A dimensionally accurate impression is one of the primary determinants for the precise fabrication of complete denture prostheses in microstomia patients. This can be achieved with the help of sectional trays. This technical report describes the fabrication of a sectional impression tray with a reusable sectional handle using magnets. The handles can be sterilized and reused, thus saving clinical time for future use. The proposed method provides ease of reassembling and disassembling, easy placement, and guided orientation of the two tray segments.

Systemic sclerosis is a complex autoimmune connective tissue disease of unknown cause that causes sclerosis and inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Sclerosis involving the face can lead to microstomia, leading to difficulties with mastication, phonation, and oral hygiene. Although many agents have been used to treat internal organ involvement, they often have compromised efficacy on cutaneous manifestation including facial dermal sclerosis. In this case presentation, we will introduce a surgical technique to correct scleroderma-induced microstomia.

In most cases, prosthetic rehabilitation of patients suffering from microstomia is inconvenient for the patient and challenging for both the dentist and dental technician. In such cases, conventional impression-taking requires an individualized tray design and modified impression techniques, amplifying the risk for impression and cast deformation and thereby compromising the final outcome. An intraoral scanner (IOS) might overcome these limitations due to its reduced size compared to an impression tray. In the present case history report, a microstomia patient was successfully restored with a

OBJECTIVES: Limited-cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc), formerly known as CREST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, scleroderma, and telangiectasias) is an auto-immune connective tissue disease characterized by cutaneous fibrosis and systemic fibrovascular dysfunction. The cutaneous fibrosis of lcSSc is commonly limited to acral sites, with perioral involvement seen in 70%-85% of cases. Patients often seek treatment of lcSSc-associated microstomia for functional and cosmetic purposes. Treatments for the cutaneous sclerosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc) include top

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disorder characterised by skin fibrosis leading to skin tightening and disfigurement. However, there is no definite treatment for SSc and its skin complications. Fractional carbon dioxide laser has been widely used for different cutaneous pathologies. This study aims to evaluate the benefits of CO2 laser resurfacing on microstomia and peri-oral rhytids in systemic sclerosis patients.
METHOD AND PATIENTS: 33 systemic sclerosis patients were enrolled. Four sessions of CO2 laser treatment were performed at an interval of four weeks. Patients

Microstomia presents a challenge for the patient and dental provider. This report describes a partial digital workflow for the fabrication of a mandibular complete denture for a patient with microstomia. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology was utilized to 3D print a sectional custom tray with a unique design. The sectional custom tray was used to make a conventional border molded impression of the edentulous arch to fabricate a flexible complete mandibular denture for a 58-year-old female patient with scleroderma and microstomia. This treatment resulted in a succe

INTRODUCTION: The effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) on collagen structures are well known in the treatment of photodamaged skin.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of IPL on sclerotic skin by treating patients with microstomia due to systemic sclerosis.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: 13 patients all with microstomia and systemic sclerosis were treated with IPL, PR (530-750 nm filter) and/or VL (555-950 nm filter) applicator. They were treated in the perioral area 8 times with 3-4 weeks of interval and follow-up for 6 months. The outcomes were the inter-incisal d

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare but severe adverse dermatitis that is an autoimmune reaction to drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. TEN most severely affects the mucous membranes including the mouth and could develop into microstomia; however, microstomia in relation to TEN has rarely been reported in the literature. We describe an adult female patient who developed microstomia due to scar contracture of the bilateral oral commissures subsequent to TEN and was successfully treated by a simple surgical technique consisting solely of transverse incision of the commissu

Patients who have sustained a facial burn often contend with cosmetic and functional challenges, including microstomia. Many devices have been created by a variety of professionals to provide oral stretching. These devices can be classified as intraoral or extraoral and deliver a stretch either horizontally, vertically, or circumorally. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review of oral-stretching devices.

INTRODUCTION: Freeman-Burian syndrome (FBS) is a congenital myopathic craniofacial condition that often includes features outside the craniofacial region. Among the craniofacial manifestations of FBS, the severely reduced oral aperture stands out as one of the most functionally limiting features of the condition. This marked constriction compromises nutritional intake, speech clarity, oral health maintenance, and airway access. Additionally, the distinctive "pursed-lip/whistling" facial appearance imposes considerable psychological and social challenges.

Correction of microstomia is challenging with a high rate of recurrence. We report the successful treatment of microstomia using acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as an adjunct for intraoral lining with >1 year of follow-up.A 9-year-old international patient with severe immunodeficiency presented with severe microstomia because of recurrent oral infections. She had undergone 3 previous failed attempts to re-establish an adequate oral opening and was dependent on enteral nutrition via gastrostomy tube. She underwent release of the oral commissure scar contracture and orbicularis oris and the result

Patient. A 68-year-old man was operated on for squamous cell carcinoma (T3N3M0) of the maxilla creating the hemimaxillary surgical defect on right side. The remaining arch was completely edentulous. There was remarkable limitation in the oral opening with reduced perimeter of the oral cavity due to radiation and surgical scar contracture. This article describes prosthetic rehabilitation by modifying the design of the obturator and achieving the retention with dental implant. Discussion. Severe limitation in the oral opening may occur in clinical situations following the postsurgical management

Reduced mouth opening or microstomia is a frequently encountered condition in the field of prosthodontics. Microstomia is a challenge for prosthodontics right from impression making till the insertion of the prosthesis. Making impressions in patients with microstomia is often cumbersome for both patient and operator. Standard impression procedures are not of any help due to limited mouth opening, so the modification of standard impression procedure is often necessary while treating such patients. Modification in denture prosthesis in the form of split denture, flexible denture, hinged denture,

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor that is most often seen in children younger than 15 years of age. This pathology is found mainly in the head and neck region. Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma at early stages of life usually affects the dental and osseous development of children. Because of impaired development, microstomia can arise, making dental treatment more difficult. This article presents a patient with microstomia caused by resection of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the nasolabial region. The patient was treated with 5 dental implants and fixed hybrid prosthesis in the maxilla and

We report on a 1-month-old infant with blepharophimosis, telecanthus, ear anomalies, and microstomia. He also had a long philtrum and a narrow, high-arched palate. This case is very similar to the cases reported by Simosa et al. [1989: Am J Med Genet 32:184-186]. In addition, our patient had tongue tie and camptodactyly of fingers.
