In vitro efficacy of ByeMite and Mite-Stop on developmental stages of the red chicken mite Dermanyssus gallinae.

The present in vitro study shows the efficacy of two antimite products (ByeMite = phoxim, Mite-Stop = neem seed extract) against all developing stages of the important red chicken mite Dermanyssus gallinae (obtained at two farms in France and Germany). While permanent contact with the active compound led to an efficacy of 100% in the case of Mite-Stop on mites in both farms, there was only a 96.2% killing effect of ByeMite on the mites of the French farm. Even short contacts of only 4 s killed 100% of mites in the case of Mite-Stop at the French farm and only 84.5% in the German farm. ByeMite,

First ex vivo cultivation of human Demodex mites and evaluation of different drugs on mite proliferation.

BACKGROUND: Demodex spp. mites are the most complex resident of the human skin microbiome. Although they are considered commensals, they can be pathophysiologically relevant in inflammatory skin diseases like rosacea. Until now, there is no culture system available for these mites except for using live vertebrate hosts. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to establish an ex vivo culture of human Demodex mites and to characterize the sebogenesis-dependent mite density. METHODS: Demodex mites were cultivated in pilosebaceous units of human skin explants, called human organotypic skin explant culture (hOSE

Mite asthma in childhood: a study of the relationship between exposure to house dust mites and disease activity.

BACKGROUND: Children with asthma are commonly sensitized to the house dust mite. METHODS: We took monthly measurements from July to December of the amount of mites in the mattresses of asthmatic children and correlated them with symptom score, pulmonary function, and airway hyperreactivity to methacholine. RESULTS: In spite of the high number of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus throughout this period, symptom and treatment scores, as well as PC20 to methacholine, worsened during the months of September and October. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that when asthmatic children allergic to mites ar

Cross-antigenicity between the scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, and the house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus.

This study demonstrated that antigens of the parasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei (SS) cross-react with antigens of the house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP). Crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) reaction of SS extract with rabbit anti-DP serum resulted in multiple immunoprecipitates. Reciprocal CIE reactions gave similar results. Immunoprecipitates from both reactions bound IgE in the sera of dust-mite-sensitive patients who had no history of scabies. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis resolved protein/peptide bands of both SS and DP also bound serum IgE from d

Mites and ticks of reptiles and amphibians in Brazil.

This study focuses on the parasitic associations of mites and ticks infesting reptiles and amphibians through a multifocal approach. Herein, reptiles (n= 3,596) and amphibians (n= 919) were examined to ensure representativeness of the Brazilian herpetofauna megadiversity. The overall prevalence was calculated to better understand which were the preferred hosts for each order of Acari (Trombidiformes, Mesostigmata and Ixodida), as well as to determine which orders frequently parasitize reptiles and amphibians in Brazil, and their host specificity. Infestation rates were calculated [prevalence,

Nasal mites (Mesostigmata: Rhinonyssidae) in African penguins (Spheniscus demersus).

Rhinonyssids are obligate haematophagous mites that parasitize the nasal cavity of vertebrates, and occur in a wide range of birds worldwide. Two species of nasal mites are known to occur in penguins: Rhinonyssus sphenisci, which has been recorded from Humboldt and Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus humboldti and S. magellanicus, respectively), and Rhinonyssus schelli, which has been recorded in Adélie and Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae and P. papua, respectively). We examined the nasal cavity of African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) that died while under care at a rehabilitation centre (N

Arabidopsis Kunitz Trypsin Inhibitors in Defense Against Spider Mites.

Tetranychus urticae (two-spotted spider mite) is a striking example of polyphagy among herbivores with an extreme record of pesticide resistance and one of the most significant pests in agriculture. The T. urticae genome contains a large number of cysteine- and serine-proteases indicating their importance in the spider mite physiology. This work is focused on the potential role of the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) family on plant defense responses against spider mites. The molecular characterization of two of these genes, AtKTI4 and AtKTI5, combined with feeding bioassays using T-DNA insertio

A synthetic review of notoedres species mites and mange.

Notoedric mange, caused by obligately parasitic sarcoptiform Notoedres mites, is associated with potentially fatal dermatitis with secondary systemic disease in small mammals, felids and procyonids among others, as well as an occasional zoonosis. We describe clinical spectra in non-chiropteran hosts, review risk factors and summarize ecological and epidemiological studies. The genus is disproportionately represented on rodents. Disease in felids and procyonids ranges from very mild to death. Knowledge of the geographical distribution of the mites is highly inadequate, with focal hot spots know

New Wolbachia supergroups detected in quill mites (Acari: Syringophilidae).

Wolbachia is the most abundant intracellular bacterial genus infecting a wide range of arthropods and filarial nematodes. Wolbachia have evolved parasitic, mutualistic and commensal relationships with their hosts but in arthropods generally act as reproductive parasites, inducing a wide range of phenotypic effects such as cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis, feminization and male-killing. Up to now, the genus has been divided into 14 supergroups successively named A-O. Here, we describe two new Wolbachia supergroups from syringophilid mites (Acari: Cheyletoidea). These obligatory ecto

Allergic sensitization to domestic mites in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Corpus Christi, TX, is a Gulf Coast city with high humidity levels year-round. There is little available data on mite species in mattress dust, allergen levels, and sensitization to different mite species in allergic patients. This study was designed to determine skin sensitization and specific serum IgE to Dermatophagoides spp. and Blomia tropicalis in patients attending an allergy clinic and to explore the mite fauna and allergen content of their mattresses. Skin-prick tests to Dermatophagoides spp. and B. tropicalis along with mite-specific IgE in the serum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent as

[Olfactory alterations in allergic rhinitis to pollens and mites].

