Statistical Analysis of the Performance of Open-Access Language Models: A Tool in the Clinical Laboratory.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) has been progressively incorporated into the clinical analysis laboratory, optimizing data management, detection of complex patterns, and image-based diagnostic support. Among emerging tools, Large Language Models (LLMs) represent a significant advance by enabling natural language processing for clinical, analytical, and academic tasks. However, their performance is heterogeneous and depends on model architecture, training, and contextual fine-tuning. Objective: To compare the performance of eight openly accessible large language models (LLMs) applied

The Case for Interpretable Geometry: Statistical Shape Models vs. Curvature-Based Descriptors in Aortic Disease Classification.

PURPOSE: Quantifying aortic morphology is central to surgical planning for thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), yet no consensus exists on how best to represent three-dimensional aortic shape for outcome prediction. Two broad strategies have emerged: statistical shape analysis (SSA), which relies on statistical methods and dimensionality reduction to capture the most significant shape modes, and geometrically-informed approaches that extract descriptors grounded in differential geometry. Here, we directly compare these paradigms on a cohort of 290 CTA scans classified by surgical outco

Dual statistical models link baseline visual attention measure to risk for significant symptomatic concussion in sports.

AIM: Athletic pre-season testing can establish functional baseline for comparison following concussion. Whether impacts of future concussions may be foretold by such testing is little known. MATERIALS & METHODS: Two sets of models for a significant burden of concussion were generated: a traditional approach using a series of logistic regressions, and a penalized regression approach using elastic net. RESULTS: 3091 youth and adult athletes were baseline-assessed. 90 subsequently experienced concussion and 35 were still experiencing a significant burden of concussion when tested within two wee

Comparison of statistical models for nested association mapping in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) through computer simulations.

BACKGROUND: Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is an important oilseed crop throughout the world, serving as source for edible oil and renewable energy. Development of nested association mapping (NAM) population and methods is of importance for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping in rapeseed. The objectives of the research were to compare the power of QTL detection 1- β(∗) (β(∗) is the empirical type II error rate) (i) of two mating designs, double haploid (DH-NAM) and backcross (BC-NAM), (ii) of different statistical models, and (iii) for different genetic situations. Assessing pneumococcal meningitis association with viral respiratory infections and antibiotics: insights from statistical and mathematical models.

Pneumococcus is an important human pathogen, highly antibiotic resistant and a major cause of bacterial meningitis worldwide. Better prevention requires understanding the drivers of pneumococcal infection incidence and antibiotic susceptibility. Although respiratory viruses (including influenza) have been suggested to influence pneumococcal infections, the underlying mechanisms are still unknown, and viruses are rarely considered when studying pneumococcus epidemiology. Here, we propose a novel mathematical model to examine hypothetical relationships between Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis

The contribution of breast cancer pathology to statistical models to predict mutation risk in BRCA carriers.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 associated breast cancer comprises a small but important group of hereditary breast cancer. Testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 has significant clinical and personal implications for the patients in terms of therapy and follow-up of individual family members. The sequencing of the genes is expensive and since the information derived may have a profound effect on the individual and family members, it is important that testing is done only when the risk of carrying a mutation is thought to be high. Over the last decade, researchers have developed a number of statistical models for predic

A statistical damage model for coupled mechano-electrophysiological axonal injury.

Deformation-induced injury of white matter nerve bundles is prevalent in central nervous system injuries, leading to a series of neurological dysfunctions. To describe the effect of deformation injury on the physiological electrical signals of neurons, several axonal electrophysiological damage models based on the Hodgkin-Huxley equations have been proposed. However, none of these models can fully characterize the results of white matter nerve stretching experiments under different rates and amplitudes. Building on previous work by peers, we propose a novel axonal deformation damage model that

An Exploratory Statistical Modeling Framework for National Rule-of-Law Profiles.

The rule of law can be considered as a multidimensional institutional phenomenon, which emerges through interplay between legal, governance and administrative institutions. The paper offers an exploratory statistical modeling approach to find empirical patterns in national rule-of-law profiles according to the 2024 World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index. Eight dimensions of the index are considered to identify differences between countries and similarities of their multidimensional institutional performance. Principal Component Analysis reveals strong associations between eight dimensio

Unraveling the heterogeneity of hyperuricemia using untargeted metabolomics and statistical modeling.

Hyperuricemia is the second most prevalent metabolic disorder globally and exhibits pronounced heterogeneity in clinical practice. Only about 10% of individuals with asymptomatic hyperuricemia (HUA) progress to gout, yet the lack of specific biomarkers and precise therapeutic targets hinders accurate prediction of disease progression. This work focuses on investigating the heterogeneity of hyperuricemia, aiming to elucidate potential mechanisms underlying its transition from asymptomatic to symptomatic stages. A total of 107 serum samples were analyzed, including 36 healthy controls (Con), and

Statistical mechanics and phantom network modelling of disordered biopolymer gels.

