[Remodeling midwifery by introducing sterilization in childbirth in the period of Republic of China].

In the period of the Republic of China, the maternal and infant mortality rates were high, most of which were caused by puerperal fever and neonatal tetanus. In this sense, Chinese traditional midwives were often regarded as "dirty". After western obstetrics was introduced into China in the late Qing Dynasty and the early period of the Republic of China, the occurrence of postpartum infection was effectively reduced with childbirth disinfection. To improve the health status of women and infants, the government of the Republic of China put in place measures to develop midwifery. The training of

The development of clinical indicators--the impact on midwifery practice in Queensland in the future.

Perineal trauma is the most frequently reported complication of labour and delivery in the Qld Perinatal Data Collection. It is documented that some individual accoucheurs seem to be particularly skillful in assisting at birth in a way that minimises perineal trauma. Recent trends within the Qld health industry have emphasised the importance of quality improvement activities focussing on health outcomes. Midwives accoucheur most of the "normal" deliveries in public hospitals, thus it is important that midwives play a leading part in the development and improvement of tools which identify quali

Midwifery triage and management of trauma and second/third trimester bleeding.

Trauma affects approximately 8% of all pregnancies, and bleeding affects nearly 5% of gestations. These two conditions are potentially life-threatening and require immediate management by the midwife. Trauma in pregnancy is commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents, falls, and assault. Although abruption resulting from trauma is a rare occurrence, injury caused by domestic violence, is associated with the greatest risk of obstetric complications. Bleeding in pregnancy has a number of etiologies. Midwives are well-prepared to safely and competently make a differential diagnosis of bleeding in

Neonatal admission and mortality in babies born in UK alongside midwifery units: a national population-based case-control study using the UK Midwifery Study System (UKMidSS).

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of and risk factors for neonatal unit admission, intrapartum stillbirth or neonatal death without admission, and describe outcomes, in babies born in an alongside midwifery unit (AMU). DESIGN: National population-based case-control study. METHOD: We used the UK Midwifery Study System to identify and collect data about 1041 women who gave birth in AMUs, March 2017 to February 2018, whose babies were admitted to a neonatal unit or died (cases) and 1984 controls from the same AMUs. We used multivariable logistic regression, generating adjusted OR (aOR) wit

Midwifery practice in Mongolia: Policy implications for accelerating care delivery transformation.

Midwives can play a significant role in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates as well as in improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries such as Mongolia. However, the shortage of midwives in Mongolia is severe. Despite the evidence indicating numerous challenges associated with substandard midwifery education and practice in Mongolia, there is a need for policy recommendations to accelerate the improvement of midwifery care delivery in the country. Therefore, we identified three main topics as key issues in Mongolian midwifery care: 1) the curr

Pre-service midwifery education in sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In response to a global call for more midwives, maternal health stakeholders have called for increased investment in midwifery pre-service education. Given the already long list of challenges and the increasing burden on health care systems due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to prioritize investment is acute, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. An important first step is to examine the current evidence. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed literature about pre-service midwifery education in sub-Saharan Africa. A search of studies published between 2015 a

Midwifery Provision of Home Birth Services: American College of Nurse-Midwives.

The number of women in the United States choosing to give birth at home has risen substantially in the past decade, creating an increased need for understanding of the evidence regarding the provision of midwifery care to women and families considering this option. The safety of home birth has been evaluated in observational studies in several industrialized nations, including the United States. Most studies find that women who are essentially healthy at term with a singleton fetus and give birth at home have positive outcomes and a lower rate of interventions during labor. Although some studi

Midwifery practice in perinatal palliative care: A scoping review and conceptual framework.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal palliative care (PPC) is a multidisciplinary, family-centred approach aimed at improving the quality of life and comfort of newborns with life-limiting conditions, and their families. Midwives can play a crucial role in supporting these pathways. However, their specific contribution within PPC remains underexplored in the scientific literature. AIM: To map the available evidence on the role and contributions of midwives in perinatal palliative care and to explore how midwifery practice is integrated into care strategies for pregnancies complicated by life-limiting fetal

Perinatal midwifery care demand in a tertiary hospital: A time-series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The chronic shortage of registered midwives and nurses is a serious global problem. However, current recommendations regarding midwifery staffing do not address operational staffing difficulties that arise from wide variations in care demand. The aim of this study was to describe shift-level care demand and available staffing resources in a tertiary hospital's maternity department. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective longitudinal study investigated a four-year timeframe (2019-2022). All registered midwives and nurses working a three-shift pattern in the prenatal unit, labo

[Pharmacology education on women's health, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding in Midwifery education].

Midwives are responsible professionals who support the sexual and reproductive health, rights, and welfare of individuals, families, and communities. In particular, midwives work in partnership with women to provide the necessary support, care and advice needed during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. Midwives conduct normal births on her own responsibility, support breastfeeding, provide care for newborns and infants, and fully release mother-infant's latent strengths. Midwives also contribute in adopting appropriate preventative measures to promote normal birth and breastfeedi
