Development and characterization of a novel, anatomically relevant rat model of acute postoperative pain.

UNLABELLED: Acute postoperative pain remains a significant health care issue. Development of anatomically relevant animal models of postoperative pain, with improved predictive validity, would advance understanding of postoperative pain mechanisms and improve treatment outcomes. This study aimed to develop, characterize, and validate a rat model of acute postoperative pain associated with inguinal hernia repair based on the Lichtenstein inguinal hernia repair procedure (without hernia induction). We hypothesized that the surgery would result in reduced spontaneous locomotor activity, which wou

The Parametric Model of the Human Mandible Coronoid Process Created by Method of Anatomical Features.

Geometrically accurate and anatomically correct 3D models of the human bones are of great importance for medical research and practice in orthopedics and surgery. These geometrical models can be created by the use of techniques which can be based on input geometrical data acquired from volumetric methods of scanning (e.g., Computed Tomography (CT)) or on the 2D images (e.g., X-ray). Geometrical models of human bones created in such way can be applied for education of medical practitioners, preoperative planning, etc. In cases when geometrical data about the human bone is incomplete (e.g., frac

[Anatomic correction of transposition of the great arteries: a model of surgical "cure" in pediatric cardiology?].

Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a common congenital heart malformation, involving inversion of the two great vessels (aorta and pulmonary artery). Without surgical treatment, TGA is not compatible with life. The prognosis of this malformation has been dramatically changed by the development of neonatal cardiac surgery. "Anatomic" repair was introduced in the 1980s, with the goal of providing near-normal cardiac anatomy. It is carried out in neonates with isolated TGA (so-called simple TGA), as well as in those with associated anomalies (ventricular septal defect, aortic coarctatio

Total pancreatectomy: porcine model for inducing diabetes - anatomical assessment and surgical aspects.

BACKGROUND: The swine is an essential model for carrying out preclinical research and for teaching complex surgical procedures. There is a lack of experimental models describing anatomical and surgical aspects of total pancreatectomy in the pig. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiments were performed on 10 white male swine weighing 27-33 kg. The animals were premedicated with midazolam (0.4 mg/kg, i.m.) and ketamine (4 mg/kg, i.m.). Anesthesia was induced with propofol (1-2 mg/kg, i.v.) and was maintained with propofol and fentanyl (0.3 mg and 0.1 μg/kg/min, respectively, i.v.). The surgical pe

Spared nerve injury model of neuropathic pain in the mouse: a behavioral and anatomic analysis.

Mouse genetics has contributed significantly to our understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying tissue and nerve injury-induced persistent pain. To create a highly reproducible, relatively noninvasive model of neuropathic pain in the mouse, we examined the behavioral consequences of sparing each of the 3 distal branches of the sciatic nerve in wild-type mice after a model originally described in the rat. Sparing the tibial branch but sparing neither of the other branches produced robust mechanical allodynia while leaving heat sensibility intact. To assess the topographic organization of t

A physiological barrier distal to the anatomic blood-brain barrier in a model of transvascular delivery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Osmotic disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) provides a method for transvascular delivery of therapeutic agents to the brain. The apparent global delivery of viral-sized iron oxide particles to the rat brain after BBB opening as seen on MR images was compared with the cellular and subcellular location and distribution of the particles. METHODS: Two dextran-coated superparamagnetic monocrystalline iron oxide nanoparticle contrast agents, MION and Feridex, were administered intraarterially in rats at 10 mg Fe/kg immediately after osmotic opening of the BBB with hy

Influence of anatomic location on prognosis of malignant melanoma: attempt to verify the BANS model.

Stage I cutaneous malignant melanomas between 0.76 and 1.69 mm thick (Breslow measurement) in BANS (upper part of the back, posterior aspects of the arms, posterior and lateral aspects of the neck, posterior aspect of the scalp) areas have been reported to portend a relatively poor prognosis compared to non-BANS sites. We were unable to confirm the 15% poorer survival for BANS area lesions (84% BANS, 99% non-BANS) originally reported. In this report of 211 patients, malignant melanomas in BANS sites had a 4.6% poorer 5-year cumulative survival rate (88.9% BANS, 93.5% non-BANS; p = 0.35). Altho

The cynomolgus monkey as a model for orbital research. II. Anatomic effects of lateral orbitotomy.

