Scoping review about bacteremia due to Kocuria rosea with embolic manifestations in an immunocompetent patient: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Bacteremia is a condition with high mortality; it is important to identify the causative microorganism to provide targeted treatment. Approximately 1% of bacteremia cases are due to unusual germs such as Kocuria rosea, which is a gram-positive coccus bacterium and is part of the human skin, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal flora. It can act as an opportunistic pathogen, generally in immunocompromised patients, and is usually associated with device-related infections. We believe that the clinical impact of this unusual presentation of this microorganism, which is increasingly encounte

A case of Kocuria rhizophila infection and persistence in ascitic fluid of a peritoneal dialysis patient with polycystic kidney disease.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a well-established renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease, but peritonitis continues to represent a significant clinical challenge. While most cases are attributed to gram-positive bacteria from the skin microbiota, emerging reports have documented infections with atypical organisms, including Kocuria species. Here we present the case of a 68-year-old woman with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease on peritoneal dialysis who developed recurrent peritonitis episodes due to Kocuria rhizophila, a microorganism traditionally consider

[The bacterial flora of preputial space].

The bacterial flora of the preputial space of 210 healthy males (43 children aged between 2 and 11 years, 137 males between 12 and 60 years and 30 men over 60 years) was determined by smears and cultueres from glans penis, sulcus coronarius and the adjacent prepuce. The results were grouped according to various criteria, e.g. glans covered or uncovered and age of males. Differences in the distribution of germs could be found in relationship to age. In the case of an uncovered glans penis the presence of microbial flora corresponds to the grampositive saprophytic bacteria in areas rich in sebac

Graphene oxide remodels the rhizosphere microbiome and induces metabolic reprogramming of flavor-related compounds in tea leaves.

The flavor quality of Camellia sinensis is strongly influenced by their secondary metabolites and associated microbial communities. Graphene oxide (GO) is a carbon-based nanomaterial with unique physicochemical properties. While its potential to modulate plant physiology has been recognized, its specific effects on tea plant metabolism and associated rhizosphere microbiomes remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, a pot experiment was established to evaluate the impact of varying GO concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100 mg/L) on both the foliar metabolic profiles of tea plants and the structur

The toxic mechanism of 6:2 Cl-PFESA in adolescent male rats: Endocrine disorders and liver inflammation regulated by the gut microbiota-gut-testis/liver axis.

In previous studies, 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA), a perfluorooctanesulfonate alternative, has been demonstrated to be toxic to mammals. However, the toxic mechanism of 6:2 Cl-PFESA in mammals is unknown. Herein, adolescent male rats were administered 50 μg/kg/Day 6:2 Cl-PFESA for 28 days (oral gavage) to estimate the toxicity of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and investigate its toxic mechanism. Significant changes in some hematological indicators (e.g., aspartate transaminase and neutrophils) and liver sections (inflammatory cell infiltration) indicated that 6:2 Cl-PFESA

Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 RNA virus shedding and lymphopenia are hallmarks of COVID-19 in cancer patients with poor prognosis.

Patients with cancer are at higher risk of severe coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19), but the mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions during cancer therapies remain elusive. When comparing nasopharyngeal swabs from cancer and noncancer patients for RT-qPCR cycle thresholds measuring acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in 1063 patients (58% with cancer), we found that malignant disease favors the magnitude and duration of viral RNA shedding concomitant with prolonged serum elevations of type 1 IFN that anticorrelated with anti-RBD IgG antibodies. Dietary Supplementation of ε-Polylysine Beneficially Affects Ileal Microbiota Structure and Function in Ningxiang Pigs.

Intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the health of animals. However, little is known about the gut microbiota in Ningxiang pigs. Thus, we investigated how dietary supplementation with different ε-polylysine concentrations (0, 20, 40, 80, and 160 ppm) affected the ileal microbiota in Ningxiang pigs using a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square method. Each experimental period included 10 days for diet adaptation, 3 days for feces collection and 2 days for digesta collection. The ileal contents were collected and used for sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene. The

Effects of Proton Pump Inhibitors on the Gastrointestinal Microbiota in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used to lessen symptoms in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, the effects of PPI therapy on the gastrointestinal microbiota in GERD patients remain unclear. We examined the association between the PPI usage and the microbiota present in gastric mucosal and fecal samples from GERD patients and healthy controls (HCs) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. GERD patients taking PPIs were further divided into short-term and long-term PPI user groups. We showed that PPI administration lowered the relative bacterial diversity of the gast

Valorisation of hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater in agriculture: effects on tobacco plants and rhizosphere microbiota.

Industrial wastewater obtained from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL-WW) of food wastes for biofuels production could represent a source of crop nutrients since it is characterized by a high amount of organic and inorganic compounds. In the present work, the potential use of HTL-WW as irrigation water for industrial crops was investigated. The composition of the HTL-WW was rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium with high level of organic carbon. A pot experiment with Nicotiana tabacum L. plants was conducted using diluted wastewater to reduce the concentration of some chemical elements belo

Rothia mucilaginosa bacteremia in end-stage renal disease and solid organ transplant: the need for raised awareness.

Rothia mucilaginosa, previously known as Stomatococcus mucilaginosus, is a Gram-positive coccus that is a part of the oropharyngeal and upper respiratory tract microbiota. Although this organism is believed to be of low virulence, it is increasingly being recognized as an opportunistic pathogen mostly affecting immunocompromised hosts. In this article, we describe a case of Rothia mucilaginosa bacteremia in an immunocompromised heart transplant recipient with end-stage renal disease, who was getting maintenance hemodialysis via a tunneled catheter. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of Rot
