The new identitarians: How the behavioral movement and psychology in general have been ideologically captured.

Recent developments within the mental health professions suggest a growing ideological capture by left-wing identitarian frameworks, with significant implications for clinical ethics, scientific integrity, and public health. This article argues that the increasing fusion of psychotherapy with political activism, particularly through the spread of decolonial therapy and related approaches, has contributed to discriminatory practices. This has led to identity-based discrimination toward Jewish clinicians and clients, specifically those who identify as Zionist. We argue that these frameworks impo

[LMBTQ+ youngsters and their families].

Regardless of sexual orientation, we are all socialised in a heteronormative culture and society. 85% of LGBTQ+ people are aware of their sexual identity before the age of 18, and like members of minority groups in general, they are regularly subjected to microaggressions, possibly overt verbal and/or physical abuse and discrimination. One of the most common settings for this is school. If school is left out of sexual education as a socialisation medium and as a representation of society for the child, the family - and the LGBTQ+ child in it - is left with a heavy burden. The tabooed LGBTQ+ se

Nurturing excellence: Evaluating a health professions university leadership training programme in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Effective leadership is essential for the performance of healthcare systems, and university faculty play a key role in educating healthcare professionals. However, in many countries, including Zambia, health professions training does not include substantial leadership training. To address this need, faculty at Zambian universities designed and launched a leadership training programme to equip health professions faculty with the knowledge and skills necessary to impart leadership competencies to their students. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate programme efficacy by assessing changes in train

Anxiety-Related Disorders in the Context of Racism.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The literature on racism and anxiety-related disorders, especially social anxiety, specific phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder, is notably lacking. This report aims to review recent evidence demonstrating the link between racial discrimination and various anxiety-related disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Anxiety-related disorders were the most significant mediator for daily discrimination and suicidal thoughts, above both depression and substance use. Further, studies showed that racial discrimination promotes posttraumatic stress and racial trauma among people of color. Sy

Mentoring Asian American scholars: Stereotypes and cultural values.

Students of color in higher education face myriad challenges that supersede the academic, including feelings of isolation, lack of belongingness, and overt discrimination that confer stress on top of their academic workload. One avenue to tackle these issues and reduce the negative outcomes associated with these stressors is the effective mentoring of scholars of color. Research has typically focused on African American and Latino scholars. Asian American scholars have received less attention despite studies showing high levels of anxiety, depression, isolation, and reported experiences of tar

Exploring Individual and Contextual Factors Associated With Sexual Risk and Substance Use Among Underserved GBQMSM and Transgender and Nonbinary Persons in South Central Appalachia.

Gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men (GBQMSM) and transgender and nonbinary persons are at elevated risk for HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and hepatitis C (HCV); in Appalachia, these communities experience more disease burden. However, little is known about the factors influencing risk. Sixteen semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted examining factors influencing prevention and care. Data were analyzed using constant comparison methodology. Fifteen themes emerged within four domains: social environment (e.g., microaggressions across gender, sexual

A Film Review of Mates: Expanding Perspectives on Sexuality Exploration.

Mates, an independent British gay drama by Arno Crous, released in August 2023. The film explores the emotional intricacies of romantic and sexual discovery within the LGBTQ+ community. The film follows Connor (played by James Wiles), a man grappling with delayed self-acceptance as he navigates romantic advances from another man. Through its portrayal of Connor's struggles to articulate his identity, the movie reflects broader societal challenges, including homophobia, microaggressions, and the lack of safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals. It highlights the emotional toll of societal rejection a

Using virtual reality simulation to address racism in a healthcare setting.

Racism continues to plague Western societies' institutions, including the healthcare system. Despite the evidence of racism's negative impacts on healthcare providers, administrators, patients, and families, healthcare workers report hesitancy in taking action to address racism in the workplace. Simulation, with its experiential pedagogy and foundation in psychological safety, may be an educational tool to support practical training. Guided by a social cognitive view of regulation of learning, we piloted virtual reality (VR) modules focused on addressing bias, privilege, and microaggressions.

"I Know How to Take Care of Myself.": Composite Narratives Among Rural Black Women Coping with Structural Inequities.

The rural mental health crisis is especially pronounced in Black women who are overburdened with social inequities. Persistent poverty and gendered racial microaggressions (GRM) are structural determinants that contribute to the disparities in Black women's health outcomes. Using the Africultural framework and a community-based, qualitative approach, this study illustrates the coping strategies of rural Black women who experience structural inequities. Participants included Black American, rural women in the Alabama Black Belt region. A community meeting (n = 1) was held with 38 participants,

Exploring Overt Racial and Ethnic Conflict in Resident-to-Resident Aggression in Long-Term Care Facilities.

OBJECTIVES: Resident-to-resident aggression (RRA) in long-term care facilities is gaining recognition as a serious problem. Racial/ethnic conflict may be a contributing factor to RRA incidents, but it remains insufficiently studied. Our goal was to explore overt racial/ethnic conflict in RRA. DESIGN: We used quantitative and qualitative secondary analyses of existing data from a large, rigorously conducted study of RRA to describe the involved residents and patterns of overt racial/ethnic conflicts. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The parent study included information of 2011 residents in 10 rando

Introduction to the Special Issue on the Impacts of Systemic Racism and Structural Oppression on Overdose and Substance Use Inequities.

This special issue of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, titled "Confronting the Impacts of Systemic Racism and Structural Oppression on Overdose and Substance Use Inequities," addresses the disproportionate burden of drug overdose and substance use impacts borne by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. While overall overdose mortality rates have fluctuated, deep racial inequities persist and are driven in part by structural oppressive forces, systemic and structural racism, and White supremacy. To move beyond traditional risk-factor epidemiology and reductive "gap gazing
