Increasing popularity of rats as domestic pets and continued use of rodents in scientific laboratories has contributed to a notable increase in reported cases of rat-bite fever caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis in the United States. S. moniliformis is a gram-negative filamentous bacterium that is a commensal bacterium found in the nasopharyngeal tract of rats. This is a case of a young male developing rat-bite fever bacteremia without a known bite from a rat, but with incidental contact with oral secretions. The patient developed significant debilitating symptoms including migratory polym

We report a Streptobacillus moniliformis epizootic in barrier-maintained SPF mice. Although various inbred and F1 hybrid strains of mice have been kept in this animal facility, only C57BL/6J Han [corrected] mice showed clinical signs of disease. During the course of the epizootic, 825 breeding animals (approximately 36% of the breeders) died or had to be killed because of severe clinical signs. Although sequential treatment with ampicillin and chlortetracycline gave good therapeutic results, the animal facility was vacated in order to exclude any risk of cross-contamination of the other rodent

European hedgehogs, Erinaceus europaeus (Linnaeus, 1758), are small mammals found in western Europe and also in parts of northern Europe. They can be seen in rural, suburban and urban areas, but are usually found in grassland with edge habitats. These animals are omnivorous and serve as definitive or paratenic hosts for several parasites, including acanthocephalans (phylum Acanthocephala). During necropsy of a European hedgehog, a single adult parasite was collected from the intestinal lumen and preserved in 70% ethanol. After morphological evaluation of the specimen, it was identified as Moni

Rat bite fever is characterized by a clinical triad of symptoms, fever, rash and arthritis. It is transmitted by rodents and mainly due to infection by Streptobacillus moniliformis, a fastidious bacterium carried by Rattus norvegicus. This case report presents the case of a patient who developed septic arthritis and fever after a wild rat bite, with subsequent isolation of S. moniliformis from the joint fluid. Upon reviewing 45 other published case reports of S. moniliformis osteoarticular infections following contact with either a rat or its secretions, it was firstly observed that the rat bi

Rat bite fever (RBF) caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis has been described as a diagnostic challenge. While it has a favorable prognosis with treatment, timely diagnosis is hindered by the lack of culture-free identification methods. Here we present a multiplex real-time PCR assay that detects the zoonotic Streptobacillus spp. as well as differentiate the primary causative agent of RBF, Streptobacillus moniliformis. The performance of this assay was evaluated using mock clinical specimens for blood, serum, and urine. Analytical sensitivity was determined to be 3-4 genome equivalents (GE)/µ

Streptobacillus (S.) moniliformis is a rat-associated zoonotic pathogen that occasionally causes disease in other species. We investigated the working hypothesis that intranasal infection might lead to different immune responses in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice associated with distinct pathologies. This study confirmed with 75% mortality the known high susceptibility of C57BL/6 mice to Streptobacillus moniliformis infection in comparison to BALB/c mice which did not develop signs of disease. Main pathologies in C57BL/6 mice were purulent to necrotizing lymphadenitis and pneumonia. Significant seroco

Pentastomiasis, a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by pentastomids, has been increasingly documented in Thailand. Historically, morphological identification has been the only diagnostic method, but it is inadequate due to morphological similarities between larval stages and limited taxonomic keys. To overcome this, molecular diagnosis is required. However, the DNA sequence information of these neglected parasites remains largely unknown. In this study, pentastomid larvae were collected from the greater omentum of a patient in Northern Thailand. The species of pentastomid larvae was molecularl

Two bacterial strains, HKU33(T) and HKU34, were isolated in Hong Kong from the pus aspirated from the right peritonsillar abscess of a patient with quinsy and the left elbow joint fluid of another patient with tophaceous gout and left elbow septic arthritis, respectively. The bacteria were Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, non-haemolytic pleomorphic bacilli. They grew best on Columbia agar with 5 % defibrinated sheep blood in an anaerobic environment or aerobic environment with 5 % CO2. They also grew on chocolate agar but not on MacConkey agar. They were catalase- and cytoch

BACKGROUND: This case report explores a unique instance of rat-bite fever (RBF) caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis, with an unexpected false-positive result on dengue serology, making the initial diagnosis challenging.
CASE SUMMARY: A 47-year-old male presented with acute onset of fever, sore throat, and migratory polyarthritis in a dengue-endemic region. His laboratory investigations revealed a normal white blood cell count, thrombocytopenia, a mildly raised C-reactive protein, and positive dengue IgM serology. He did not report any high-risk sexual exposures or recent diarrheal illness.

