Macro- and micronutrients in African-Americans with heart failure.

An emerging body of evidence suggests secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) may be an important covariant of congestive heart failure (CHF), especially in African-Americans (AA) where hypovitaminosis D is prevalent given that melanin, a natural sunscreen, mandates prolonged exposure of skin to sunlight and where a housebound lifestyle imposed by symptomatic CHF limits outdoor activities and hence sunlight exposure. In addition to the role of hypovitaminosis D in contributing to SHPT is the increased urinary and fecal losses of macronutrients Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) associated with the aldosteronism o

Professional sport activity and micronutrients: effects on bone mass.

Osteoporosis is the most prevalent metabolic bone disease among developed countries. Although bone mass and density are certainly determined by various concurrent factors such as genetics, hormones, life-style and the environment, and although the genetic program has a critical role in growth and in bone peak development, for their realization an adequate nutritional intake of nutrients and regular exercise are always necessary and may represent a way to prevent osteoporosis and fractures. Exercise and especially high-impact sport activity during growth and adolescence increases bone mineral d

Micronutrients and the premenstrual syndrome: the case for calcium.

Premenstrual syndrome afflicts millions of premenopausal women and has been described as one of the most common disorders in women. Research over the past few years suggests that a variety of nutrients may have an important role in the phase related mood and behavioral disturbances of the premenstrual syndrome. There is scientific evidence, at least for a few of these micronutrients, specifically calcium and vitamin D, supporting cyclic fluctuations during the menstrual cycle that may help explain some features of PMS. Ovarian hormones influence calcium, magnesium and vitamin D metabolism. Est

Serum micronutrients in relation to pre-cancerous gastric lesions.

Serum levels of retinol, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, selenium, ferritin, copper, and zinc were assayed for approximately 600 adults aged 35 to 64 with pre-cancerous gastric lesions in an area of China with one of the world's highest rates of stomach cancer. Previous studies have shown that the cancers generally are preceded by chronic atropic gastritis (CAG), intestinal metaplasia (IM) and dysplasia. Concentrations of beta-carotene and ascorbic acid were significantly lower among individuals with IM than among those whose most severe lesion was superficial gastritis or CAG.

Micronutrient deficiencies in critical illness.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Low micronutrient levels in critical illness have been reported in multiple studies. Because of the antioxidant properties of various micronutrients, micronutrient deficiency may augment oxidative stress in critical illness. However, it remains unclear whether micronutrient concentrations in ICU patients are different from those in healthy age-matched controls. It is also unclear whether micronutrient deficiency develops, worsens, or resolves during ICU admission without supplementation. METHODS: We prospectively studied a cohort of adult critically ill patients. Micronutri

Micronutrient status of Indian population.

Micronutrients play an important role in the proper growth and development of the human body and its deficiency affects the health contributing to low productivity and vicious cycle of malnutrition, underdevelopment as well as poverty. Micronutrient deficiency is a public health problem affecting more than one-fourth of the global population. Several programmes have been launched over the years in India to improve nutrition and health status of the population; however, a large portion of the population is still affected by micronutrient deficiency. Anaemia, the most common form of micronutrien

[Micronutrient consumption and overweight: is there a relationship?].

INTRODUCTION: In past decades, the growth in obesity has been associated with changes in the lifestyle of the population, including comprehensive dietary changes, especially in the intake of micronutrients. OBJECTIVE: To describe micronutrient intake and review its consequences on nutritional status. METHODS: A literature review was performed covering domestic and international articles published over the past 11 years, on the SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and governmental databases, using descriptors such as "micronutrients", "food consumption", "excess weight", "health", "nutritional status" in

Micronutrient deficiencies and cognitive functioning.

The relationship between four micronutrient deficiencies (iodine, iron, zinc and vitamin B-12) and children's cognitive functioning is reviewed. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy has negative and irreversible effects on the developing fetus. Although there is some evidence that postnatal iodine deficiency is associated with cognitive deficits, the findings are controversial. Iron deficiency is widespread and has been associated to cognitive deficits, but the results of prevention trials are inconsistent. Zinc deficiency has been linked with low activity and depressed motor development among t

Prevalence of micronutrient malnutrition worldwide.

