Clinical significance of Proteus mirabilis bacteriuria in dogs, risk factors and antimicrobial susceptibility.

The objectives of this study were to describe the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility and clinical significance of Proteus mirabilis in canine bacteriuria and to identify the risk factors associated with P. mirabilis urinary tract infections. This is a retrospective observational study of 48 P. mirabilis-positive canine urinary cultures. Only 22 of the 48 P. mirabilis isolates (45.8%) were non-susceptible to at least one tested antimicrobial. Most P. mirabilis isolates (98%) were susceptible to enrofloxacin, 93.7% to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and 85.4% to ampicillin, cephalothin, and trim

Oral administration of Proteus mirabilis damages dopaminergic neurons and motor functions in mice.

Recently, studies on the relationship between gut dysbiosis and Parkinson's disease (PD) have increased, but whether a specific gut bacterium may cause PD remains unexplored. Here, we report, for the first time, that a specific gut bacterium directly induces PD symptoms and dopaminergic neuronal damage in the mouse brain. We found that the number of Enterobacteriaceae, particularly Proteus mirabilis, markedly and commonly increased in PD mouse models. Administration of P. mirabilis isolated from PD mice significantly induced motor deficits, selectively caused dopaminergic neuronal damage and i

Regional outbreak of CTX-M-2 β-lactamase-producing Proteus mirabilis in Japan.

Proteus mirabilis is a common cause of urinary tract infection. Wild-type P. mirabilis strains are usually susceptible to penicillins and cephalosporins, but occurrences of P. mirabilis producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) have been recently reported. Here, we surveyed the prevalence of cefotaxime resistance among P. mirabilis strains at seven different hospitals in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and investigated their molecular epidemiology to explain the mechanism of their spread. The prevalence of cefotaxime resistance among P. mirabilis increased annually, from 10.1 % in 1998 to 2

Complicated catheter-associated urinary tract infections due to Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) represent the most common type of nosocomial infection and are a major health concern due to the complications and frequent recurrence. These infections are often caused by Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. Gram-negative bacterial species that cause CAUTIs express a number of virulence factors associated with adhesion, motility, biofilm formation, immunoavoidance, and nutrient acquisition as well as factors that cause damage to the host. These infections can be reduced by limiting catheter usage and ensuring that health care professio

[WITHDRAWN: [Clinical strain of Proteus mirabilis able to produce a plasmid mediated ceftazidimase.]].

Resistance to third generation cephalosporins due to the acquisition and expression of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) enzymes among Gram negative bacteria continue to pose a challenge to infection management worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the implication of the enzymatic mechanism and to describe the properties of ESBLs from a clinical strain of Proteus mirabilis NC4150 isolated in the intensive care unit at the Military Hospital in Tunisia during the period 2004. The isolate was identified, tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and analysed for presence of ESBL

Encrustation of indwelling urethral catheters by Proteus mirabilis biofilms growing in human urine.

The encrustation and blockage of four types of urinary catheters was studied in a simple laboratory model of the catheterized bladder. Pooled human urine was supplied to the bladder chamber at 0.5 mL/min. The bladder urine was inoculated with a clinical strain of Proteus mirabilis that had been isolated from an encrusted catheter. The models were operated until the catheters blocked and atomic absorption spectrometry was used to assess the amounts of calcium and magnesium deposited on the catheters. Scanning electron microscopy was also used to locate and assess the degree of encrustation. All

[Alkaline encrusted cystitis secondary to Proteus mirabilis infection in a HIV infected patient].

We described for the first time an alkaline encrusting cystitis in a patient with the acquired immune deficiency. This is an entity characterized by severe dysuria and long standing urinary frequency, alkaline urine and radiographically visible calcification of the urinary bladder. It has been observed in patients with permanent Foley catheter, persistent infections due to microorganisms with urolytic activity, urinary bilharziosis or tuberculosis, or malignant bladder tumors. None of these entities were described and the patient had all conditions for this syndrome.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial resistance of Proteus mirabilis in a Brazilian hospital.

This study analyzes the resistance and virulence profiles of Proteus mirabilis isolates obtained from patients admitted to the University Hospital of Londrina, Paraná, between 2019 and 2022. We evaluated the antimicrobial resistance phenotypes, genes associated with resistance, biofilm formation through a phenotypic assay, and the presence of specific virulence genes. When comparing the "pre-pandemic" (2019) and "pandemic" (2020-2022) periods, we observed an increase in resistance rates to all tested antimicrobials. Persisters of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis: A Common Phenomenon and Different Behavior Profiles.

Persisters of infectious agents are capable of surviving antibiotic treatment so the emergence of these subpopulations need to be overcome. In this study, we aimed to isolate, characterize and inhibit persister subpopulation in two clinical isolates Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis. Different behavior profiles between the two isolates could be observed. The results of dose-dependent killing curve revealed that 2.3% (Klebsiella pneumoniae) versus 1.3% (Proteus mirabilis) persister cells could be recovered using 500 and 30 ug/ml ciprofloxacin, respectively. Upon resuscitation, persist

Influence of various uropathogens on crystallization of urine mineral components caused by Proteus mirabilis.

