Impact of extensively hydrolyzed infant formula on the probiotic and postbiotic properties of Lactobacillus fermentum in an in vitro co-culture model.

Early gut homeostasis is a balance between dietary antigen exposure, gut barrier function, microbiome establishment and orchestration of innate and adaptive immune responses. Imbalances during this early time of development can lead to increased susceptibility to immune reactions like allergy. Especially for infants with a predisposition to allergies and who cannot be exclusively breastfed, there are different human milk substitutes, including hydrolyzed infant formula, which are supposed to prevent allergy-associated mechanisms. The physiologic mechanism beyond the destruction of cow's milk a

Marketing Practices and Nutrition Content of Toddler Milk Across the Americas.

BACKGROUND: Toddler milk is a breastmilk substitute for young children, yet its marketing and nutritional profile across the Americas has not been systematically synthesized. METHODS: We conducted a content analysis documenting the prevalence of front-of-package claims and imagery on 389 toddler milk products from 14 countries in the Americas. We also compared the nutritional profile of toddler milk with plain cow's milk and chocolate-flavored cow's milk. RESULTS: Nearly all products (99%) displayed at least one front-of-package claim. Claim categories included nutrition-related (97%), healt

Case Studies to Document Strategies Used by Mothers to Overcome Significant Maternal Morbidity Challenges to Successful Breastfeeding.

INTRODUCTION: There is a scarcity of literature documenting how women facing maternal morbidity issues deal with challenges to breastfeeding. This case study documents challenges faced by two women, one who underwent major abdominal surgery immediately after a Caesarean section at 32 weeks, and the other who had a primary and secondary postpartum hemorrhage with repeated hospital admissions. MAIN ISSUE: In the first case, the key issues for lactation were the mother-infant separation and difficulty in initiation and sustaining breastfeeding due to abdominal surgery after her Caesarean section

Antibiotic Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Milk Alternatives.

The consumption of non-dairy milk is on the rise due to health benefits. Although there is increasing inclination towards milk alternatives (MA), there is limited data on antibiotic resistant bacteria in these substitutes. The aim of this study was to investigate antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated from MA. A total of 138 extracts from almonds (n = 63), cashew nuts (n = 36), and soybeans (n = 39) were analyzed for Enterobacteriaceae. The identification of the bacteria was based on biochemical and PCR methods. Antibiotic sensitivity was determined by using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusi

Cow's milk allergy: where have we come from and where are we going?

Since the 1930's the scientific literature on cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) has accumulated. Over the last decade new diagnostic tools and treatment approaches have been developed. The diagnosis of reproducible adverse reactions to cow's milk proteins (CMP), i.e. CMPA, still has to be confirmed by controlled elimination and challenge procedures. Advanced diagnostic testing using epitope and microarray technology may in the future improve the diagnostic accuracy of CMPA by determination of specific IgE against specific allergen components of cow's milk protein. The incidence of CMPA in earl

Influence of bran on bioavailability of chloramphenicol administered orally to pigs.

The present study was undertaken to determine if bran added to a fiber-free diet (milk) would modify the absorption of orally administered chloramphenicol (cmp) compared with that observed on a standard concentrates diet in pig. The plasma chloramphenicol level was maximal (0.47 +/- 0.26 microgram/mL), 3.5 h after a meal of concentrates containing 8 g of chloramphenicol palmitate; this highest concentration represented only 30% of that observed 12 h after a meal of substituted milk and 14% of the maximal plasma concentration of chloramphenicol detected 14 h after a milk meal when supplemented

An exploration on coconut milk stability by protein characterization, sterilization controlling, and alternative protein emulsifiers.

Coconut milk with high fat-to-protein ratio often encounters physical instability. Characterization of coconut protein could provide better understanding of the roles protein played in stability. The results showed coconut protein predominantly consisted of 11S globulin (53 kDa cocosin with acidic and basic polypeptides linked by disulfide bonds) and 7S globulin (53, 35, and 24 kDa). The easier precipitation of 11S globulin indicated poor emulsifying property, thus partly resulted in instability of coconut milk. Atmospheric pressure sterilization or ultra-high temperature instantaneous sterili

Comprehensive evaluation of d-allulose on the quality, flavor profile, and probiotic viability in Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG fermented milk.

d-Allulose has emerged as a promising sucrose substitute, yet its impact on the quality of probiotic fermented milk is not well understood. This study evaluated the effects of d-allulose on the viability, physicochemical properties, texture, stability, sensory quality, and volatile profile of fermented milk produced with Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG and Streptococcus thermophilus. d-Allulose was incorporated at levels of 0% to 10%. With this range, d-allulose maintained the viability of both strains in fermented milk. Among the tested treatments, moderate supplementation, particularly at 3%

World Allergy Organization (WAO) Diagnosis and Rationale for Action against Cow's Milk Allergy (DRACMA) guidelines update - X - Breastfeeding a baby with cow's milk allergy.

