Advancing Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy in Missouri (MO-PAT): Innovation at the Speed of Safety.

The United States is facing a growing behavioral health crisis. Now more than ever, novel, safe and effective treatments are needed. Over the past decade, clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies (PAT) have shown promising results for treating a number of common behavioral health conditions with minimal adverse effects. This article provides a brief historical and sociopolitical context surrounding PAT, discusses unanswered questions related to the safety and quality of PAT, and charts a pathway forward through the complex policy, legal, and social barriers to uptake for the sta

Implications of Prenatal Exposure to the Spring 2011 Alabama and Missouri Tornadoes on Birth Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Despite emerging evidence of the detrimental effects of natural disasters on maternal and child health, little is known about exposure to tornadoes during the prenatal period and its impact on birth outcomes. We examined the relationship between prenatal exposure to the spring 2011 tornado outbreak in Alabama and Joplin (Missouri) and adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional cohort study using the 2010-2012 linked infant births and deaths data set from the National Center for Health Statistics for tornado-affected counties in Alabama (n=126,453

Potential ecological distribution of Cytauxzoon felis in domestic cats in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas.

The ecological distribution of Cytauxzoon felis, an often-fatal tick-borne apicomplexan that infects domestic cats, has not been evaluated or identified despite its continued emergence. Infection of C. felis is characterized by lethargy, icterus, fever, anorexia, anemia, and death. The natural vertebrate reservoir of C. felis is the bobcat (Lynx rufus). To determine the possible distribution of C. felis in three states where infection is common (Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas), two separate approaches to ecological niche modeling were implemented. First, a model relating several different cl

Clinical recognition and management of tularemia in Missouri: a retrospective records review of 121 cases.

BACKGROUND: Clinical recognition of tularemia is essential for prompt initiation of appropriate antibiotic treatment. Although fluoroquinolones have desirable attributes as a treatment option, limited data on efficacy in the US setting exist. METHODS: To define the epidemiology of tularemia in Missouri, and to evaluate practices and outcomes of tularemia management in general, we conducted a detailed retrospective review and analysis of clinical records for patients reported to the state from 2000 to 2007. RESULTS: We reviewed records of 121 of 190 patients (64%) reported with tularemia; 79

Seasonal variation in the bacterial microbiome of questing nymphal ticks in Missouri, United States.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal environmental variation may influence the composition of tick-associated bacterial communities. This study assessed seasonal differences in the microbiome of questing nymphal ticks collected from Missouri, United States. METHODS: Questing ticks were collected during early and late seasonal periods at a livestock-associated site in central Missouri. To minimize confounding by developmental stage, microbiome analyses were restricted to nymphal ticks. Bacterial communities were characterized using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Alpha diversity (richness, Shannon, and Simpson indi

Echinococcosis (hydatid disease) in Missouri: diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration of a lung cyst.

Echinococcus granulosus was diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology of a lung cyst in a 6-yr-old white female in central Missouri. No adverse reaction occurred following the aspiration. The cytologic sample yielded clear fluid containing numerous clearly identifiable protoscoleces diagnostic for echinococcosis using routine PAP staining. Since hydatid disease is extremely uncommon in the Midwest, it had not initially been considered in the differential diagnosis. The infection was probably not indigenous to Missouri, since the patient lived the first 3 1/2 yr of life in Alaska, where the

Perinatal deaths in twin pregnancy. A five-year analysis of statewide statistics in Missouri.

Analysis of computer-stored State of Missouri birth and death records over a 5 year period revealed 3,594 twin pregnancies (1.02% of all pregnancies), which accounted for 10.1% of the perinatal deaths. The mean birth weight according to weeks of gestation was computed for the pregnancies with no complications noted prior to labor and the perinatal mortality rate was determined. Complications of pregnancy were evaluated. Low birth weight appears to be the major factor in the elevated perinatal death rate in twin pregnancy, with a significant elevation of the perinatal death rate noted with labo

Leprosy in Missouri, USA: Are Armadillos (Dasypus mexicanus) Carrying the Causative Agent Mycobacterium leprae?

