Dry eye is a prevalent ocular disorder characterized by tear film instability, inflammation, and ocular discomfort. Although the ocular surface (OS) microbiome contributes to immune regulation and pathogen defense, its role in dry eye pathophysiology remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize alterations in the OS microbiome of patients with dry eye undergoing cyclosporin A or NewHyalUni treatment and to identify their potential roles related to clinical improvement. Patients with dry eye were treated with either cyclosporin A and NewHyalUni drop combination or NewHyal

Fermented cabbage is a globally popular food, whose distinctive flavor is largely determined by microbial metabolism and interspecies interactions. To understand the roles of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in regulating microbial community structure and flavor formation during cabbage fermentation, natural fermented cabbage was compared with that inoculated with L. plantarum, R. mucilaginosa and both strains. The results showed that cabbage inoculated with either strain accelerated fermentation, with the fastest acidification obser

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most prevalent micronutrient disorders worldwide. Recent work suggests that dysbiosis may not simply be a consequence of low iron status but may actively contribute to impaired absorption. This narrative review synthesizes the evidence on gut microbiota patterns in IDA across age groups, examines the mechanistic links between dysbiosis and iron metabolism, and identifies the potential roles of microbiota-related dietary and therapeutic strategies.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This narrative review used a selective, theory-driv

The formation of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granules plays a crucial role in biomass retention. However, the microbial interaction, metabolic regulation, and risks associated with the dissemination of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) during granulation remain insufficiently understood. In this study, an anammox granulation reactor was established and analyzed through integrated physicochemical characterization and multi-omics approaches to investigate changes in sludge properties, microbial communities, metabolic gene expression, and ARG profiles throughout granulation process. The

Anthropogenic activities are impacting the environment in ways that may intersect and have compounding effects. In soil, the spread of antibiotics and resistant microbes, and thereby antimicrobial resistance (AMR), can accelerate because of climate change and anthropogenic activities. Here we propose that the dual production and release of antimicrobial compounds to the environment, and the increase in global temperatures as a consequence of climate change, will have synergistic effects leading to both enhanced climate change and disease risk. We predict that an increase in AMR will reduce mic

This study aims to explore the core microbiota of kombucha and to discover potential correlations between microbiota and volatile flavor compounds. The total acidity and microbial colony numbers changed dramatically in different fermentation periods of kombucha. Microbial analysis based on high throughput sequencing technology showed that the bacteria of Komagataeibacter, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia, Ralstonia, Halomonas, Sphingomonas and fungi of Dekkera, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Botryotrichum, Monascus, Pichia were the dominant genera. In addition, the correlation coefficients between the bac

Recent declines in bee populations coupled with advances in DNA-sequencing technology have sparked a renaissance in studies of bee-associated microbes. Megachile rotundata is an important field crop pollinator, but is stricken by chalkbrood, a disease caused by the fungus Ascosphaera aggregata. To test the hypothesis that some gut microbes directly or indirectly affect the growth of others, we applied four treatments to the pollen provisions of M. rotundata eggs and young larvae: antibacterials, antifungals, A. aggregata spores and a no-treatment control. We allowed the larvae to develop, and

In general antibiotics interact cooperatively with host defences, weakening and decreasing the virulence of microbial pathogens, thereby increasing vulnerability to phagocytosis and eradication by the intrinsic antimicrobial systems of the host. Antibiotics, however, also interact with host defences by several other mechanisms, some harmful, others beneficial. Harmful activities include exacerbation of potentially damaging inflammatory responses, a property of cell-wall targeted agents, which promotes the release of pro-inflammatory microbial cytotoxins and cell-wall components. On the other h

Despite extensive research, the complex relationship between cellular senescence, aging, and host-pathogen interactions remains incompletely understood. This paper aims to review cellular and molecular alterations of senescent cells and critically examine the role of bacterial infections as key drivers in immunosenescence. Molecular mechanisms underlying pathogen-induced stress responses and the subsequent impact on host tissues and immune function are also highlighted. The novelty of this work lies in integrating current knowledge into direct and indirect mechanisms by which bacterial pathoge

This study investigated the impact of microbial interactions on siderophore dynamics and phenotypic differentiation of Staphylococcus aureus under iron-deficient conditions. Optimization of media demonstrated that the glycerol alanine salts medium was best suited for analyzing the dynamics of siderophore production because of its stable production of diverse siderophore types. The effects of pH and iron concentration on siderophore yield revealed a maximum yield at neutral pH and low iron concentration (10 µg). Microbial interaction studies have highlighted variations in siderophore production