Cow's milk allergy is rare in exclusively breastfed infants. To support the continuation of breastfeeding an infant after diagnosis with a cow's milk allergy, it is critical to examine the evidence for and against any form of cow's milk elimination diet for lactating mothers. In this narrative review, we highlight the lack of high-quality evidence, hence subsequent controversy, regarding whether the minuscule quantities of cow's milk proteins detectable in human milk cause infant cow's milk allergy symptoms. Current clinical practice recommendations advise a 2-4 week trial of maternal cow's mi

Food supplementation programs and breastfeeding practices.

There has been insufficient evaluation of food supplementation programs and their effect on breastfeeding. On the one hand, they reach millions of childbearing women, often in rural areas with little or no other services, and act as a magnet for other health interventions to take place. On the other hand, the risks of substituting food assistance for breast milk and overburdening health personnel with feeding responsibilities, contradict breastfeeding promotion efforts. There is some evidence that focusing on pregnant women rather than infants will reduce these problems and will result in fewe

Camel milk: an alternative for cow's milk allergy in children.

Treatment of cow's milk allergy (CMA) in children includes avoidance of cow's milk and providing a milk substitute. This study was designed to determine whether CMA children could safely consume camel's milk as an alternative, and skin-prick test (SPT) to camel's milk could be a reliable tool in selecting them. Between April 2007 and February 2010, children with confirmed CMA seen at the Allergy-Immunology Clinic, Hamad Medical Corp., were enrolled into this prospective cohort study. Subjects had a detailed history and medical examination, complete blood count with differential count, total se

[Cow's milk consumption and iron deficiency anemia in children].

OBJECTIVE: To thoroughly investigate the association between the consumption of cow's milk and anemia in childhood. SOURCES OF DATA: The information was gathered from papers catalogued in Lilacs and MEDLINE and published during the last two decades, and also from textbooks and publications by international organizations. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Iron deficiency anemia is a severe public health problem in developing countries. Breast milk contains adequate iron for full term babies in the first 6 months. Thereafter, an additional iron-rich diet becomes essential. In recognition of the importa

Safety of soy-based infant formulas containing isoflavones: the clinical evidence.

Soy protein has been used in infant feeding in the West for nearly 100 y. Soy protein infant formulas have evolved in this interval to become safe and effective alternatives for infants whose nutritional needs are not met with human milk or formulas based on cow's milk. Modern soy formulas meet all nutritional requirements and safety standards of the Infant Formula Act of 1980. They are commonly used in infants with immunoglobulin E-mediated cow's milk allergy (at least 86% effective), lactose intolerance, galactosemia, and as a vegetarian human milk substitute. Largely as a result of research

Goat's milk allergy without cow's milk allergy: suppression of non-cross-reactive epitopes on caprine β-casein.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Goat's milk (GM) allergy associated with tolerance to cow's milk (CM) has been reported in patients without history of CM allergy and in CM-allergic children successfully treated with oral immunotherapy. The IgE antibodies from GM-allergic/CM-tolerant patients recognize caprine β-casein (βcap) without cross-reacting with bovine β-casein (βbov) despite a sequence identity of 91%. In this study, we investigated the non-cross-reactive IgE-binding epitopes of βcap. METHODS: Recombinant βcap was genetically modified by substituting caprine domains with the bovine counterp

Nanoplastics and Neurodegeneration in ALS.

Plastic production, which exceeds one million tons per year, is of global concern. The constituent low-density polymers enable spread over large distances and micro/nano particles (MNPLs) induce organ toxicity via digestion, inhalation, and skin contact. Particles have been documented in all human tissues including breast milk. MNPLs, especially weathered particles, can breach the blood-brain barrier, inducing neurotoxicity. This has been documented in non-human species, and in human-induced pluripotent stem cell lines. Within the brain, MNPLs initiate an inflammatory response with pro-inflamm

North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition Position Paper: Plant-based Milks.

Parents and caretakers are increasingly feeding infants and young children plant-based "milk" (PBM) alternatives to cow milk (CM). The US Food and Drug Administration currently defines "milk" and related milk products by the product source and the inherent nutrients provided by bovine milk. Substitution of a milk that does not provide a similar nutritional profile to CM can be deleterious to a child's nutritional status, growth, and development. Milk's contribution to the protein intake of young children is especially important. For almond or rice milk, an 8 oz serving provides only about 2% o

Plant-based drinks for vegetarian or vegan toddlers: Nutritional evaluation of commercial products, and review of health benefits and potential concerns.

There is an increasing trend today towards plant-based diets in western society, often resulting in milk restriction. In the case of very young children, the direct substitution of milk by other foods, without proper nutritional advice, may lead to a lack of nutrients and hence to growth and development alterations. This study focuses on the nutritional assessment of various commercially available plant-based drinks, to determine their adequacy as alternatives to ruminant milk, in relation to the nutritional requirements of toddlers (1-3 years old), and to establish whether other sources of nu