In order to assess the anatomic consequences of lateral orbitotomy in a disease-free muscle cone, a technique of microsurgical exposure of the ciliary ganglion in the cynomolgus monkey was formulated. Animals were sacrificed at 2 and 6 months following surgery, and microscopic sections of the whole orbit prepared and compared to sections taken from the non-operated contralateral orbits. Findings at two months were: periorbital thickening and hypercellularity along with osteoneogenesis at sites remote from the surgery, particularly the superior-lateral orbit, and lack of appreciable scar format

DeMorph: A Decoupled Deformation Model with Anatomical Guidance for Predicting Longitudinal Brain Atrophy.

Modeling the longitudinal progression of brain atrophy in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is critical for early diagnosis and prognosis, but remains challenging for existing generative models. Current methods either fail to preserve anatomical integrity or treat progression as an entangled process, where changes from normal aging are inseparably fused with AD pathology. This fundamentally limits their scientific utility. To address this, we propose DeMorph, a novel deformation-based framework that explicitly disentangles and accurately predicts longitudinal brain MRI changes. Our transformer-based ar

A new system for custom helical mandibular distraction: a bench study on anatomical models.

Current mandibular distraction osteogenesis relies on stock or hybrid devices, which can only execute rectilinear or in-plane circular movements. This bench feasibility study evaluated the accuracy of a novel patient-specific helical distractor compared with commonly used rectilinear and hybrid rectilinear devices. Retrospective data from four patients with severe mandibular deformities were utilized. Computer-assisted surgical simulation software was employed to plan ideal distraction paths for each rectilinear and helical case. Three distractors-custom helical, hybrid, and stock-were fabrica

UNSX-HRNet: Modeling anatomical uncertainty for landmark detection in total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Accurate detection of anatomical landmarks from radiographic images is critical for total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgical planning and postoperative evaluation. However, existing methods face significant challenges in unstructured data, such as irregular patient postures or occluded landmarks, which hinder their robustness and reliability. This study aims to develop an advanced deep learning framework to address these challenges, by leveraging uncertainty estimation to handle unstructured data and assigning uncertainty scores to predicted landmarks, thereby alerting clinicians to f

The Course of the Trochlear Nerve Presented via a 3-Dimensional Photorealistic Anatomic Model.

OBJECTIVES: Several factors contribute to the anatomical complexity of the trochlear nerve, including small diameter, complex and longest intracranial course, deep location, and numerous neurovascular relationships. A 3-dimensional (3D) photorealistic model of the cranial nerves provides a detailed and immersive representation of the anatomy, enabling one to improve surgical planning, advanced surgical research, and training. The purpose of this work is to present a 3D photogrammetric study for a more intuitive and interactive way to explore and describe the entire course of trochlear nerve.

Exploring CT pixel and voxel size effect on anatomic modeling in mandibular reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Computer-aided modeling and design (CAM/CAD) of patient anatomy from computed tomography (CT) imaging and 3D printing technology enable the creation of tangible, patient-specific anatomic models that can be used for surgical guidance. These models have been associated with better patient outcomes; however, a lack of CT imaging guidelines risks the capture of unsuitable imaging for patient-specific modeling. This study aims to investigate how CT image pixel size (X-Y) and slice thickness (Z) impact the accuracy of mandibular models. METHODS: Six cadaver heads were CT scanned at var

Visualization of the infratemporal fossa: enhancing anatomical learning through three-dimensional modeling.

The infratemporal fossa and pterygopalatine fossa are critical pathways for blood vessels and nerves leading to the orbit, nasal cavity, and oral cavity. Anatomical observation of these areas is challenging for learners due to their complex connections with surrounding structures and their deep location within the body. Since it is not easy to understand this area in three dimensions with only textbook images, there is a need to produce three-dimensional (3D) content. Most existing 3D data have reconstructed the digital imaging and communication in medicine files from computed tomography image
