[A case of bacteremic group A streptococcus infection with organ dysfunction following a minor skin abrasion].

A 20-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaints of high fever and pain around his right hip joint. He had his right knee injured with a slight abrasion three weeks before. The diagnosis of suppurative lymphadenitis of inguen was made, and intravenous cefotiam was started. Despite these treatments his fever continued, general edema and dry cough appeared. Arterial blood gas showed severe hypoxia and chest X ray revealed marked cardiomegaly associated with ground-glass opacity over bilateral lower pulmonary fields. Slight renal insufficiency was also observed. On the fi

Fatal group A streptococcal infection with toxic shock syndrome: complicating minor orthopedic trauma.

Since 1987, reports have appeared of a streptococcal toxic shock syndrome in various clinical settings. None have appeared in the orthopaedic literature. Between 1989 and 1991 at our institution three patients with relatively minor orthopaedic injuries or procedures died of group A streptococcal infections complicated by toxic shock syndrome. The manifestations of this syndrome included rapid progression of systemic sepsis, necrotizing soft-tissue infections, acute renal failure, adult respiratory distress syndrome, and coagulopathy. All three patients died despite aggressive resuscitative mea

Analysis of injury mechanism of the elderly and non-elderly groups in minor motor vehicle accidents.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the injury patterns of noncatastrophic accidents by individual age groups. METHODS: Data were collected from the Korean In-Depth Accident Study database based on actual accident investigation. The noncatastrophic criteria were classified according to U.S. experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendations for field triage guidelines of high-risk automobile crash criteria by vehicle intrusions more than 12 in. on occupant sites (including the roof) and more than 18 in. on any site. Population-based screening for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes risk among migrant origin and ethnic minority groups in Europe: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Although some migrant origin groups in Europe show elevated risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), information is sparse and fragmented. This study examines availability and possibilities for harmonization of health examination survey (HES) data on major determinants of CVD and T2D among migrant origin and ethnic minority groups in EU Member states and EU4Health associated countries (Norway, Iceland, Ukraine, Moldova, Montenegro). METHODS: We conducted a scoping review, following PRISMA-ScR in PubMed and Web of Science, supplemented by targeted grey l

Teachers' perspectives on barriers and motivators to physical activity participation in children from ethnic minority groups in Newcastle upon Tyne: A qualitative study.

Physical inactivity among children in Western countries, especially children from ethnic minority groups, is a global health concern. Schools provide an ideal setting to address children's physical activity needs, with teachers playing a major role. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore teachers' perspectives on barriers and motivators to physical activity participation in children from ethnic minority groups and to determine through their suggestions, how schools can be better supported to provide a physical activity-enabling environment. A purposive sample of eight primary school t

Prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis in ethnic minority groups on both sides of the China-Myanmar border, and assessment of risk factors.

Blastocystis is one of the most common intestinal parasites in humans worldwide. To understand its prevalence and to explore the risk factors for Blastocystis in humans in developing countries, a molecular epidemiological investigation of Blastocystis was conducted in ethnic minority groups on both sides of the China-Myanmar border. A total of 461 fecal specimens were collected from 289 Yao people in China and 172 Wa people in Myanmar, together with a questionnaire for each participant. Based on sequence analysis of the partial small subunit of ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene (barcode region or

[An exploratory study on the diagnostic cutoff value of International HIV-associated Dementia Scale in minority ethnic groups with different educational levels, in Guangxi].

OBJECTIVE: Using Intelligence Scale of Mini Mental State Estimated (MMSE) as the gold standard to determine the relevance of International HIV-associated Dementia Scale (IHDS) in minority ethnic areas in Guangxi populations with different cultural values. Corresponding boundary value related to the authenticity and reliability on IHDS were also evaluated. METHODS: 200 patients with HIV infection were randomly selected from the minority ethnic groups in Guangxi. For each infected person, MMSE and IHDS blind scale were tested at the same period. Using the results from MMSE scale test as the gol

Cultural Adaptations to the Assessment and Treatment of Trauma Experiences Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

A higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exists among racial and ethnic minority groups who experience trauma; however, little is known about cultural adaptations of trauma assessments and interventions, or whether those adaptations meet cultural needs. This systematic review examined the effectiveness and experiences of culturally adapted trauma assessments and interventions for adults from racial and ethnic minority groups. Empirical studies investigating culturally adapted trauma assessment and/or interventions targeting adults from racial and ethnic minority groups were

Type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance in European children and adolescents with obesity -- a problem that is no longer restricted to minority groups.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes is an increasing problem in Europe. We determined the prevalence of impaired glucose regulation in a predominantly Caucasian cohort of 491 children and adolescents with obesity. METHODS: Fasting glucose and insulin levels were determined in all 491 subjects. Patients with an abnormal fasting glucose or with additional risk factors (positive family history of type 2 diabetes, acanthosis nigricans, hyperlipidemia; n=102) underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT; 1.75 g glucose/kg body weight). Homeostasis model assessment

Familiarity among kin has minor effects beyond grouping for escape response in a shoaling fish.

