Antimicrobial resistance of enteric pathogens in the Military Health System, 2009 - 2019.

BACKGROUND: Acute diarrhea (AD) can have significant impacts on military troop readiness. Medical providers must understand current trends of enteropathogen antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in service members (SMs) to inform proper, timely treatment options. However, little is known of enteric pathogen profiles across the Military Health System (MHS). The primary objectives of this study were to identify gaps in enteric pathogen surveillance within the MHS, describe the epidemiology of AMR in enteric pathogens, and identify trends across the MHS both within the Continental United States (CONUS)

Age at entry to UK military service and long-term mental health.

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that 'junior entry' to the UK Armed Forces (prior to age 17.5 years) increases the risk of adverse mental health outcomes. We used data from a large cohort of veterans to examine long-term mental health outcomes in veterans by age at entry to the UK Armed Forces, compared with non-veterans. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 78 157 veterans in Scotland, born between 1945 and 1995 and and 252 637 matched non-veterans, with up to 37 years follow-up, using Cox proportional hazard models to examine the association between veteran status and cumulative risk

Comparison of Nurse-Midwife and Physician Birth Outcomes in the Military Health System.

The purpose of this study is to identify the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of women cared for by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) versus physicians in the Military Health System (MHS) and compare birth outcomes between provider types. The MHS is one of America's largest and most complex health care systems. Using the Military Health System Data Repository, this retrospective study examined TRICARE beneficiaries who gave birth during 2012-2014. Analysis included frequency of patients by perinatal services, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis by provider type.

Barber-Surgeons in Military Surgery and Occupational Health in Finland, 1324-1944.

Barber-surgeons have existed as a medical profession in multiple countries for centuries. This article outlines the exciting history of the barber-surgeons in Finland, focusing on a time frame covering over 600 years, from the Middle Ages until the last barber-surgeon in Finland finished his practice during the Second World War. The barber-surgeons were the first healthcare professionals who focused on the healthcare of soldiers during times of both peace and war. They were able to treat wounds, conduct minor and even major surgeries and perform amputations. The development of the profession a

Offending behaviour, health and wellbeing of military veterans in the criminal justice system.

BACKGROUND: A small but significant proportion of military veterans become involved in the criminal justice system (CJS) after leaving service. Liaison and Diversion (L&D) services aim to identify vulnerable offenders in order to provide them with the health/welfare support they need, and (where possible) divert them away from custody. An administrative database of L&D service-users was utilised to compare the needs of veterans with those of non-veteran L&D service-users. METHOD: National data collected from 29 L&D services in 2015-2016 was utilised. Of the 62,397 cases, 1,067 (2%) reported p

[Health assessments of a military company stationed on the Maroni River in French Guiana].

Over a 5 month period (October 1996 to February 1997), a rotating company of 146 servicemen belonging to the Navy Airborne 6th Regiment were assigned along the Maroni River in French Guyana. During this mission, the medical personnel treated 387 local residents. Etiologies comprised 51 malaria attacks including 46 involving Plasmodium falciparum and 4 rattlesnake envenomations. The most common cause of consultation by military personnel was mycotic and staphylococcal skin infections, but 5 cases involving poor acclimatization were treated during the hot and dry season. Seven malaria attacks in

Opioid Prescribing Variation After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the US Military Health System.

INTRODUCTION: After laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), there is a wide variation in opioid prescription miligram morphine equivalent dose (MED) and refills across US medical institutions. Given wide variation and opioid prescription guidelines, it is essential to conduct thorough health services research across medical, surgical, and patient-level factors that can be implemented to improve system-wide prescribing practices. Therefore, this study describes discharge MED variation and opioid refill probability after emergent and nonemergent LC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort s

Chronic Health Conditions Among US Veterans Discharged From Military Service for Misconduct.

INTRODUCTION: In 2011, San Francisco passed the first citywide ordinance to improve the nutritional standards of children's meals sold at restaurants by preventing the giving away of free toys or other incentives with meals unless nutritional criteria were met. This study examined the impact of the Healthy Food Incentives Ordinance at ordinance-affected restaurants on restaurant response (eg, toy-distribution practices, change in children's menus), and the energy and nutrient content of all orders and children's-meal-only orders purchased for children aged 0 through 12 years. METHODS: Restaur

Type D personality, temperament, and mental health in military personnel awaiting deployment.

BACKGROUND: The Type D (distressed) personality refers to a general propensity to psychological distress defined by the combination of negative affectivity and social inhibition. Type D personality predicts poor mental and physical health in cardiac patients, but it has been argued that its assessment is affected by the state of illness. Therefore, validation of the Type D construct in healthy adults remains essential. PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were (1) to validate Type D personality against temperament and character dimensions in young, healthy adults and (2) to investigate the a

Enhancing Operational Readiness Through Temporomandibular Disorders Education in the Military Health System.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a prevalent musculoskeletal condition that significantly affects the health and operational readiness of military service members. Despite its widespread impact, available evidence supports that education on TMD screening, diagnosis, and management is insufficient across medical, dental, and allied health professions. Most health care providers receive little to no formal training in TMD, and existing continuing professional development programs often promote nonevidence-based approaches. This gap in education can contribute to frustration a