The Mexican long-nosed nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus mexicanus) has continued to expand its range since it was first documented in Texas, US, in the mid-1800s. It dispersed north and east and was found in Missouri, USA, starting in the 1980s. This species is known to contract leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Infected armadillos are considered to be a zoonotic source of leprosy in the US. A recent case (2021) of leprosy in a native Missourian who had a history of contacts with armadillos appears to have been locally acquired. However, no data were availa

Population-level predictors of sexually transmitted infection rate changes in Missouri: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection rates continue to increase across the US, further developing health disparities and economic burdens of disease, especially as migration occurs. In this study, we aim to assess the relationship between STI rates and population-level variables from 2008 to 2017 at the county level in Missouri. METHODS: Two data sources were used: STI rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV reported to Missouri DHSS and ACS 1-year county population estimates. Linear regression models and ANOVA tests were conducted in SPSS for each STI from year-to-year and 2008-20

Contaminant levels in rainbow trout, oncorhynchus mykiss, and their diets from Missouri coldwater hatcheries.

Organochlorine and metal contaminants often occur in commercial fish diets and can accumulate in fish to levels of concern for human consumption. Contaminant levels were investigated in diet and rainbow trout fillets from Missouri coldwater hatcheries used in "put and take" fisheries. The average fillet:diet ratio was <0.1 for lead and cadmium, 0.4-0.6 for organochlorine compounds, and about 0.8 for mercury. Trout fillet concentrations for all contaminants were low (<50 ng/g) and below Missouri's fish consumption advisory trigger levels.

Accumulation of metals in fish from lead-zinc mining areas of southeastern Missouri, USA.

The potential effects of proposed lead-zinc mining in an ecologically sensitive area were assessed by studying a nearby mining district that has been exploited for about 30 yr under contemporary environmental regulations and with modern technology. Blood and liver samples representing fish of three species (largescale stoneroller, Campostoma oligolepis, n=91; longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis, n=105; and northern hog sucker, Hypentelium nigricans, n=20) were collected from 16 sites representing a range of conditions relative to lead-zinc mining and ore beneficiation in southeastern Missouri.

Missouri naloxone distribution 2017-2023: Evaluation and implications of applying a naloxone saturation model.

INTRODUCTION: Overdose deaths have increased sharply in the past five years. States have implemented overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) initiatives to mitigate overdose deaths at a population level. Irvine et al. (2022) proposed a model to estimate amounts of naloxone needed to meaningfully reduce opioid overdose mortality (defined as naloxone saturation) by distributing it through: 1) community-based, 2) pharmacy-initiated, and 3) provider-based access points. In the most recent rounds of State Opioid Response grant applications, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Perinatal periods of risk: analysis of fetal-infant mortality rates in Kansas City, Missouri.

OBJECTIVES: The Perinatal Periods of Risk (PPOR) technique was used to analyze resident fetal and infant death data from Kansas City, Missouri, for the period 1998-2002. Results offer important information that can be used to develop community-based prevention strategies related to racial/ethnic disparities in infant mortality rates (IMR). METHODS: The PPOR approach for fetal and infant mortality can be mapped by birthweight at delivery and time of death into four strategic prevention areas: 1) Maternal Health/Prematurity (MHP), 2) Maternal Care (MC), 3) Newborn Care (NC), and 4) Infant Healt

Rural Cardiovascular Health in Missouri: Needs, Care Gaps, and Resources for a More Connected System.

Missouri's rural health needs are inseparable from cardiovascular health. Nearly one-quarter of Missourians live in nonmetro areas, where rural hospitals, clinics, community health centers, emergency medical services agencies, public health departments, and community organizations anchor care. Yet heart disease is the leading cause of death in Missouri; the 20 counties with the highest heart disease death rates are rural; and recent data show higher rural heart disease and stroke mortality than urban Missouri. Cardiovascular risk is shaped by clinical care, primary care access, transportation,