Prey have evolved cost-effective antipredator manoeuvres to evade predators, and living in a group is a common strategy employed to improve survival. Associating with familiar conspecifics, particularly kin, may further enhance these strategies by improving the flow of reliable information concerning the type and magnitude of nearby threats. This study investigated the influence of familiarity among shoalmates on the activity and escape responses of a shoaling damselfish. We examined the routine swimming and fast-start response of juvenile spiny Chromis (Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Bleeker 18

The Effect of Limb Salvage Efforts in Different Age Groups: Relationships Between Major and Minor Amputations.

"Limb salvage" efforts, such as performing minor amputations before infections spread proximally from the foot to decrease major lower extremity amputation, are an important part of healthcare today. It is unclear whether these efforts are preventing the number of major amputations and improving patients' quality of life and the cost-effectiveness of the U.S. healthcare system. Rates of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NLEA) among patients with diabetes decreased in the early 2000s but rebounded in the 2010s. We analyzed the proportion of major amputations and differences in amputatio

Implementing CenteringPregnancy Group Prenatal Care for Minority Women Living with HIV at an Urban University Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women with HIV require sustained education and support throughout pregnancy to achieve healthy perinatal outcomes. To enhance prenatal care for women with HIV, the Prenatal Immunology Service at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine adapted the Centering Healthcare Institute's CenteringPregnancy curriculum to include HIV content. Nurse-midwives introduced the curriculum in a pilot project to learn if women would enroll in group prenatal care. A retrospective record review was conducted to evaluate perinatal outcomes among women with HIV who received prenatal

Duffy and Kidd blood group antigens: minor histocompatibility antigens involved in renal allograft rejection?

BACKGROUND: Minor histocompatibility antigens have been poorly defined. Whether Duffy (FY) and Kidd (JK), polymorphic and immunogenic blood group antigens, widely distributed in human organs, expressed and functional in the kidney, could function as minor histocompatibility antigens and be implicated in renal allograft rejection was questioned. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective, homogeneous, single-center cohort of 370 renal transplants was analyzed. In all donor/recipient pairs, FY and JK polymorphisms were identified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. In all donor/recipient pai

Perceptions of cervical cancer prevention among a group of ethnic minority women in Denmark-A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening (CCS) and human papillomavirus vaccination (HPVV) are effective measures against cervical cancer (CC). Attendance in HPVV and CCS provides the greatest protection, while combined non-attendance in HPVV and CCS provides little to no protection. It is hence concerning that some large ethnic minority groups show considerably lower HPVV and CCS attendance than other women-especially women from Middle-Eastern and North African (MENA) countries and Pakistan. Little is, however, known about the reasons for this low combined attendance pattern n. AIM: To explore

Telephone outreach by community workers to improve uptake of NHS Health Checks in more deprived localities and minority ethnic groups: a qualitative investigation of implementation.

BACKGROUND: NHS Health Checks is a national cardiovascular risk assessment and management programme in England. To improve equity of uptake in more deprived, and Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities, a novel telephone outreach intervention was developed. The outreach call included an invitation to an NHS Health Check appointment, lifestyle questions, and signposting to lifestyle services. We examined the experiences of staff delivering the intervention. METHODS: Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 10 community Telephone Outreach Workers (TOWs) making outreach c

Recent trends in survival of adult patients with acute leukemia: overall improvements, but persistent and partly increasing disparity in survival of patients from minority groups.

The survival of younger patients with acute leukemia has improved in the early 21(st) century, but it is unknown whether people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds have benefited equally. Using cancer registry data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program, we assessed trends in 5-year relative survival for patients aged 15 years or more with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute myeloblastic leukemia divided by racial and ethnic group, including non-Hispanic whites, African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asian-Pacific Islanders in the 1990s and the early 21(st) century.