INTRODUCTION: In the last 80 years, the presence of allergies has increased among Europeans from 0.28% to 14.2%. Allergic rhinitis is the main presentation, rising from 18% to 40% of cases. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that allergic rhinitis due to pollen and mites has an effect on the olfactory system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe the impairment of olfactory function in two groups of individuals with allergic rhinitis due to mites or pollen (n = 76; 42 with allergy to pollen [48.9%], and 34 with allergy to mites [39%]), compared with a group of healthy volunteers (n = 120). [Mites, lice and fleas. Ectoparasitoses in infancy and childhood].

Ectoparasitoses or epizoonoses are skin disorders caused by animal parasites living on the body surface. Worldwide they are among the most frequent dermatoses, particularly in infancy and childhood. Distinguishing between conditions caused by permanent and temporary ectoparasites is important for the course and the required therapy. Permanent ectoparasites, such as scabies mite and head louse, spend all their life in or on the skin and have to be killed on the patient with suitable acaricides or pediculicides. In contrast, temporary ectoparasites, as animal mites or fleas, attack humans only f

[Grain mites. A small epidemic caused by Pyemotes species].

Pyemotes mites, of which the grain itch mite is the most important for human medicine, are ectoparasites of many insect species. Human infestation occurs only accidentally and temporally. The source materials are most often grain, straw and plant-based foods. Bites produce an intensely itching urticarial wheal capped by pin-point vesicles, which often are destroyed by scratching. Pyemotes dermatitis favours the back, the abdomen and the flexor side of the forearms. The mites are barely visible to the naked eye and reside only briefly on humans and thus are not found by physicians during clinic

Anaphylaxis after ingestion of wheat flour contaminated with mites.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis after ingestion of flours contaminated with mites has been recently reported. OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to determine whether four-induced reactions in the absence of food sensitivity may result from mite contamination. METHODS: Patients with systemic reactions after ingestion of foods containing wheat flour and without food sensitivities were included in a prospective study. The flours were examined microscopically, and major Dermatophagoides allergens were quantified by monoclonal antibody techniques. Skin prick tests and IgE determinations to mites and flour

Sensitization to domestic mites in a cold temperate region.

Factors favoring sensitization to house dust mites (HDM) were studied in a cold, temperate climate in northern Sweden. Sixty-five children previously found to react positively to a skin prick test (SPT) to HDM were included. The SPT to HDM was repeated, and serum IgE antibodies to D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae were determined. HDM, Euroglyphus maynei, Tarsonemus, or storage mites occurred in mattress dust samples from 23 of the 65 homes, and in 10 homes more than 100 HDM/g of mattress dust were found. Mites were more prevalent in mattress dust from the basement and ground levels than from th

[The origin of parasitism in trombiculid mites (Acariformes: Trombiculidae)].

On the basis of literary data and original investigations some phylogenetic, ecological and morphological aspects of the origin of parasitism in trombiculid mites are carefully considered for the first time. It is shown that parasitism in this group of trombidiform mites is a relatively young historical phenomenon and was formed after their ontogenesis had differentiated into active and quiescent stages. Therefore, in the life pattern of trombiculid mites the character of individual development, that defines their biotopical restriction, is much more important than the phase parasitism. Primit

Sensitization to house dust mites in different climatic areas.

With the use of local meteorologic data, the mean monthly indoor relative humidity (RH) was calculated for the area of residence of each of 774 children with respiratory symptoms who were referred to our allergy clinic. Seven hundred fourteen children lived in areas in which the mean indoor RH was 50% or more for 4 or more mo per year ("humid" areas), and 60 children lived where this RH was present for no more than 2 mo per year ("dry" areas). Of those children from the "humid" areas, the skin prick test was positive to Dermatophagoides farinae in 31% and D. pteronyssinus in 40%, whereas in th

'Barn allergy': asthma and rhinitis due to storage mites.

The differential diagnosis of asthma in farm workers is between a type I hypersensitivity to a pollen or dust allergen and a type III hypersensitivity to mould antigens. We describe asthma and rhinitis, and not farmer's lung, in a farming population due to the non-pyroglyphid grain storage mite. Before a diagnosis of farmers' lung due to mouldy hay is made in any patient whether or not precipitins to Micropolyspora faeni are present, skin tests for storage mite should be made. If these are positive a diagnosis of 'barn allergy' should be considered and a trial of sodium cromoglycate be given.

Bronchial provocation studies in farmers allergic to storage mites.

In an investigation of the relationship between storage mites and symptoms of allergic respiratory disease in farmers exposed to hay and grain dust, the clinical responses suggested an immediate type-I hypersensitivity. This study confirmed that farmers are exposed to large numbers of mites, particularly while feeding cattle. Storage mites may be an important cause of asthma in the farming community and should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of farmers lung.

Unilateral Papulopustular Dermatosis: Demodex Mites Bridging Rosacea and Demodicosis.

Papulopustular rosacea (PPR) is a common inflammatory dermatosis often associated with Demodex mite proliferation, though its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. While bilateral presentations predominate, unilateral cases are rare and may offer unique insights into disease mechanisms. We report a case of a 68-year-old female with a chronic erythematous and scaly rash confined to the right malar region. Standardized skin surface biopsy revealed a high Demodex density (>5 mites/cm²), confirming demodicosis. Treatment with topical ivermectin cream resulted in significant improvement wit
