Large language models: a new frontier in paediatric cataract patient education.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This was a cross-sectional comparative study. We evaluated the ability of three large language models (LLMs) (ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and Google Bard) to generate novel patient education materials (PEMs) and improve the readability of existing PEMs on paediatric cataract. METHODS: We compared LLMs' responses to three prompts. Prompt A requested they write a handout on paediatric cataract that was 'easily understandable by an average American.' Prompt B modified prompt A and requested the handout be written at a 'sixth-grade reading level, using the Simple Measure of Gobbledyg

An ex vivo model for education and training of unilateral cleft lip surgery.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral cleft lip surgery is a complex procedure, and the outcome depends highly on the surgeon's experience. Digital simulations and low-fidelity models seem inadequate for effective surgical education and training. There are only few realistic models for haptic simulation of cleft surgery, which are all based on synthetic materials that are costly and complex to produce. Hence, they are not fully available to train and educate surgical trainees. This study aims to develop an inexpensive, widely available, high-fidelity, ex vivo model of a unilateral cleft lip using a porcine s

Utility of 3-dimensionally printed models for parent education in pediatric plagiocephaly.

OBJECTIVES: Demonstrate the benefits of using 3D printed skull models when counseling families regarding disorders of the cranial vault (namely plagiocephaly and craniosynostosis), as traditional imaging review and discussion is often insufficient. METHODS: 3D printed skull models of a patient with plagiocephaly were used during clinic appointments to aid in the counseling of parents. Surveys were distributed following the appointment to evaluate the utility of these models during the discussion. RESULTS: Fifty surveys were distributed (with a 98% response rate). 3D models were both empirica

Creation of an optic nerve sheath diameter ultrasound model for NeuroICU education.

BACKGROUND: Using ultrasound to measure optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is an emerging bedside technique to noninvasively assess intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with brain injury. This technique is unique among bedside ultrasonography and is often performed by providers who have no formal ultrasound training. We sought to create a low-cost, 3D, reusable ONSD model to train neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care providers in measuring ICP. RESULTS: We identified 253 articles, of which 15 were associated with models and 2 with simulation. One gelatin model was reported, upon whic

Use of 3D models of vascular rings and slings to improve resident education.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a manufacturing method by which an object is created in an additive process, and can be used with medical imaging data to generate accurate physical reproductions of organs and tissues for a variety of applications. We hypothesized that using 3D printed models of congenital cardiovascular lesions to supplement an educational lecture would improve learners' scores on a board-style examination. DESIGN AND INTERVENTION: Patients with normal and abnormal aortic arches were selected and anonymized to generate 3D printed models. A cohort of pediatric an

An education model for otitis media care field-tested in Latin America.

The World Health Organization has designated the teaching of otitis media management skills a "priority" status. Effective treatment of ear disease requires that the physician be both informationally educated as well as physically trained to use otoscopy. Little is known about how well this education can be provided in a short time and in a foreign country. To more objectively assess teaching effect, results of an education session for rural Mexican pediatric primary-care providers who were given an intensive otitis media lecture and otoscopy skills workshop in 1990 were evaluated. To test imm

Incorporating HIV education and counseling into routine prenatal care: a program model.

This article reports how a prenatal clinic in a major urban teaching hospital has developed and integrated an HIV education and counseling program into routine prenatal care. The patient population served are predominantly minority women living in an inner-city community that has been disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic. Implementation of the patient program has required training and support for all professional staff. Staff training served as a foundation for this comprehensive patient program, which has reached all prenatal patients regardless of risk behavior. The program has s

A psychosocial model of health behavior: implications for nutrition education, research and policy.

The paper presents a multidimensional psychological model of determinants of health behavior, tested empirically in three countries to ascertain its validity. The model postulates that given that ethnic, socioeconomic, and biological statuses (exogenous variables) are homogeneous, a health risk-taking behavior in a population is a function of direct, additive, and interaction effects of five categories of independent variables both internal to the persons and external in the action environment. Although the model is tested on contraceptive behavior, it is argued that the determinants and basic

Problem-based learning design multi-objective optimization to smart education: a digital transformation digital literacy model of higher education.

Data-driven approaches of instructional design are more necessary than ever for higher education institutions in the era of digital transformation, especially when faced with noisy and heterogenous educational data. In the digital transformation age, the requirement for data-driven approaches to instructional design that are stable for educational data is growing. Past studies of smart education and problem-based learning (PBL) have been mostly descriptive models or single-dataset studies, with few studies providing evidence for robustness-aware instructional design under different data charac