Recent estimates indicate that globally over two billion people are at risk for vitamin A, iodine, and/or iron deficiency, in spite of recent efforts in the prevention and control of these deficiencies. The prevalence is especially high in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and pregnant women and young children are at greatest risk. Other micronutrient deficiencies of public health concern include zinc, folate, and the B vitamins. However, there is limited data on the actual prevalence of these deficiencies. Finally, in many settings, more than one micronutrient deficiency exists, suggesti

Immunobiology of mild micronutrient deficiencies.

Nutrition is a critical determinant of the outcome of host microbe interactions through a modulation of the immune response. Besides macronutrient malnutrition, deficiencies of several macronutrients also influence immune homeostasis and thus affect infection-related morbidity and mortality. Deficiencies of micronutrients like vitamin A, iron and zinc are widely prevalent among populations living in developing countries. Besides their severe deficiencies, subclinical deficiencies are known to impair biological functions in the host, immune function being one of them. The effects of these micro

Control and prevention of micronutrient malnutrition.

The importance of micronutrient deficiencies to child survival and to the health and development of nations is universally recognized. Over two billion people, or more than one in three individuals, are at risk of iron, vitamin A and iodine deficiencies. More than 13 million people suffer night blindness or total blindness due to vitamin A deficiency; severe iron deficiency accounts for one in five maternal deaths and one-third of all young children are anaemic; iodine deficiency affects 50 million children and is the greatest single preventable cause of intellectual impairment, as well as a m

Dietary Micronutrient Intake and Micronutrient Status in Patients With Chronic Stable Heart Failure: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies suggest that patients with heart failure have a tendency to a reduced status of a number of micronutrients and that this may be associated with an adverse prognosis. A small number of studies also suggest that patients with heart failure may have reduced dietary intake of micronutrients, a possible mechanism for reduced status. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess dietary micronutrient intake and micronutrient status in a group of patients with heart failure. METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed in 79 outpatients with chronic stable heart failure

Bidirectional causality between micronutrients and mental illness: Mendelian randomization studies.

BACKGROUND: Previous observational clinical research has suggested a link between micronutrients and psychiatric conditions. However, the causal relationship between these nutrients and mental health disorders remains uncertain. This study endeavors to fill this knowledge gap by employing a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis on pooled data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS), aiming to explore the potential causal associations between 20 prevalent micronutrients and 7 common psychiatric disorders. METHODS: A collection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with 20 mi

Modulation of Human Hydrogen Sulfide Metabolism by Micronutrients, Preliminary Data.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a pivotal gasotransmitter networking with nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) to regulate basic homeostatic functions. It is released by the alternative pathways of transulfuration by the enzymes Cystathionine Beta Synthase (CBS) and Cystathionine Gamma Lyase (CSE), and by Cysteine AminoTransferase (CAT)/ 3-Mercaptopyruvate Sulfur Transferase (3MPST). A non-enzymatic, intravascular release is also in place. We retrospectively investigated the possibility to modulate the endogenous H2S release and signaling in humans by a dietary manipulation with su

Association between irritable bowel syndrome and micronutrients: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent disorder of gut brain interaction with a multifactorial etiology. Food trigger avoidance is common among individuals with IBS and exclusion diets are gaining popularity. However, recent guidelines on IBS management cautioned regarding the use of unsupervised dietary therapy with concerns of development of poor eating habits and even nutritional deficiencies. We aimed to review the available literature on the effect of habitual and exclusion diets on micronutrient status as well as the role of micronutrient supplementation

Cereal phytases and their importance in improvement of micronutrients bioavailability.

Phytic acid is a main reservoir of phosphorous (P) in plants and contributes to about 80% of the total P in cereal seeds. However, it is well known to possess anti-nutritional behavior. Because it has strong affinity to chelate divalent ions e.g. calcium, magnesium, and especially with iron and zinc. Therefore, it is extremely poor as a dietary source of P. To enhance bio-availability of micronutrients, an enzyme namely phytase is known to hydrolyze phytic acid. Unfortunately, phytase is not produced in the stomach of monogastric animals and humans. Thus, the presence of phytic acid in cereal

The anti-borreliae efficacy of phytochemicals and micronutrients: an update.

Naturally occurring substances have been used for centuries to fight against various pathogens. They serve as a source for new chemical entities or provide options to already existing therapeutics. While there is an increasing interest in studying antimicrobial properties of naturally derived agents, little is known about their effects against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative pathogens of Lyme disease. A better understanding of this aspect could advance knowledge about pathophysiology of these bacteria and help improve the efficacy of current approaches against Lyme disease. Here
