[Differential diagnosis of ascites and abscess forming hepatitis in AIDS patients with reference to the first patient with microsporidia infection in Austria].

We report on a 30 years-old female AIDS patient suffering from generalized pneumocystosis and intestinal microsporidiosis. The chest X-ray showed a right-sided pleural effusion; the lungs showed no areas of consolidation and the heart and the vessels were normal in size. Sonography revealed multiple cystic lesions of the liver measuring 1-3 cm in diameter, as well as ascites. Pneumocystis carinii was detected on cytological examination of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, the pleural effusion and the ascitic fluid. Intestinal microsporidiosis was diagnosed by cytological examination of the sto

Telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of Microsporidia sp. MB, a microsporidian symbiont of Anopheles coluzzii isolated from Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Microsporidia sp. MB is an intracellular parasite of anopheline mosquitoes identified across the African continent. Microsporidia sp. MB infections appear to have no significant effect on mosquito fitness and can vertically transmit, whilst infected individuals have exhibited significantly reduced levels of Plasmodium falciparum transmission. These combined characteristics make Microsporidia sp. MB a promising candidate for use in malaria control. A comprehensive genome would greatly facilitate investigation into the evolution and biological pathways underlying important phenotypes

Molecular diversity of Enterocytozoon bieneusi (microsporidia) among children, adolescents, and young women in poor-resource settings in southern Madagascar.

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular eukaryotic parasites, phylogenetically related to fungi, and are recognised causes of significant morbidity in humans. They are opportunistic pathogens of particular concern in HIV-infected and other immunocompromised populations. In this study, the occurrence and genetic diversity of microsporidian infections (Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon spp.) were investigated in socially vulnerable populations from disadvantaged areas in southern Madagascar. Epidemiological questionnaires were used to collect demographic data and potential risk factor

North American Propolis Extracts From Upstate New York Decrease Nosema ceranae (Microsporidia) Spore Levels in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera).

Nosema ceranae infections in honey bees (Apis mellifera) pose a severe threat to colony health. Beekeepers have used dicyclohexylammonium fumagillin to control Nosema apis, although it may be ineffective against N. ceranae. We investigated the ability of various propolis extracts collected from Upstate New York (United States) to decrease in vivo N. ceranae infection levels when fed ad libitum to N. ceranae-infected honey bees. Propolis extracts, most notably a dichloromethane extract, significantly lowered spore levels in a dose-dependent fashion 4 days post inoculation. When testing the in v

Multiyear Survey of Coccidia, Cryptosporidia, Microsporidia, Histomona, and Hematozoa in Wild Quail in the Rolling Plains Ecoregion of Texas and Oklahoma, USA.

We developed nested PCR protocols and performed a multiyear survey on the prevalence of several protozoan parasites in wild northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) in the Rolling Plains ecoregion of Texas and Oklahoma (i.e. fecal pellets, bird intestines and blood smears collected between 2010 and 2013). Coccidia, cryptosporidia, and microsporidia were detected in 46.2%, 11.7%, and 44.0% of the samples (n = 687), whereas histomona and hematozoa were undetected. Coccidia consisted of one major and two minor Eimeria species. Cryptosporidia were represented

Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Microsporidia and Cryptosporidium spp. in patients with multiple bowel biopsies from Fars Province, Iran.

Microsporidia and Cryptosporidium species are prominent agents of enteritis, capable of causing severe chronic diarrhoea in children, immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals around the world. It is not possible to identify the parasites at species level solely on the basis of microscopy. The aim of the present study was to identify and characterize the species of Microsporidia and Cryptosporidium in immunocompetent humans with GI disturbances by nested PCR-RFLP, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Fresh frozen and fresh paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of the duodenum, jejunum,

Identification of a transparent mutant tiger barb Puntius tetrazona and its use for in vivo observation of a Pleistophora sp. (Microsporidia) infection.

A transparent mutant tiger barb Puntius tetrazona was identified and characterized by its transparent body, which allows clear visualization of internal organs. Hybridization of this mutant with the albino variant produces a transparent and albinoid double phenotype, and the transparency of this mutant is controlled by a recessive allele. Light microscopic and ultrastructural examinations show that in contrast to normal individuals, transparent mutants lack iridophores, and light penetrates unimpeded through the body. Pleistophora sp. infection was observed in vivo, allowing live observation o

[A new trichromic safranin stain for the detection of Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis, species of Microsporidia and Isospora belli in fecal material].

