BACKGROUND: Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) are a group of diseases with high clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Clinical examinations combined with Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and whole exome sequencing (WES) were performed to reveal the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics in a cohort of Chinese CCDDs patients.
RESULTS: A total of 122 CCDDs patients from 96 families were enrolled. All patients showed restrictive eye movements, and 46 patients from 46 families (47.9%, 46/96) were accompanied by multiple congenital malformations. Multi-positional high-resolution

We report a boy with severe congenital myopathy, Möbius-Poland sequence, Robin sequence, and severe developmental delay. We consider this patient to have Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome. Since this is only the seventh case reported, this case helps to define further the consistent manifestations of this recognizable phenotype. Additionally our patient shows laryngostenosis, intermittent episodes of high blood pressure and Poland sequence as important clinical symptoms.

Humans rely heavily on facial expressions for social communication to convey their thoughts and emotions and to understand them in others. One prominent but controversial view is that humans learn to recognize the significance of facial expressions by mimicking the expressions of others. This view predicts that an inability to make facial expressions (e.g., facial paralysis) would result in reduced perceptual sensitivity to others' facial expressions. To test this hypothesis, we developed a diverse battery of sensitive emotion recognition tasks to characterize expression perception in individu

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by non-progressive palsy of the abducens (VI) and facial (VII) cranial nerves. Its common features include dysfunctions associated with other cranial nerves, orofacial abnormalities, skeletal muscle hypotonia, and other systemic disorders of differing severities. There are several concerns in the perioperative management of patients with Moebius syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a report on the management of general anesthesia of a 14-year-old male patient with Moebius syndrome who was scheduled for mandibular cyst

This focus group study examined the social experiences of 10 adolescents aged 12-17 years with Moebius Syndrome, a rare condition involving congenital facial paralysis. Content analysis revealed five themes: social engagement/disengagement, resilience/sensitivity, social support/stigma, being understood/misunderstood, and public awareness/lack of awareness of Moebius Syndrome. Compared to previous research on adults with Moebius Syndrome, adolescents were more likely to experience bullying and social strain. Like adults, teenagers displayed resilience and communication skills. Greater public a

BACKGROUND: Although neuroradiological findings of Möbius syndrome have been reported as a result of brain and brainstem abnormalities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) now permits the direct imaging of the cranial nerve (CN) and branches in the orbits. This study presents the MRI findings in patients with sporadic Möbius syndrome.
METHODS: Prospectively, CNs were imaged in the cistern using head coils and three dimensional fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (3D-FIESTA), yielding a 0.5 mm(2) resolution in planes of 0.8 mm thickness in seven patients with sporadic Möbius syndrome.

Möbius syndrome is a congenital disorder of facial diplegia associated with lateral gaze paralysis. Although palsy of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves is the minimum diagnostic finding for Möbius syndrome, neuropathologic evidence indicates that this is a more complex syndrome.(1) Clinically, it is characterized by a total absence of facial expression and severe esotropia. Other anomalies may be associated with this syndrome, especially other cranial nerve palsies and Poland syndrome. The etiology of this syndrome has not been clearly established. Brain stem necrosis resulting from a vascu

This report presents a severe case of Poland-Möbius syndrome with central apnea at birth, ventilator-dependent, and with brainstem calcifications. The newborn had unilateral defect of the right pectoralis muscle, breast, and limb. He manifested bilateral paralysis of the cranial nerves resulting in shallow respiration, apnea, and dysphagia. He finally required tracheostomy and gastrostomy. Maternal history revealed multiple uses of cocaine during the first 3 months of pregnancy. The patient supports the Poland-Möbius combination and the possibility of vascular disruption sequence.

Moebius syndrome is a rare nonprogressive congenital neurological disorder with a wide range of severity and variability of symptoms. This diversity is a consequence of dysfunction of different cranial nerves (most often facial and abducens nerves), accompanying orofacial abnormalities, musculoskeletal malformations, congenital cardiac diseases, as well as specific associations of Moebius and other syndromes. The authors present anesthesia and airway management during the multiple tooth extraction surgery in a 10-year-old girl with Moebius syndrome associated with Poland and trigeminal trophic

INTRODUCTION: Moebius syndrome is a rare disease characterized by unilateral or bilateral congenital nonprogressive facial nerve palsy along with limitation of ocular abductions. Vertical Rectus Transpositions with posterior fixation suture is known to correct abduction deficiencies in case of Moebius syndrome. Traditionally both superior and inferior rectus transposition are done to prevent any post operative vertical imbalance. The purpose of reporting this case is to evaluate superior rectus transposition augmented with posterior fixation suture along with bilateral recession of medial rect

This article puts into perspective the controversy between the association of the use of misoprostol for abortion and teratogenicity studies of the type found in a case report. The use of herbal medicinal drugs and the medical-obstetric and national and international norms governing the registration and circulation of pharmaceutical products were examined. Official documents of ANVISA, the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization on the use of misoprostol, as well as 68 articles such as case reports published in national journals, linking abortion, misoprostol and teratogenicity we

Möbius syndrome (OMIM#157900) is an extremely rare congenital entity involving bilateral or unilateral palsy of the facial nerve, usually with dysfunction of other cranial nerves (second, third, fifth, sixth, ninth, tenth and twelfth). It was estimated that Möbius syndrome occurs in 1 of 50 000 live births. The aetiology and the pathogenesis of the syndrome remain unknown. The majority of published cases were sporadic. We report on the natural history of a 32-year-old man with de novo Möbius syndrome. The diagnosis was established at the age of 9 months due to partial bilateral facial and abdu

Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by bilateral facial nerve palsy and abducens nerve palsy. It is associated with a wide spectrum of systemic and ocular manifestations; esotropia is commonly the reason for ophthalmic referral. There are few published studies in the literature on strabismus surgery in Möbius syndrome. An augmented vertical rectus muscle transposition in which lateral fixation sutures are used on the transposed vertical rectus muscles (Foster augmentation) has been used to correct esotropia caused by severe sixth nerve palsy and type 1 Duane syndrome. The diagnostic criteria of Asperger's syndrome (AS), considered a part of the autistic spectrum disorder, are still unclear. A critical marker, which distinguishes AS from autism, is the presence of language. The ability of a child with AS to acquire and use language early results in the fact that AS usually is diagnosed much later than autism. Autism is not usually diagnosed until around the age of 3, whereas AS usually is not diagnosed until the child is 6 or 7 years of age. In the present article, using Eshkol-Wachman movement notation, we present evidence that abnormal movement patterns ca

Moebius syndrome is a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder (CCDD) that presents with nonprogressive cranial nerve (CN) VI and VII palsies resulting in facial weakness and inability to abduct the eye(s). While many CCDDs have an underlying genetic cause, the etiology of Moebius syndrome remains unclear as most cases are sporadic. Here, we describe a pair of monochorionic, diamniotic twin girls; one with normal growth and development, and one with micrognathia, reduced facial expression, and poor feeding. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain performed on the affected twin at 19 months o

Möbius syndrome is a neurological disorder involving underdevelopment of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves. Multiple associations have been described including dysfunction of other cranial nerves, limb abnormalities and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism causing delayed puberty. We present the second reported case of Möbius syndrome associated with obesity and with precocious puberty. These features may be secondary to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. We highlight the need to consider extraocular symptoms in these patients and for close liaison with physicians in their manageme
