A Dyadic Analysis of the Relationships Between Antisocial and Borderline Personality and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration.

Cluster B personality disorders of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been implicated in predicting intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. However, most studies include only male perpetrators and ignore the dyadic interactions among couples. The current study examines the interactive role of both partners' ASPD and BPD features to predict IPV perpetration with a dyadic perspective. Seventy-seven married heterosexual couples reporting recent partner violence participated in the study. Each partner completed the Revised Conflict Tactics S

Personality and psychiatric disorders in women affected by polycystic ovary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder among fertile women. Studies show reduced quality of life, anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, eating disorder, and sexual dysfunction, but the etiology of these disturbs remains still debated. The aim of our study is to verify whether this hyperandrogenic syndrome characterizes a strong psycho(patho)logical personality. METHOD: Sixty PCOS subjects (mean age 25.8 ± 4.7 years) were evaluated by anthropometric, metabolic, hormonal, clinical, and psychological parameters. After the certainty of the diagn

The development of a specialist hostel for the community management of personality disordered offenders.

BACKGROUND: Since the late 1990s, in England and in Wales, there has been increasing interest in the particular challenges of managing offenders with personality disorder (PD). AIMS: To describe the first 93 high-risk residents with PD who were completing sentences under life licence, parole or probation, and their outcome. METHODS: We investigated the nature of the offences residents had previously committed, their psychological

Impact of mental disorders on low adherence to antiretroviral therapy in people living with HIV in Spain.

The relationship between mental disorders other than depression or anxiety, and low adherence to both antiretroviral treatment (ART) and linkage to HIV care are unclear. The aim of our study was to compare the prevalence of mental disorders in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Spain who present low versus high adherence to ART. We performed a cross-sectional study comparing two groups of PLHIV: 20 PLHIV with low adherence and 80 PLHIV with high adherence to ART. PLHIV who met at least one of the following criteria were included in the low-adherence group: virological failure (HIV-VL > 50 copie

Alcohol binge drinking in adolescence and psychological profile: Can the preclinical model crack the chicken-or-egg question?

During adolescence, internal and external factors contribute to engaging with alcohol binge drinking (ABD), putting at risk the neurodevelopment of brain regions crucial for emotional control and stress coping. This research assessed the prevalence of ABD in late adolescent students of Southern Italy and characterized their psychological profile and drinking motives. Translational effects of alcohol binge drinking in the animal model were also studied. Seven hundred and fifty-nine high school students of both sexes (aged 18-20) were recruited. Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumpti

Frustration Tolerance and Personality Traits in Patients With Substance Use Disorders.

Previous research has suggested the prevalence of certain personality traits, some of which are related to a disorganized attachment, in substance abuse disorders. Further, frustration tolerance (FT) has been proposed as an important factor in addiction, both at the inception-following the "self-medication" hypothesis-and regarding treatment compliance. In turn, an inadequate response to frustrating events has been also associated with a disrupted attachment. Our goal is to explore the mediational role of FT in the relationship between personality traits and two different treatments for substa

Psychiatric Comorbidity Outweighs Headache Subtype As A Predictor Of Disability In Chronic Daily Headache: A Matched-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: Objective: Chronic daily headache (CDH) is a prevalent neuropsychiatric condition. We aimed to quantify concurrent Axis I psychiatric comorbidity and personality pathology in CDH versus matched controls and identify factors independently associated with headache-related disability. Seventy-five ICHD-3-confirmed CDH patients and 75 age- and sex-matched controls completed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI v5.0), Millon Clinical Multiax

Psychopathology among anabolic-androgenic steroid using and non-using female athletes in Norway.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are primarily used to improve physical appearance and increase lean muscle mass. Due to their masculinizing properties, the majority of people using AAS are men; however, AAS use among females may increase with changing body ideals trending towards a more muscular appearance. AAS use among males have been associated with risk-taking behavior, and increased prevalence of personality disorders and psychopathology. As a result of low perceived prevalence and stigma among females who use AAS, the relationship between AAS use and psychopathology in this population

Attraction Versus Action in Pedophilic Desire: The Role of Personality Traits and Childhood Experience.

OBJECTIVE: Comparison of pedophilic individuals who do and do not refrain from sexually engaging with children may offer critically important information regarding the differential contributors to pedophilic attraction versus behavior. This study compared 5 traits that are potentially contributory to pedophilic attraction or behavior in both minor-attracted persons (MAPs) who refrain from sexually engaging with minors (nonacting MAPs) and those who have acted on pedophilic attractions and subsequently entered the criminal justice system (forensic MAPs). METHODS: Subjects included 195 nonactin

Axis I and II disorders as long-term predictors of mental distress: a six-year prospective follow-up of substance-dependent patients.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of lifetime psychiatric disorders among help-seeking substance abusers has been clearly established. However, the long-term course of psychiatric disorders and mental distress among help-seeking substance abusers is still unclear. The aim of this research was to examine the course of mental distress using a six-year follow-up study of treatment-seeking substance-dependent patients, and to explore whether lifetime Axis I and II disorders measured at admission predict the level of mental distress at follow-up, when age, sex, and substance-use variables measured both
