The rapidly increasing elderly population poses a major challenge for future health-care systems. Neurological diseases in older persons are particularly common and coexist with other clinical conditions. This is not surprising given that, for example, even patients with Alzheimer Disease (AD) could have relevant extrapyramidal signs at the moment of the diagnosis with motor signs having more negative prognostic value. Longitudinal studies conducted on Parkinson Disease (PD) showed that, after 20 years, dementia is not only present in almost all survivors but is also the main factor influencin

Pain in the paretic upper limb is a common complaint in the post-stroke patients. It usually affects shoulder joint and, less frequently, wrist and hand. Pain is usually accompanied by limited mobility of the shoulder and sometimes by swelling of the hand and wrist. The aetiology of these complaints remains unclear. The objective of the study was to evaluate the incidence of pain, limited mobility, swelling and other signs that appear in the paretic limb within the first year after stroke. Forty-five stroke patients treated in the Department of Neurology in 2000 who answered the questionnaire

Limited joint mobility in the hand is a common manifestation of diabetes with the reported prevalence in insulin-dependent diabetes varying between 8 and 43%. Sixty-two subjects were studied in three groups (controls, diabetic patients without foot problems, and diabetic patients with neuropathic ulceration) to determine whether similar changes occur in the joints of the foot and to examine any possible relationship with neuropathic ulceration. There was a significant impairment of mobility in the range of motion of the sub-talar joint in diabetic patients with ulcers when compared with contro

The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases increases with age. Common symptoms such as dyspnea, chest pain, dizziness, or syncope can impact driving fitness. Due to a growing number of private drivers aged 65 and older and an increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, questions regarding driving fitness restrictions for cardiological patients are gaining prominence in clinical settings. This article aims to summarize current recommendations for driving fitness in the context of cardiovascular diseases. The basis for the guidelines includes the Driving License Ordinance, the expert assess

BACKGROUND: The identification of novel rehabilitative impairments that are risk factors for mobility limitations may improve their prevention and treatment among older adults. We tested the hypothesis that impaired rhythmic interlimb ankle and shoulder coordination are risk factors for subsequent mobility limitations among older adults.
METHODS: We conducted a 1-year prospective cohort study of community-dwelling older adults (N = 99) aged 67 years and older who did not have mobility limitations (Short Physical Performance Battery score > 9) at baseline. Participants performed antiphase coor

This study represents an effort to contribute to the limited body of research on biopsychosocial contextual factors that influence or contribute to mobility limitations for older African American men. Specifically, we were interested in examining associations between socio-demographic, physical and emotional health experiences with mobility limitations. A secondary analysis of 1666 older African American men was performed to investigate socio-demographic, mental and physical health correlates to a specific measures of mobility limitation. In the final model, difficulty with self-care, severe p

Aging is associated with a progressive loss of bone-muscle mass and strength. When the decline in mass and strength reaches critical thresholds associated with adverse health outcomes, they are operationally considered geriatric conditions and named, respectively, osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Osteoporosis and sarcopenia share many of the same risk factors and both directly or indirectly cause higher risk of mobility limitations, falls, fractures and disability in activities of daily living. This is not surprising since bones adapt their morphology and strength to the long-term loads exerted by

CONTEXT: The discovery of limited joint mobility (LJM) as the earliest clinically apparent complication of diabetes in children and adolescents nearly 40 years ago provided insights into the mechanism of diabetes complications.
RESULTS: LJM, due to periarticular connective tissue thickening and stiffness, varied from single joint involvement bilaterally to obvious hand deformity and limitation of movement of the spine. Thick, tight, waxy skin was apparent with more severe changes; biopsy indicated thickening of the dermis and epidermis with accumulation of collagen and loss of skin appendages