Protein fermentation by gut microbiota contributes significantly to the metabolite pool in the large intestine and may contribute to host amino acid balance. However, we have a limited understanding of the role that proteolytic metabolites have, both in the gut and in systemic circulation. A review of recent studies paired with findings from previous culture-based experiments suggests an important role for microbial protein fermentation in altering the gut microbiota and generating a diverse range of bioactive molecules which exert wide-ranging host effects. These metabolic products have been

As antibiotics continue to be phased out of livestock production, alternative feed amendments have received increased interest not only from a research standpoint but for commercial application. Most of the emphasis to date has focused on food safety aspects, particularly on lowering the incidence of foodborne pathogens in livestock. Several candidates are currently either being examined or are already being implemented in commercial settings. Among these candidates are chemical compounds such as formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has historically been used to inhibit Salmonella in feeds during feed p

Global contamination of streams by a large variety of compounds, such as nutrients and pesticides, may exert a high pressure on aquatic organisms, including microbial communities and their activity of organic matter decomposition. In this study, we assessed the potential interaction between nutrients and a fungicide and herbicide [tebuconazole (TBZ) and S-metolachlor (S-Met), respectively] at realistic environmental concentrations on the structure (biomass, diversity) and decomposition activity of fungal and bacterial communities (leaf decay rates, extracellular enzymatic activities) associate

Infection of Galleria mellonella larvae with the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema feltiae (A21 and R strains) and Steinernema glaseri (Dongrae) resulted in several species of bacteria, including the respective bacterial symbiont, Xenorhabdus spp., growing in the infected insect cadavers. These other bacteria were Enterococcus in all three nematode infections studied and Acinetobacter in the S. feltiae infections. The respective populations of these bacteria changed with time. Following infection of G. mellonella larvae with any one of the Steinernema sp., only Enterococcus bacteria were

Quorum sensing (QS) is a mechanism by which bacteria communicate and coordinate group behaviors through the secretion of signaling molecules, playing a critical role in oral microbial interactions and the pathogenesis of periodontitis. This review summarizes recent advances in QS-mediated regulation of oral microbial interaction networks in periodontitis, focusing on the molecular mechanisms that modulate biofilm formation, virulence factor expression, and pathogen community dynamics. In addition, novel QS-targeted therapeutic strategies are discussed. Although periodontitis is fundamentally a

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and is associated with both altered gut microbiome composition and host genetic risk. Both host genetic variants and the gut microbiome can affect host gene expression in the colon; however, it remains unclear whether interactions between the two (genotype × microbiome, GxM) shape intestinal gene regulation in humans and their contribution to IBD risk.
METHODS: We analyzed publicly available data for 86 individuals (64 patients with IBD and 22 controls) in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Multi'omic

The intracellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), composed of oxygen-reduced molecules, is important not only because of their lethal effects on microorganisms but also due to their potential inflammatory and metabolic regulation properties. The ROS pro-inflammatory properties are associated with the second signal to inflammasome activation, leading to cleaving pro-IL-1β and pro-IL18 before their secretion, as well as gasdermin-D, leading to pyroptosis. Some microorganisms can modulate NLRP3 and AIM-2 inflammasomes through ROS production: whilst Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium

Citrus fruits are the most produced fruits in the world, but they are threatened by several pathogens, including the fungus Phyllosticta citricarpa, the causal agent of citrus black spot (CBS). The fungus affects most citrus species and the infection results in economic losses in citrus-producing areas. This disease causes the aesthetic depreciation of fresh fruit, impairing its commercialization. As an alternative to the use of synthetic fungicides to control the pathogen, the biological control, using bacteria of the genus Bacillus, is highlighted. Such microorganisms enable biocontrol by th

Vascular dementia is the second leading cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease in the elderly population worldwide. Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are frequently observed in MRI of elderly subjects and considered as a possible surrogate marker. The number and location of CMBs reflect the severity of diseases and the underlying pathologies may involve cerebral amyloid angiopathy or hypertensive vasculopathy. Accumulating evidence demonstrated the clinicopathological discrepancies of CMBs, the clinical significance of CMBs associated with other MRI markers of cerebral small vessel disease, cog

Tropical peatlands are hotspots of methane (CH4) production but present high variation and emission uncertainties in the Amazon region. This is because the controlling factors of methane production in tropical peats are not yet well documented. Although inhibitory effects of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) on methanogenic activity are known from pure culture studies, the role of NO x in the methane cycling of peatlands remains unexplored. Here, we investigated the CH4 content, soil geochemistry and microbial communities along 1-m-soil profiles and assessed the effects of soil NO x and nitrous oxide (N
