Genetic polymorphism of the serum alpha-protease inhibitor (PI) and group-specific component (GC) in minks was revealed using one-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting. Two codominant alleles were identified at each of the two loci. The data ruled out the possibility of any linkage between the PI, GC and the coat colour gene Crystal (Cr).

An antiserum raised against N-amino-3-propyl melatonin bound to a protein carrier was used to visualize melatonin by immunohistochemistry and to measure melatonin concentration by radioimmunoassay in the pineal gland of intact mink females killed throughout the 24 h cycle and females killed after a bilateral ablation of the cervical superior ganglion. Melatonin immunoreactivity revealed by immunofluorescence or by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex was observed in the cytoplasm of presumed pinealocytes of all the females. Circadian changes in pineal melatonin content were not visualized by

The pancreas of female mink has been investigated by transmission electron microscopic means. The following results can be summarized: The pancreas of the mink is built up by the well known gland lobules as found in many other species; each lobule contains branched ducts with acini. The acinar cells are characteristically packed with granular endoplasmic reticulum, large Golgi apparatuses, and zymogen granules. Particularly interesting are large vacuoles, which seem to emerge directly from the endoplasmic reticular cysternae. The centroacinar cells form relatively extended protrusions or pseud

Following a long series of injections of homologous immunoglobulin in complete and incomplete Freund's adjuvant into mink, a moderate elevation in the level of gammaglobulin in the serum was observed in a few animals. Relatively mild pathological changes also were seen in liver, spleen, lymph nodes, lungs and kidney. It is concluded that the injection of Freund's adjuvant, under the experimental conditions described, produced lesions which were readily distinguishable from the lesions characteristic of aleutian disease of mink.

An epizootic of mastitis in mink due to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli associated with food poisoning was studied on a Connecticut ranch with 3,500 mink. In the course of the epizootic, approximately 2,000 mink kits and 480 adult mink, mostly nursing females, died within 10 days. Affected females had swollen mammary glands due to acute mastitis; S. aureus was isolated in pure culture from 2 mink and E. coli in pure culture from a 3rd. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the organs of 1 mink kit, S. aureus and E. coli from a 2nd kit, and E. coli from a 3rd. The organs of the rem

Carotid body tumors were found incidentally at necropsy in 15 ranch mink (Mustela vision), mostly royal pastels, kept for studies on slow viral diseases. The mink, five males and ten females, were 77 to 135 months old (mean age 107 months). Loosely or firmly attached at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, and 11 larger tumors were smooth-surfaced, discrete, pale brown, globoid masses that varied from 2.5 to 16 mm in diameter. Four tumors of microscopic size occurred in otherwise normal-looking carotid bodies. All were composed of densely packed polygonal cells disposed in sheets and

Pulmonary lymphoid tissue was studied histologically in mink infected experimentally and naturally with Aleutian disease virus, an infection characterised by systemic lymphoid tissue hyperplasia. Lymphoid tissue hyperplasia was observed in the lamina propria of the bronchial tree, in perivascular tissue, in interlobular septae and subpleurally by day 42 after experimental aerosol infection. Four forms of pulmonary lymphoid tissue were recognised: lymphoepithelial nodules or bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue; lymphoid clusters; lymph nodes and diffuse lymphoid tissue. The cel components of th

The present study describes an outbreak of Streptococcus canis (S.canis) infection in a commercial mink farm in West Macedonia, Greece, and investigates its clinical, pathological and microbiological features. In late February 2024, approximately 300 out of 5,100 mink (5.9%) developed purulent abscesses primarily located on the head, while some animals exhibited neurological signs, including depression, weakness and lethargy. The farmer reported similar incidences in animals also the previous year. Necropsy revealed localized abscessation, and purulent meningoencephalitis was observed in two ca

BACKGROUND: For proper treatment of bacterial infections in mink, knowledge of the causative agents and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns is crucial. The used antimicrobials are in general not registered for mink, i.e. most usage is "off-label". In this study, we report the patterns of antimicrobial resistance among pathogenic bacteria isolated from Danish mink during the period 2014-2016. The aim of this investigation was to provide data on antimicrobial resistance and consumption, to serve as background knowledge for new veterinary guidelines for prudent and optimal antimicrobial u

Hemorrhagic pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains one of the most costly infectious diseases among farmed mink and commonly leads to large economic losses during mink production. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of using phages as a therapy against hemorrhagic pneumonia in mink. A broad-host-range phage from the Podoviridae family, YH30, was isolated using the mink-originating P. aeruginosa (serotype G) D7 strain as a host. The genome of YH30 was 72,192bp (54.92% G+C), contained 86 open reading frames and lacked regions encoding known virulence factors,

