BACKGROUND: African swine fever (ASF) represents one of the most devastating viral threats to global pig production, with mortality often approaching 100% and severe socioeconomic consequences. India confirmed its first ASF outbreaks in 2020 in the north-eastern states, but no cases had previously been documented on the west coast. This study presents the first confirmed ASF outbreaks in pig farms on India's west coast, providing clinicopathological and molecular insights.
MATERIALS: Between January and June 2025, two pig farms in North Goa experienced unusually high mortalities. The affected

Close contact with infected animals is one of the main risk factors for zoonotic transmission of enteric protozoan parasite Blastocystis and thus, several animal species are being screened for the detection of the zoonotic subtypes. For this purpose, 22 fecal samples were collected from healthy cattle aged > 2 months and 39 fecal samples were also collected from cattle (aged <2 months) which are treated with TMP-SMX due to diarrhea. Later, Blastocystis sp. and subtypes were investigated by a PCR targeting the SSU rRNA gene and subsequently by sequencing. Among the 22 fecal samples collected fr

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) remains a constant threat to the poultry industry even with intensive vaccination programmes. In the present study, 40 samples were collected from farms showing high mortalities in some Egyptian governorates between 2016 and 2018. Tracheal samples were collected for virus isolation and confirmed by real-time RT-PCR. Molecular characterisation was performed by sequencing, followed by phylogenetic analysis of the novel sequences. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations were performed on different organs from NDV-infected broilers. The phylogenetic ana

From a longitudinal survey conducted on 30 Danish mink farms in 2016, 11.0% of faecal samples (456/4140) were positive for Cystoisospora laidlawi oocysts by microscopy, with 60% (189/315) of mink being positive at least once during the study period. Morphological analysis of sporulated oocysts identified Cystoisospora oocysts measuring 34.3 × 29.5 μm with an oocyst length/width (L/W) ratio of 1.2. The morphological features of the oocysts were identical to Isospora laidlawi previously morphological identified in farmed mink from Denmark and elsewhere. Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA sequence

Enterobacterales such as Escherichia coli are known to produce extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes at high rates in Ghana, West Africa. However, little is known about the One Health connections that may facilitate the dissemination of these resistant bacteria. This study aimed to use whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to investigate resistance determinants, virulence genes, and associated mobile genetic elements (MGEs) of ESBL-producing E. coli isolated from stool samples of Ghanaian children under five years of age, both with and without diarrhoea, and from farm animals, including poultry

PURPOSE: Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Blastocystis are enteric unicellular microorganisms with a broad host range and global distribution. Both pathogens are associated with gastrointestinal disorders in their hosts and represent notable public health risks. However, molecular epidemiological data on E. bieneusi and Blastocystis in chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar) remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of the two pathogens in farmed chukar partridges and evaluate their zoonotic potential.

Gastro-intestinal nematodes (GINs) are still of great concern in grazing ruminants, such as camelids, ovines and caprines, affecting animal health and productivity. This is mainly due to the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) to the compounds used long term, without much evaluation on their efficacy, including ivermectin (IVM), the most used anthelmintic drug in livestock. The aims of this study were to determine the efficacy of IVM and identify which GIN species are affecting different ruminant farms in Quebec (QC), Canada. Firstly, we collected fecal samples from six farms with diff

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in farm environments can be transferred to humans through the food chain and occupational exposure. Enterococcus infections caused by linezolid resistant enterococci (LRE) are becoming more challenging to treat as their resistance to antibiotics intensifies. Therefore, this study investigated the molecular epidemiology, phenotypic and genomic characterization of enterococci in seven species of farm animals (sheep, chicken, swine, camel, cattle, equine, pigeon) anal swab from Xinjiang, China by agar dilution method, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), whole-genom

Salmonella is considered one of the leading causes for foodborne diseases in humans. Pork and its products contaminated with Salmonella are increasingly recognized as an important source of human salmonellosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance and prevalence of integrons in Salmonella isolates from pig farms. In total, 92 of 724 (12.7%) samples were Salmonella-positive, including 64 (15.0%) from fecal samples, 27 (12.6%) from floor samples, 1 (4.5%) from water samples, and 0 from feed and air samples. These isolates showed the highest resistance to tetracyc

Streptococcosis cause severe losses for global tilapia farming, especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize streptococci recovered from Nile tilapia farmed in the Philippines. Moribund and apparently healthy fish were sampled from grow-out cages, ponds and hatcheries. Clinical signs observed included exophthalmia, eye opacity, ascites, lethargy, erratic swimming and haemorrhages. Results showed that both Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus agalactiae were associated with disease in these sites. Consistent with global reports, including those fro
