Transplantation of encapsulated fecal microbiota: research progress and future trends.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) demonstrates significant efficacy in treating intestinal disorders, such as recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). However, traditional FMT relies on invasive delivery methods (e.g., colonoscopy or use of a nasoenteric tube) and lacks standardized donor screening, limiting its widespread clinical adoption and scalability. As a key formulation of live biotherapeutic products (LBPs), encapsulated FMT represents a transition from empirical microbial transfer to engineered biotherapeutics, offering a safer and more convenient approac

[Advances in synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates by using residual activated sludge].

Pure microbial fermentation is the primary means of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production at present, but high cost limits its large-scale application. In recent years, the synthesis of PHA by mixed microbial culture of activated sludge has been extensively studied. Combining the residual sludge treatment with PHA synthesis not only eliminates the sterilization process necessary for pure culture, but also utilizes residual sludge as resource. The hydrolysis and acidification of the residual sludge, the enrichment and acclimation of the consortium and the PHA synthesis are affected by environm

Stoichiometric analysis of microbial communities links function, structure, and biomass carrying capacity.

Microbial communities carry out important ecological functions. Their activities emerge from interactions between species, often potentiated by metabolic traits. We lack a quantitative understanding of how these traits shape community properties. Here, we present theory for microbial communities, leveraging concepts from quantitative microbial physiology. We focus on how steady-state metabolic exchanges between species determine their fractional abundances, given their biomass and byproduct yields on nutrients. We start by deriving formal conditions for the steady states of communities of micr

Integrated lignocellulolytic enzyme production and pretreatment of wheat straw by fungal consortium.

In nature, fungi play a leading role in the biodegradation of organic waste by secreting a broad spectrum of lignocellulolytic enzymes (cellulases, hemicellulases, and ligninases). Inspired by this natural ecological synergy, in the present study, two promising fungal isolates, Trichoderma sp. isolate HR27 and Ganoderma sp. isolate HR31, were isolated and assessed for biocompatibility. Subsequently, their consortium was utilized for single-factorial optimization of various parameters (inoculum size, incubation time, lignocellulosic substrate, temperature, moisture content, pH, surfactant, nitr

Use of mature compost as filter media and the effect of packing depth on hydrogen sulfide removal from composting exhaust gases by biofiltration.

A study was conducted to investigate the utilization of mature compost as a biofilter medium for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from the exhaust gases of the composting process. Source-selected kitchen waste from municipal solid waste was composted in a reactor, and the exhaust gas was passed through a biofilter packed with a 1:4 (wet weight) mixture of mature compost and sand. Two treatments were applied under sterilized and unsterilized conditions to quantify the contribution of microbial activity. The effect of packing depth on H2S removal efficiency was also studied. A global H2S re

Metagenomic sequences from anaerobic chloroform and dichloromethane degrading microbial communities.

Here, we present metagenomes from two cultures derived from an anaerobic microbial consortium used for bioremediation. One culture dechlorinates chloroform to dichloromethane, which is further mineralized to CO2. A second subculture was amended with only dichloromethane. We sought draft genomes of key microorganisms to identify metabolic potential in these consortia.

Performance of distinct microbial based solutions in a Campylobacter infection challenge model in poultry.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) are commonly used within poultry production to improve feed conversion, bird growth, and reduce morbidity and mortality from clinical and subclinical diseases. Due to the association between AGP usage and rising antimicrobial resistance, the industry has explored new strategies including the use of probiotics and other microbial-based interventions to promote the development of a healthy microbiome in birds and mitigate against infections associated with food safety and food security. While previous studies have largely focused on the ability of p

Irradiance level and elevation shape the soil microbiome communities of Coffea arabica L.

BACKGROUND: The nexus plant-microbe-environment is essential to understand the ecosystem processes shaping plant health and fitness. Within this triangle, soils and associated microflora are among the key ecosystem's drivers, underpinning plant productivity and evolution. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis (physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and taxonomic diversity) of soils under the canopy projection of Coffea arabica trees along a gradient of elevation (600, 800, and 900 m) and shade (0, 50, 100%). RESULTS: While shade had no influence on most parameters, alti

Competitive adsorption of heavy metals by anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) consortia.

Anammox-based processes and microbial consortia have drawn extensive attention for their use in high-efficiency wastewater treatment technologies. Metals substantially affect the activity of anammox consortia and the quality of wastewater treatment plant effluent. Here, we explored the role of anammox consortia in terms of metals complexation in both single and multi-metal systems. Adsorption edges of single metal cations indicate that the adsorption preference was in the order: Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cr(VI). A competitive effect was observed in multi-metal cations systems, with Pb(II) being prefer

Deciphering taxon-specific metabolic shifts during pathogenic fungal infection in leaf-cutter ant fungal gardens.

Leaf-cutter ant fungal gardens are a living library of bioeconomy solutions, where the mutualist fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus drives lignocellulose degradation and conversion into valuable bioproducts. However, these gardens are vulnerable to infection by the specialized pathogen Escovopsis weberi, which disrupts garden stability. Despite their ecological importance, the metabolic mechanisms underlying fungal-fungal competition and community-level responses to infection remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we experimentally infected six fungal garden consortia with E. weberi, e

Biodegradation of chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, and lindane by pesticide-tolerant hexa-bacterial consortia with integrated plant growth promoting and biosurfactant production potential.