Eight Mink (Mustela vison) were inoculated orally with Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV). Three mink were killed at the onset of clinical signs and the other mink died spontaneously after inoculation. The incubation period ranged from 72 to 96 hours and was followed by a short illness characterised by increasing salivation, vomiting and retching, depression and coma. Microscopically, lesions were confined to the brain stem and consisted of a discrete non-suppurative encephalitis. Viral antigen was detected by an immunoperoxidase technique predominantly in association with specific lesions, althou

Strains of Staphylococcus (S.) intermedius from dogs, pigeons, horses and mink were typed by comparison of rRNA gene restriction fragment length polymorphisms (ribotyping) and the resulting ribotypes examined by cluster-analysis. Digestion of whole-cell DNA with HindIII resulted in 9 ribotypes with 3 to 4 bands. Separation of isolates from different host animal species was not possible. EcoRI yielded 11 different patterns with 4 to 9 fragments. The EcoRI-ribotypes of all canine strains grouped in one cluster encompassing four closely related ribotypes. Isolates were indistinguishable with resp

Aleutian disease of mink is a viral illness characterized by systemic plasmocytosis and hypergammaglobulinemia. Some affected mink develop a monoclonal gammaglobulin spike and Bence-Jones proteinuria. A case of multiple myeloma in a mink handler with a 15-year history of exposure to Aleutian mink is presented. Previously reported cases of possible Aleutian disease (AD) in man are discussed and the pathogenesis of AD reviewed. Aleutian disease virus (ADV) may produce asymptomatic infection in exposed individuals. Available data suggest symptomatic disease in humans is extremely rare.

The search for antigens capable of causing immune-complex-mediated glomerulonephritis continues. Modified live-virus vaccines commercially available for veterinary use are a possible source. In this study, repeated vaccination of mink with live-virus vaccines was investigated as a model for vaccine-induced glomerular injury. Three groups of 10-wk-old mink, 15 per group, were vaccinated once with 4-way vaccine against distemper, Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, botulism and mink viral enteritis. Subsequently, all mink in each group each were vaccinated either with the 4-way vaccine, a monovale

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) of the mink is restricted to the area of the Fissura palatina and thus always topographically related to the Ductus incisivus (DI). The VNO and DI have also a functional relation because the vomeronasal duct ends in the incisive duct. On the other hand, as the DI has its mouth in the Papilla incisiva there is a communication between the VNO and the oral cavity. The vomeronasal cartilage, approximately in 1/6 of its length, wraps completely the parenchyma of the VNO whose main structure is the vomeronasal duct, with two different epithelia: sensory receptor in the me

Aleutian disease (AD) is caused by a persistent infection of mink with an autonomous parvovirus. Chronically infected mink develop widespread plasmacytosis, a marked elevation of their serum IgG, and immune complex disease. A substantial fraction of the IgG in the serum of mink with Aleutian disease may be specifically absorbed by monolayer cell cultures infected with Aleutian disease virus. The maximum percentage of absorption of IgG found was 81% in a mink with 5.4 g/dl of IgG. Mink with the monoclonal gammopathy of Aleutian disease had a particularly large percentage of the IgG absorbed. Th

Lyophilized vaccines prepared according to the method of Käber, modified by Achmarine, are utilized in the Soviet Union for the immunization of mink against botulin of the type C-alpha. These vaccines can be conserved more than a year at laboratory temperature without losing their efficacity. A Table allows a rapid and accurate determination of the quantity of vaccine to be injected into the mink to provide the same efficacity as a dose of standard vaccine.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of sudden death of pregnant farmed mink in Finland occurred during the busiest whelping period in the spring of 2013. The affected farms were all located in western Finland in a rather narrow geographic area, Ostrobothnia. Dead mink from 22 farms were submitted for laboratory diagnostics to the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira). The carcasses were necropsied and tissue specimens were prepared for histology. Samples of internal organs and peritoneal fluid were cultured bacteriologically.
RESULTS: Major pathological findings included hemorrhagic vaginal discharge, se

Efforts to increase mink reproductive success (live births and litter sizes) can be partly assessed by measurement of blood progesterone levels. However, the stress of blood sampling increases the incidence of failed matings, aborted fetuses and death of the dam. We have therefore non-invasively measured fecal progesterone metabolite (progestin) concentrations during the reproductive cycle of mink. We tested the hypothesis that fecal progestin concentrations during the window of implantation (late March-early April) will, (1): be higher for whelping than non-whelping mink, and (2): be higher f