Disordered biopolymer gels, such as alginate gels, contain disordered amorphous regions as well as ordered regions known as junction zones, the latter playing a paramount role in maintaining the integrity of the gel network. The considerable dimensions of these junction zones and their physical interactions are responsible for distinctive phenomena, such as self-healing, observed in biopolymer gels. Compared to rubber-like materials, where polymer chains are interconnected by chemical cross-links, statistical mechanics modeling of disordered biopolymer gels poses new challenges due to the need

Challenges in Histological Endpoints for MASH Therapies: An Exercise in Statistical Modelling.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory-accepted efficacy endpoints for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH; recently updated to metabolic-dysfunction associated steatohepatitis, MASH) clinical trials include fibrosis improvement with no worsening of NASH or NASH resolution with no worsening of fibrosis determined by liver biopsy using the NASH Clinical Research Network criteria. These endpoints involve the scoring of four liver histology parameters, all of which are associated with significant inter-/intra-reader variability. Since few trials have shown positive results with these endpoints, we evaluated the e

Detecting missing teeth on PMCT using statistical shape modeling.

The identification of teeth in 3D medical images can be a first step for victim identification from scant remains, for comparison of ante- and postmortem images or for other forensic investigations. We evaluate the performance of a tooth detection approach on mandibles with missing parts or pathologies based on statistical shape models. The proposed approach relies on a shape model that has been built from the full lower jaw, including the mandible and teeth. The model is fitted to the target, resulting in a reconstruction, in addition to a label map that indicates the presence or absence of t

Characterization and statistical modeling of glycosylation changes in sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited genetic disorder that causes anemia, pain crises, organ infarction, and infections in 13 million people worldwide. Previous studies have revealed changes in sialic acid levels associated with red blood cell sickling and showed that stressed red blood cells bare surface-exposed clustered terminal mannose structures mediating hemolysis, but detailed glycan structures and anti-glycan antibodies in sickle cell disease remain understudied. Here, we compiled results obtained through lectin arrays, glycan arrays, and mass spectrometry to interrogate red blood cell

Statistical modeling of the effect of rainfall flushing on dengue transmission in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Rainfall patterns are one of the main drivers of dengue transmission as mosquitoes require standing water to reproduce. However, excess rainfall can be disruptive to the Aedes reproductive cycle by "flushing out" aquatic stages from breeding sites. We developed models to predict the occurrence of such "flushing" events from rainfall data and to evaluate the effect of flushing on dengue outbreak risk in Singapore between 2000 and 2016. METHODS: We used machine learning and regression models to predict days with "flushing" in the dataset based on entomological and corresponding rain

A variance components model for statistical inference on functional connectivity networks.

We propose a variance components linear modeling framework to conduct statistical inference on functional connectivity networks that directly accounts for the temporal autocorrelation inherent in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time series data and for the heterogeneity across subjects in the study. The novel method estimates the autocorrelation structure in a nonparametric and subject-specific manner, and estimates the variance due to the heterogeneity using iterative least squares. We apply the new model to a resting-state fMRI study to compare the functional connectivity networ

Assessing risk factors for dental caries: a statistical modeling approach.

The problem of identifying potential determinants and predictors of dental caries is of key importance in caries research and it has received considerable attention in the scientific literature. From the methodological side, a broad range of statistical models is currently available to analyze dental caries indices (DMFT, dmfs, etc.). These models have been applied in several studies to investigate the impact of different risk factors on the cumulative severity of dental caries experience. However, in most of the cases (i) these studies focus on a very specific subset of risk factors; and (ii)

Statistical modeling of valley fever data in Kern County, California.

Coccidioidomycosis (valley fever) is a fungal infection found in the southwestern US, northern Mexico, and some places in Central and South America. The fungus that causes it (Coccidioides immitis) is normally soil-dwelling but, if disturbed, becomes air-borne and infects the host when its spores are inhaled. It is thus natural to surmise that weather conditions that foster the growth and dispersal of the fungus must have an effect on the number of cases in the endemic areas. We present here an attempt at the modeling of valley fever incidence in Kern County, California, by the implementation

Statistical modeling of positron emission tomography images in wavelet space.

A new method is introduced for the analysis of multiple studies measured with emission tomography. Traditional models of statistical analysis (ANOVA, ANCOVA and other linear models) are applied not directly on images but on their correspondent wavelet transforms. Maps of model effects estimated from these models are filtered using a thresholding procedure based on a simple Bonferroni correction and then reconstructed. This procedure inherently represents a complete modeling approach and therefore obtains estimates of the effects of interest (condition effect, difference between conditions, cov
