Stimulation effects of ciprofloxacin and sulphamethoxazole in Microcystis aeruginosa and isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation-based screening of antibiotic targets.

Antibiotics are normally regarded as safe to aquatic ecosystems when their contamination concentrations are lower than the toxic threshold. This study observed the hazard of ciprofloxacin, sulphamethoxazole and their binary mixture to the aquatic environment at environmentally relevant concentrations lower than the toxic threshold, due to the stimulation on the bloom of Microcystis aeruginosa. The enhanced growth of M. aeruginosa, coupled with elevated photosynthesis activity, was exerted by 50-200 ng/L of ciprofloxacin, 100-200 ng/L of sulphamethoxazole and 20-100 ng/L of the binary antibioti

Efficient elimination of Microcystis aeruginosa by catalytic ozonation with CuCe-LDO/modified porous carbon composites: Performance, mechanisms and ecotoxicological consequences.

To address harmful algal blooms (HABs) and mitigate their threats to ecological security and human health, developing advanced treatment technologies is imperative. In this study, a novel metal-carbon composite (CuCe/NCS), which couples CuCe-layered double oxides with modified porous carbons, was synthesized and applied for the catalytic ozonation of Microcystis aeruginosa. The synthesized CuCe/NCS featured a well-developed porous structure and abundant active sites, thereby enabling excellent catalytic performance. The CuCe/NCS-catalyzed ozonation process achieved nearly 100% algae removal wi

Co-application of pan-genomics and machine learning uncovers novel insights into the maintenance and evolution of microcystins production trait in Microcystis.

Microcystins (MCs), the potent hepatotoxins produced by toxic strains of Microcystis and other cyanobacteria, pose a major threat to freshwater ecosystems worldwide. However, the regulatory mechanisms, evolutionary origin, and maintenance of this energy-intensive toxigenicity remain largely unresolved. Based on 132 non-redundant Microcystis strains, this study combined pan-genomics analysis, phylogenetic reconstruction, pan-genome-wide association analysis and machine learning approaches to investigate the regulatory and evolutionary basis of MCs production. Results suggest that MCs production

Predictive monitoring, identification, and control of Microcystis blooms in a drinking water source basin: An integrative artificial intelligence and bioinformatics approach.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose serious challenges for drinking water utilities; however, conventional monitoring in drinking water source basins remains largely reactive. To address this, we present an integrative framework that combines artificial intelligence (AI) forecasting with strain-resolved bioinformatic diagnostics to enable proactive monitoring of bloom-causing HAB in drinking water source. The AI model employed environmental input features and was optimized, which achieved high predictive accuracy (up to 0.9 R2) with early warning capabilities (1 week lead time). Explainable AI pi

Effects of phosphorus sources on volatile organic compound emissions from Microcystis flos-aquae and their toxic effects on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

There is diverse phosphorus (P) in eutrophicated waters, but it is considered as a crucial nutrient for cyanobacteria growth due to its easy precipitation as insoluble salts. To uncover the effects of complex P nutrients on the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cyanobacteria and their toxic effects on other algae, the VOCs from Microcystis flos-aquae supplied with different types and amount of P nutrients were analyzed, and the effects of VOCs and their two main compounds on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii growth were investigated. When M. flos-aquae cells were supplied with K2HPO4,

Identification of Microcystis aeruginosa Peptides Responsible for Allergic Sensitization and Characterization of Functional Interactions between Cyanobacterial Toxins and Immunogenic Peptides.

BACKGROUND: The cyanobacterium species Microcystis aeruginosa produces microcystin and an array of diverse metabolites believed responsible for their toxicity and/or immunogenicity. Previously, chronic rhinitis patients were demonstrated to elicit a specific IgE response to nontoxic strains of M. aeruginosa by skin-prick testing, indicating that cyanobacteria allergenicity resides in a non-toxin-producing component of the organism. OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify and characterize M. aeruginosa peptide(s) responsible for allergic sensitization in susceptible individuals, and we investigated

Multifactor meta-analysis reveals context-dependent inhibitory efficiency and mechanisms of allelochemicals against Microcystis aeruginosa and concurrent microcystin-pollution risk.

Microcystis aeruginosa as prevalent bloom-forming cyanobacterium deteriorates water quality and excretes microcystins (MCs) to pose notable eco-risk. Allelochemicals are promising algicides, yet inconsistent research settings (allelochemical concentration, type, action time, action mode) lead to debates on their impacts on M. aeruginosa growth and MC-pollution. By integrating 2124 data points from 121 articles, this study proposed multifactor meta-analysis approach integrating univariate subgroup with multifactor interaction analyses, which fundamentally differs from conventional approaches an

Data describing effects of different phosphorus concentrations on growth and chymotrypsin inhibitors in Microcystis aeruginosa NIVA Cya 43 using LC-MS.