Cryptosporidium parvum, Isospora belli, Cyclospora cayetanensis and Microsporidia are frequent pathogens in the immunodeficient host, which may cause multiple infections. The above mentioned parasites are found in feces by the application of different specific tintorial techniques. The objective of this work was the development of a stain for the simultaneous detection of these parasites, reducing costs as well as the time taken to make the diagnosis. The safranin-trichrome stain is simple, chip and its results are similar to those of specific tints. All microorganisms are easy to detect and b

Behaviour of the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis infected with the endosymbiont Microsporidia MB: host seeking and cuticular hydrocarbons associated with mating.

The Plasmodium transmission blocking symbiont Microsporidia MB has shown potential for the control of malaria. However, there is limited information about the symbiont's physiological and behavioural impact on the mosquito vector, which is important for determining the potential impact of a Microsporidia MB-based malaria intervention. We asked whether Microsporidia MB infection i) alters the attraction of Anopheles arabiensis to human odours; ii) is associated with variation in the types of blood-meal sources utilised, and iii) changes the cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles of male mosquitoe

Patagonian king crabs (Lithodes santolla and Paralomis granulosa) and their diseases: Pathogen survey and taxonomic clarification of Areospora rohanae (Microsporidia).

Lithodid crabs constitute a valuable natural resource with commercial interest; however, their health status in South America is scarcely studied. The presence of pathogens may have a negative impact on affected populations, endangering the fishery. This study surveys the symbionts present in populations of the king crab, Lithodes santolla, and the stone/false king crab, Paralomis granulosa, using histology, transmission electronic microscopy, and molecular analyses to characterise various symbionts. The histological and molecular data revealed a wide range of infections in L. santolla, includ

Identification of opportunistic enteric parasites among immunocompetent patients with diarrhoea from Northern India and genetic characterisation of Cryptosporidium and Microsporidia.

PURPOSE: Enteric parasitic infestation is a major public health problem in developing countries. Parasites such as Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora spp., Cystoisospora spp. and Microsporidia may cause severe diarrhoea among immunocompromised patients. There is scanty data on their frequency among immunocompetent patients. Accordingly, we studied the frequency of enteric opportunistic parasites among immunocompetent patients with diarrhoea from northern India; we also performed genetic characterisation of Cryptosporidia and Microsporidia among them. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Stool samples from 80

Ultrastructure and development of Nosema podocotyloidis n. sp. (Microsporidia), a hyperparasite of Podocotyloides magnatestis (Trematoda), a parasite of Parapristipoma octolineatum (Teleostei).

Nosema podocotyloidis n. sp. (Microsporidia, Nosematidae) is described from Podocotyloides magnatestis (Trematoda: Opecoelidae), a parasite of the fish Parapristipoma octolineatum (Teleostei) in the Atlantic Ocean. Electron microscopy reveals that all the stages of the cycle (merogony and sporogony) are diplokaryotic and in direct contact with the cytoplasm of host cells. There is no sporophorous vesicle (pansporoblast). The earliest stages observed are meronts, which have a simple plasmic membrane. Their cytoplasm is granular, rich in ribosomes and contains some sacculi of endoplasmic reticul

A new lineage of crayfish-infecting Microsporidia: The Cambaraspora floridanus n. gen. n. sp. (Glugeida: Glugeidae) complex from Floridian freshwaters (USA).

Crayfish are a vital ecological asset in their native range but can be highly damaging as invasive species. Knowledge of their diseases, including high levels of research on Aphanomyces astaci (crayfish plague), show that disease plays a vital role during crayfish invasions. Microsporidian diseases in crayfish are less studied but are thought to have important links to crayfish health and invasion dynamics. In this study we provide a systematic description of a novel microsporidian parasite from the Floridian crayfish, Procambarus paeninsulanus, with additional genetic identification from rela

Laboratory An. gambiae s.l. mosquito colonies show sustained high transmission of Microsporidia sp. MB and a small decrease in egg viability.

INTRODUCTION: Microsporidia sp. MB, a microsporidian symbiont found naturally in Anopheles mosquitoes, has potential as a novel malaria control tool since it can inhibit Plasmodium development and transmission. The most feasible MB-based Plasmodium control strategy would involve dissemination through live mosquito releases, or release of spores infective to mosquito larvae. To implement either strategy, establishment of stable mosquito colonies carrying MB at a high frequency is likely to be essential. METHODS: The progeny of field caught An. gambiae s.l from Burkina Faso were isolated for in
