Six unusual monoterpene-phenylpropanoid [2 + 3] cycloadducts from Kaempferia galanga with anti-inflammatory activity.

Six unusual monoterpene-phenylpropanoid [2 + 3] cycloadducts, named kaegalangols A-F (1-6), were isolated from the rhizomes of Kaempferia galanga. Their structures were identified through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, ECD, and quantum chemical computation. Biosynthetically, these compounds were generated from a [2 + 3] cycloaddition between ethyl p-methoxycinnamate, the major constituent in K. galanga, and different monoterpenes. All compounds demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7

Molluscicidal activity of monoterpenes and their effects on inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity on Biomphalaria glabrata, an intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni.

The molluscicidal action of essential oils have been attributed to the most prevalent terpene compounds. However, molluscicidal properties, mode of action, and toxicity to non-target organisms remain unclear. In this study, the molluscicidal potential of four monoterpenes (camphor, thymol, α-pinene, and 1,8-cineole) against the snail Biomphalaria glabrata, an intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, was analyzed. The molluscicide activity of each monoterpene was assessed by the standardized test of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the monoterpenes considered active against B. glabrata

Anointing chemicals and hematophagous arthropods: responses by ticks and mosquitoes to citrus (Rutaceae) peel exudates and monoterpene components.

Some birds and mammals roll on or wipe themselves with the fruits or leaves of Citrus spp. or other Rutaceae. These anointing behaviors, as with anointing in general, are thought to function in the topical acquisition of chemicals that deter consumers, including hematophagous arthropods. We measured avoidance and other responses by nymphal lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) and adult female yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) to lemon peel exudate and to 24 volatile monoterpenes (racemates and isomers), including hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, acetates, ketones, and oxides, present

Biochemical analysis of the TPS-b subfamily reveals a cineole-centered monoterpene biosynthetic module in Medicago truncatula.

Terpenoids constitute one of the largest and most structurally diverse classes of plant specialized metabolites, with diversity generated by terpene synthases (TPSs) and downstream tailoring enzymes. In Medicago truncatula, the TPS-b subfamily comprises five putative synthases, two of which are embedded within a previously uncharacterized genomic locus containing a cytochrome P450 (CYP) and a BAHD-type acyltransferase. Here, we present a comprehensive biochemical analysis of the M. truncatula TPS-b subfamily and define a cineole-centered monoterpene biosynthetic module. Heterologous expression