The extensive use of pesticides has led to persistent agroecosystem contamination, increasing environmental and human-health risks. Rationally designed multifunctional microbial consortia offer a sustainable strategy for degrading complex pesticide mixtures, yet most are empirically assembled, emphasizing degradation efficiency, overlooking pesticide bioavailability and soil restoration. The role of biosurfactant (BS) producing bacteria as keystone members during consortium-based bioremediation remains underexplored. In the present study, 17 Risk Group 1 bacterial isolates exhibiting pesticide

Next-Gen Bioinoculants: Bacterial, Yeast, and Mycorrhizal Consortia for Drought-Tolerance in Lettuce.

Drought is a key factor that affects food production and represents one of the major challenges to global food security, especially with the increasing human population. One of the main strategies to improve drought tolerance in plants has been the use of beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms. However, within the rhizosphere, microorganisms establish diverse relationships with each other and with the host plants, positively or negatively affecting the drought tolerance. To address this complexity, the use of microorganisms that fulfill different niches producing an improved drought stress tole

From heterotrophic monoculture to light-driven coculture: A sustainable platform for PHA biosynthesis and insights into interspecies metabolic interactions.

Microbial consortia combining phototrophic and heterotrophic partners offer a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for producing polyhydroxyalkanoates, which have attracted considerable attention as promising alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics. Here, a synthetic cyanobacteria-heterotroph consortium composed of Synechococcus elongatus and Priestia aryabhattai was employed to produce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) directly from CO2. Transcriptomic analysis of the heterotrophic partner revealed the sucrose-to-PHB biosynthesis pathway and key gene cluster. Optimal coculture conditions were e

Wheat microbiome interactions under climate change: Mechanisms of abiotic stress tolerance and sustainable crop resilience.

Climate change-induced stresses, including drought, heat, and salinity, are increasingly constraining wheat productivity globally and pose a significant threat to global food security. Although beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms are known to enhance wheat stress tolerance, the mechanisms underlying wheat-microbiome interactions under climate-stress conditions remain poorly understood. This review highlights that wheat actively recruits and reshapes stress-resilient microbial communities, particularly members of Bacillus and Pseudomonas, which promote stress adaptation by regulating reactive

Native bacteria mitigate diuron and copper toxicity to microalgae isolated from a chronically contaminated coastal lagoon.

In natural environments, microalgae are invariably associated with bacteria, yet the role of these microbial consortia in modulating microalgal physiological responses to chemical stress remains largely unexplored. This study investigates whether native bacterial communities enhance the tolerance of field-isolated microalgae to toxic compounds. Microalgae-bacteria consortia were isolated from the Mediterranean coastal Or Lagoon (South of France), chronically impacted by herbicides and trace metals. The chlorophyte Chlamydomonas sp. Or2023a and the diatom Entomoneis sp. Or2023b were isolated an

Lead or cadmium co-contamination alters benzene and toluene degrading bacterial communities.

Co-contamination of hydrocarbons with heavy metals in soils often complicates and hinders bioremediation. A comprehensive characterization of site-specific degraders at contaminated sites can help determine if in situ bioremediation processes are sufficient. This study aimed to identify differences in benzene and toluene degradation rates and the microbial communities enriched under aerobic conditions when different concentrations of Cd and Pb are introduced. Microcosms were used to study the degradation of 0.23 mM benzene or 0.19 mM toluene under various concentrations of Pb (up to 240 µM) an

Understanding metabolic interactions between bacteria and fungi for cross-kingdom consortia applications.

Bacterial-fungal interactions represent fundamental ecological associations that shape microbial community structure across diverse environments. While traditionally framed through the lens of antagonism, bacteria and fungi engage in sophisticated metabolic dialogs extending far beyond simple warfare. Both primary and specialized metabolites function as context-dependent signals, nutrient resources, and modulators of cellular processes that fundamentally influence the physiology, development, and evolutionary trajectory of both fungi and bacteria. Primary metabolites mediate mutualistic relati

Microecological succession and quality enhancement of fermented tomato sour soup by synthetic functional microbiota.

Tomato sour soup, a traditional fermented food with health benefits, often exhibits inconsistent quality during natural fermentation. Three microbial consortia (yeasts, Eurotium, and their combination) were engineered to enhance fermentation. Physicochemical parameters, antioxidant activity, microbial communities, and metabolomic profiles were monitored throughout fermentation. Eurotium inoculation produced the strongest effects, including the highest total acid (21.10 g/kg), total phenolics (75.41 mg/g), and total flavonoids (29.41 mg/g), the lowest nitrite accumulation, and superior DPPH/ABT

Substrate-mediated spatial cooperation in Bacillus-Saccharomyces consortia enhance starch hydrolysis and flavor formation during solid-state fermentation.

Solid-state fermentation is extensively applied in the production of fermented foods, bio-based chemicals, and bioenergy products. However, rational regulation of fermentation performance remains difficult because microbial succession and metabolic labor division are strongly influenced by spatially heterogeneous substrates. The mechanisms through which spatially organized metabolic interactions coordinate substrate conversion and product biosynthesis remain insufficiently understood. Here, using Daqu fermentation as a representative model, temporal transcriptomic analyses revealed a distinct

Sustainable production through spatial niche partitioning in engineered light-driven microbial community.

Light-driven microbial communities consisting of phototrophs and heterotrophs represent an emerging frontier for biochemicals production from carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the construction of stable and robust light-driven artificial microbial communities remains challenging because the dominant strain wins the competition for nutrient and leads to the instability of subpopulations. Inspired by natural ecosystems, one promising approach to assemble stable consortia is to construct spatial niches partitioning subpopulations-that is, physically separating different microbial members into distin