Infectious urolithiasis is a consequence of long-standing urinary tract infections with urease-positive bacteria, especially Proteus spp. However, because of the often mixed nature of urinary tract infections, in the case of urinary stones formation, several species of bacteria may be involved in the process. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of the bacterial species: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Providencia stuartii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus on the crystallization caused by Proteus mirabilis. The studies were conducted in synthetic urine

Chromosomal Amplification of the blaOXA-58 Carbapenemase Gene in a Proteus mirabilis Clinical Isolate.

Horizontal gene transfer may occur between distantly related bacteria, thus leading to genetic plasticity and in some cases to acquisition of novel resistance traits. Proteus mirabilis is an enterobacterial species responsible for human infections that may express various acquired β-lactam resistance genes, including different classes of carbapenemase genes. Here we report a Proteus mirabilis clinical isolate (strain 1091) displaying resistance to penicillin, including temocillin, together with reduced susceptibility to carbapenems and susceptibility to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins. Whole-cell Proteus mirabilis urease inhibition by aminophosphinates for the control of struvite formation.

The study evaluated the in vitro impact of a series of aminophosphinic urease inhibitors on Proteusmirabilis. The group of compounds comprised structurally diverse analogues of diamidophosphate built on an N-C-P scaffold. The influence of urease inhibition on urea-splitting activity was assessed by whole-cell pH-static kinetic measurements. The potential to prevent struvite formation was determined by monitoring changes in pH and ionic composition of artificial urine medium during P. mirabilis growth. The most active compounds exhibited stronger positive effect on urine stability than the ackn

Genomic and Biological Characterization of a Novel Proteus mirabilis Phage with Anti-Biofilm Activity.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Proteus mirabilis poses a significant threat in porcine farming and public health, highlighting the need for alternative biocontrol agents. This study aimed to isolate and characterize a lytic bacteriophage with therapeutic potential against MDR P. mirabilis. Using the clinical MDR P. mirabilis strain Pm 07 as host, a bacteriophage, vB_Pmc_P-07 (P-07), was successfully isolated from fecal and sewage samples via an enrichment protocol. Phage P-07 forms plaques surrounded by a distinct translucent "halo," suggesting the production of depolymerase. It ac

Clonal Dissemination of NDM-Producing Proteus mirabilis in a Teaching Hospital in Sousse, Tunisia.

Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) is an opportunistic pathogen involved in urinary tract infections as well as various nosocomial infections. Emerging resistances to beta-lactams in this species complicates potential treatment since it is intrinsically resistant to colistin. Eleven isolates of carbapenem-non-susceptible P. mirabilis were identified in Sousse Hospital, Tunisia, from January 2018 to December 2022. MICs were determined and isolates were sequenced to determine their resistomes, sequence types, virulence factors, and their clonal relationships. Susceptibility testing showed that all

Use of quorum sensing antagonists to deter the formation of crystalline Proteus mirabilis biofilms.

Proteus mirabilis biofilms are a major cause of urinary catheter blockage. Antibiotic-impregnated catheters used to prevent catheter blockage have achieved limited success. Research has examined the efficacy of quorum sensing inhibitors against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms, but there are few reports of the effects of these compounds against crystalline P. mirabilis biofilms. This study examined the effect of two quorum sensing antagonists, p-nitrophenyl glycerol (PNPG) and tannic acid, against crystalline P. mirabilis biofilms. Tannic acid and PNPG were observed to inhibit the quorum sensin

Comparison of PCR-based molecular markers for the characterization of Proteus mirabilis clinical isolates.

Proteus mirabilis is one of the most important pathogens associated with complicated urinary tract infections (acute pyelonephritis, bladder infections, kidney stones) and bacteremia, affecting patients with anatomical abnormalities, immunodeficiency, and long-term urinary catheterization. For epidemiological purposes, various molecular typing methods, such as pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) or ribotyping, have been developed for this pathogen. However, these methods are labor intensive and time-consuming. We evaluated the discriminatory power of several PCR-based fingerprinting methods

Clinical-Microbiological Discordance and Delayed Mortality in OXA-48/ESBL-Producing Proteus mirabilis Infections.

INTRODUCTION: OXA-48/extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Proteus mirabilis may appear susceptible to carbapenems in routine testing, potentially resulting in inappropriate therapeutic decisions. We aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes and the association between antimicrobial therapy and mortality. METHODS: We conducted a single-center observational study including 1254 patients with P. mirabilis infections (2017-2024). Seventy-nine OXA-48/ESBL cases (6.3%) were matched 2:1 with non-OXA-48/ESBL controls based on age, comorbidity, infection source, and severity. OXA-48 production was
