collagen fibril surface for controlled microfluidic clotting assays. Perfusion of whole blood (treated only with a low level of 4 μg/mL of the XIIa inhibitor, corn trypsin inhibitor) drove platelet deposition followed by fibrin formation. At venous wall shear rate (100 s(-1)), kaolin accelerated onset of fibrin formation by ~100 sec when compared to collagen alone (250 sec vs. 350 sec), with little effec

[Direct acoustic cochlear stimulation for therapy of severe to profound mixed hearing loss: Codacs™ Direct Acoustic Cochlear Implant System].

OBJECTIVE: Implantable hearing aids have become a valid option for the therapy of various forms of hearing loss. The Codacs™ Direct Acoustic Cochlear Implant System is the first vibratory implant available for patients with severe to profound mixed hearing loss (MHL). By directly coupling sound energy into the perilymph, a very high maximum power output (MPO) is achieved over a broad frequency range. Via a conventional stapedotomy, the vibratory energy of the electromagnetic actuator is transferred directly to the perilymph through the oval window. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This article describes

2D Nanomaterials Toward Function-Ready Superlubricity in Advanced Microsystems.

The rapid evolution of micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems defines a new frontier of intelligent miniaturization, where interfacial friction and wear emerge as the fundamental bottlenecks limiting functional reliability and energy efficiency. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with van der Waals layered structures have redefined the pursuit of superlubricity, where the interfacial potential corrugation is minimized by lattice incommensurability, and energy dissipation is further suppressed through phonon spectrum mismatch and charge-mediated coupling at the sliding interface. These atomis

Advanced Cardiac Rhythm Management by Applying Optogenetic Multi-Site Photostimulation in Murine Hearts.

Ventricular tachyarrhythmias are a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Electrical defibrillation using high-energy electric shocks is currently the only treatment for life-threatening ventricular fibrillation. However, defibrillation may have side-effects, including intolerable pain, tissue damage, and worsening of prognosis, indicating a significant medical need for the development of more gentle cardiac rhythm management strategies. Besides energy-reducing electrical approaches, cardiac optogenetics was introduced as a powerful tool to influence cardiac activity using light-sen

Novel Silicone Rubber-Based Multi-Dimensional Filler Composite Electrode Materials for the Dielectric Elastomer Actuation Technology of Micro-Crawling Robots.

Aiming to develop high-performance flexible electrode materials for dielectric elastomer actuation systems applied to micro-crawling robots, this study proposes multi-dimensional filler composite electrode materials with a methyl vinyl silicone rubber matrix. Three types of conductive fillers-namely, zero-dimensional super-conductive carbon black, one-dimensional single-walled carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional flaky micron-sized silver powder-were employed to construct a hierarchical multi-dimensional conductive network within the silicone rubber matrix via a three-stage fabrication strate

Non-elastic membrane dual-actuation liquid lens for continuous focus and zoom.

Miniaturization is crucial for technological advancement and innovation. Simplifying systems, reducing device size, and integrating multiple functions remain limiting factors for the miniaturization of optical imaging systems. Liquid lenses offer compact structure, fast response, and no mechanical parts, demonstrating potential for miniaturized imaging and rapid focusing. However, existing designs focus primarily on single-focus function, failing to simultaneously achieve fast continuous focusing, zoom capability, and reliable sealing in practical applications. This has resulted in limitations

Enhanced denitrification and acetochlor degradation in biochar-microelectric field constructed wetlands treating agricultural runoff: Performance, carbon release and microbial response.

To address the challenge of nitrate (NO3--N) and herbicide acetochlor (ACT) co-contamination in intensive agricultural runoff, this study developed a biochar-coupled micro-electric field constructed wetland system (BC-MEF-CWs). The aim was to enhance the electrochemical activity of the biochar medium via a micro-electric field (MEF), thereby synergistically improving simultaneous removal of NO3--N and ACT, while characterizing substrate-extractable organic matter (SEOM) and microbial community responses. Results showed that, at influent concentrations of 30.6 mg L-1 NO3--N and 97.9 μg L-1 ACT,

A composite conductive hydrogel loaded with alginate/gelatin microspheres with micro-environmentally induced smart temporal regulation for acute myocardial infarction treatment.

Designing a temporal regulation system for responsive stem cell delivery that simultaneously addresses micro-environmental improvement in the infarcted area and electromechanical coupling compensation through synergistic stem cell therapy continues to pose substantial research challenges. We present a micro-environmentally induced smart temporal regulation composite conductive hydrogel for myocardial infarction therapy. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSC) were seeded on alginate (Alg)/gelatin (GT) composite microspheres (Alg/GT), which were encapsulated into reactive oxygen species (ROS) respons

Intelligent Acousto-Electrical Metamaterials (IAM) for Sound Source Detection.

Acoustic transducers are essential for object localization and environmental sensing. Conventional transducers rely on piezoelectric crystals, whose acoustic-electric response is fixed by the crystal lattice's inherent asymmetry and orientation. This results in static coupling behavior, necessitating bulky arrays of rigid elements with complex wiring and high computational demands for directional sensing. Here, we report a fundamentally new class of acoustic-electric coupling that emerges from topology-governed charge transport in 3D micro-architected piezoelectric metamaterials. Unlike single

Voltage readout from a piezoelectric intracochlear acoustic transducer implanted in a living guinea pig.

The ability to measure the voltage readout from a sensor implanted inside the living cochlea enables continuous monitoring of intracochlear acoustic pressure locally, which could improve cochlear implants. We developed a piezoelectric intracochlear acoustic transducer (PIAT) designed to sense the acoustic pressure while fully implanted inside a living guinea pig cochlea. The PIAT, fabricated using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) techniques, consisted of an array of four piezoelectric cantilevers with varying lengths to enhance sensitivity across a wide frequency bandwidth. Analysis of the influence of a mandibular advancement device on sleep and sleep bruxism scores by means of the BiteStrip and the Sleep Assessment Questionnaire.

PURPOSE: A before-and-after experimental clinical study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effect of a mandibular advancement device (MAD; 75% advancement), made of a thermoplastic material, on sleep bruxism (SB) and sleep scores. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After a habituation period of 1 week, SB scores were taken at baseline and after use of the MAD for 30 days. Scores were compared using the newly developed BiteStrip, which registers the number of contractions of the unilateral masseter muscle after a 5-hour period, giving a severity score from 0 to 3 after the registrations.

Real-time sensing-integrated organoid-on-a-chip platforms: Technological progress and emerging biomedical applications.

As micro-scale 3D tissues self-organized from stem cells, organoids can highly recapitulate the cellular composition and complex spatial architecture of human organs, establishing themselves as pivotal physiological models in biomedical research. Although organoids offer significant advantages in mimicking human physiological structures, traditional monitoring methodologies predominantly rely on destructive endpoint assays, which fail to capture the transient fluctuations inherent in biological processes. To overcome this limitation, we propose the sensing-integrated organoid-on-a-chip, a fron