We herein report the case of a 61-year-old Japanese cirrhotic patient who developed rat bite fever (RBF) and whose first presentation was serious clinical features mimicking those of Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). In addition to the critical clinical conditions, since the histopathology from purpuric skin eruptions was not inconsistent with that of HSP, therapy with prednisolone was promptly started in order to prevent his death. However, initial blood culture on admission yielded a small and slow-growing bacterial growth, which was gradually revealed by further subculture to be a peculiar ba

Streptobacillus (S.) moniliformis is the most important pathogen causing rat bite fever (RBF) worldwide. This zoonotic pathogen is understudied mainly due to difficulties in culturing S. moniliformis as a fastidious microorganism. Therefore, advances in molecular detection techniques are highly needed, especially with regard to the widespread availability of real-time quantitative (q) PCR in laboratories. In this study, we aimed to develop a qPCR for the identification of Streptobacillus species and quantification of S. moniliformis in clinical samples, especially those derived from tissue sam

Fastidious anaerobe broth and brain-heart infusion cysteine broth supplemented with 'Panmede' (a papain digest of ox liver) 2.5% supported the recovery of five Streptobacillus moniliformis strains from simulated blood cultures. Other media tested in parallel--brain heart infusion cysteine broth without 'Panmede' and Brewer's thioglycollate broth--were unreliable. Sodium polyanethol sulphonate (Liquoid) 0.05%, inhibited five isolates of S. moniliformis, including isolates from patients with Haverhill Fever. Occasionally, Liquoid 0.025% was also inhibitory and a heavy inoculum of one strain, NCT

A new species of Moniliformis, M. tupaia n. sp. is described using integrated morphological methods (light and scanning electron microscopy) and molecular techniques (sequencing and analysing the nuclear 18S, ITS, 28S regions and mitochondrial cox1 and cox2 genes), based on specimens collected from the intestine of the northern tree shrew Tupaia belangeri chinensis Anderson (Scandentia: Tupaiidae) in China. Phylogenetic analyses show that M. tupaia n. sp. is a sister to M. moniliformis in the genus Moniliformis, and also challenge the systematic status of Nephridiacanthus major. Moniliformis t

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Streptobacillus moniliformis is the causative agent of zoonotic diseases such as rat-bite fever (RBF) and Haverhill fever (HF). While human infections are well-documented, limited studies have explored its presence in rodents in India. This study aimed to detect S. moniliformis in free-living bandicoots (Bandicota bengalensis and Bandicota indica) in Northeastern India and perform a phylogenetic analysis to assess its genetic relationship with global isolates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 106 bandicoots (B. bengalensis, n = 76; B. indica, n = 30) were captured from va

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication of orthopedic arthroplasty surgery. Rat bite fever is a rare infection with Streptobacillus moniliformis (S. moniliformis). Rat bite fever can lead to serious complications such as pyogenic infection of joints, bacteremia, endocarditis and even death. We hereby present the first case of a patient with a total knee arthroplasty, infected with S. moniliformis, successfully treated by surgical debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR).
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 64-year-old female. S. moniliformis wa

A new acanthocepohalan species, Moniliformis saudi sp. n. is described from the desert hedgehog, Paraechinus aethiopicus (Ehrenberg), in central Saudi Arabia. Fourteen other valid species of Moniliformis Travassos, 1915 are recognised. The new species of Moniliformis is distinguished by having a small proboscis (315-520 µm long and 130-208 µm wide) with two apical pores, 14 rows of 8 hooks each and small hooks, thre largest being 25-31 µm long anteriorly. Distinguishing features are incorporated in a dichotomous key to the species of Moniliformis. The description is augmented by scanning elect