Cyanobacteria's abundant production of bioactive compounds concerns unselective filter feeders in the aquatic food chain, but the factors driving this production remain poorly understood. Notably, nutrient availability, particularly concerning phosphorus and nitrogen, is believed to be a pivotal determinant of cyanobacterial mass development. In this data investigation, we aimed to explore the influence of dissolved phosphorus (PO43-) on the presence of chymotrypsin inhibitors, specifically Cyanopeptolin 954 (CP954) and Nostopeptin 920 (BN920), within Microcystis aeruginosa NIVA Cya 43. Enhancing arsenate metabolism in Microcystis aeruginosa and relieving risks of arsenite and microcystins by nano-Fe2O3 under dissolved organic phosphorus conditions.

Little information is available on how nano-Fe2O3 substituted iron ions as a possible iron source impacting on algal growth and arsenate (As(V)) metabolism under dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) (D-glucose-6-phosphate (GP)) conditions. We investigated the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa and As(V) metabolism together with their metabolites in As(V) aquatic environments with nano-Fe2O3 and GP as the sole iron and P sources, respectively. Results showed that nano-Fe2O3 showed inhibitory effects on M. aeruginosa growth and microcystin (MCs) release under GP conditions in As(V) polluted water. T

Effect of ultraviolet radiation (type B) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the interspecific interaction between Microcystis flos-aquae and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.

Anthropogenic activities have led to the depletion of the ultraviolet radiation screening ozone layer, exposing aquatic biota to its harmful effects. Also, the rising applications of nanotechnology are resulting in the release and contamination of aquatic ecosystems with engineered nanometals like titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2). The rise in ultraviolet radiation interacts with nanometals, increasing their bioactivities to susceptible aquatic organisms such as algae and cyanobacteria. The effect of ultraviolet radiation B (UVB) and nTiO2 on Microcystis flos-aquae and Pseudokirchneriella

Light-driven differences in bacterial networks and organic matter decomposition: Insights from an analysis of the harmful cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806.

Freshwater systems are critical yet often underestimated components of global carbon cycling, functioning both as carbon sinks and sources. Cyanobacteria play a key role in this cycle by capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. The captured carbon is either released back into the atmosphere or sequestered in sediments following organismal decay. This study examines the pivotal role of cyanobacteria, specifically Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806, in the biogeochemical cycling of carbon in freshwater ecosystems, with a focus on how light influences the degradation of cyanobact

Cylindrospermopsin induced changes in growth, toxin production and antioxidant response of Acutodesmus acuminatus and Microcystis aeruginosa under differing light and nitrogen conditions.

Growing evidence suggests that some bioactive metabolites (e.g. cyanotoxins) produced by cyanobacteria have allelopathic potential, due to their inhibitory or stimulatory effects on competing species. Although a number of studies have shown that the cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN) has variable effects on phytoplankton species, the impact of changing physicochemical conditions on its allelopathic potential is yet to be investigated. We investigated the physiological response of Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanobacteria) and Acutodesmus acuminatus (Chlorophyta) to CYN under varying nitrogen and

A Sampling Method Considering Body Size for Detecting the Associated Microbes in Plankton Populations: A Case Study, Using the Bloom-Forming Cyanobacteria, Microcystis.

Accurately quantifying associated microbes is essential to understand the interactions between microplankton and their associated microbes. Most DNA-based methods, such as high-throughput sequencing, primarily assess the ratio of target objects to references in microplankton samples. However, simple random sampling (SRS) of individuals may lead to deviations in quantifying these ratios at the population level if these characteristics are associated with the reference content of individuals. This study considered group analysis, which involves detecting k groups with n individuals in each group

Expression of Microcystis Biosynthetic Gene Clusters in Natural Populations Suggests Temporally Dynamic Synthesis of Novel and Known Secondary Metabolites in Western Lake Erie.

Microcystis spp. produce diverse secondary metabolites within freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) around the world. In addition to the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) encoding known compounds, Microcystis genomes harbor numerous BGCs of unknown function, indicating a poorly understood chemical repertoire. While recent studies show that Microcystis produces several metabolites in the lab and field, little work has focused on analyzing the abundance and expression of its broader suite of BGCs during cyanoHAB events. Here, we use metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approac