PURPOSE: To examine the extent of mobility limitations in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, or Fuchs' corneal dystrophy compared with that in a control group of older adults with good vision.
METHODS: Two hundred seventy-two patients (68 with AMD, 49 with Fuchs' dystrophy, 82 with glaucoma, and 73 controls) from the ophthalmology clinics of Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital (Montreal, Canada) participated in a cross-sectional study from September 2009 until February 2011. Control patients who had normal visual acuity and visual fields were recruited from the same cli

Limited joint mobility is a relatively recent addition to the list of other well known rheumatic disorders that may be associated with diabetes mellitus. In our study of 109 patients with diabetes, a higher prevalence of Dupuytren's contracture was found compared to nondiabetic subjects, but the difference was not statistically significant (p less than 0.1). An association between limited joint mobility and Dupuytren's contracture was shown. Patients with diabetes with Dupuytren's contracture showed no difference compared to those without Dupuytren's contracture with regard to sex, insulin dos

Limited joint mobility (LJM) has been described in juvenile diabetic patients by Rosenbloom et al.; similar abnormalities are also present in adult diabetes. This modification may be associated with a high risk of microvascular complications. We tested the use of a goniometer in measuring subclinical joint limitation in 50 adult diabetic patients without overt, i.e., clinically evident, LJM as described by these authors. This diabetic population was compared with 118 nondiabetic adult controls. We found significant changes in hand mobility between the two groups for wrist flexion and extension

OBJECTIVES: Current guidelines for preclinical mobility limitation (PCML) screening recommend habitual and fast gait speed testing; however, comparative evidence on their discriminative accuracy is limited, and empirical gait speed thresholds for PCML have not been established. We aimed to (i) compare habitual and fast gait speed on their discriminative ability and (ii) derive interpretation thresholds for PCML among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults.
DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, 235 participants (mean[SD], 68[7.3]years) completed the 4-metre gait speed assessment. PCM

The aim of the present study was to compare the neuromuscular, morphological, and functional responses to a high-velocity resistance training (HVRT) program between three cohorts: middle-aged adults (40-55 years, n = 18), healthy older adults (> 60 years, n = 18), and mobility-limited older adults (n = 8). Participants were tested before and after a 4-week control period and then assigned to a 12-week HVRT intervention. Investigated outcomes included ultrasound-derived muscle thickness and quality, maximal dynamic strength (1RM), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), and muscle activ

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between leisure-time physical activity (PA) and survival to age 85 with mobility limitation or death before age 85 after total knee (TKR) or total hip replacement (THR) for osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: This was a prospective study among participants from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), recruited 1993-1998 (baseline age 65-79 yrs) and followed through 2012. Medicare claims data were linked to WHI data to determine TKR (n = 1986) and THR (n = 1034). Self-reported PA was collected before total joint replacement (TJR).
RESULTS: Women who were physicall

AIM: To examine gender differences in regards to the disagreement between walking speed and self-reported mobility limitations, and, furthermore, to explore the items that affect each physical function task by comparing slow walking speed and self-reported mobility limitation in community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: The subjects consisted of 1381 community-dwelling men and women aged 65-84 years who were classified into four categories according to a combination of mobility status measured by a slow walking speed (usual gait speed < 1.0 m/s) and self-reported mobility limitation (difficul

Although difficulties with neck mobility often interfere with patients' activities of daily living (ADL) after cervical laminoplasty, there was no detailed study on the relation between the limitations of ADL accompanying postoperative reduced neck mobility and the cervical posterior approach. The aim of this study was to compare retrospectively the frequency of limitations of ADL accompanying neck mobility after laminoplasty preserving the semispinalis cervicis inserted into the C2 spinous process with that after laminoplasty reattaching the muscle to C2. Forty-nine patients after C4-C7 lamin

BACKGROUND: Mobility limitation is an important public health challenge faced by ageing populations. However, standardized assessment tools remain lacking in primary care practice in China, and existing predictive models still face substantial implementation gaps in clinical translation. This qualitative study aimed to explore frontline primary healthcare professionals' perceptions of current assessment practices and to provide recommendations for optimizing and clinically translating related predictive models.
METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in January 2026 among 15 fr
