To determine whether amino acid sequence variation exists in the Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) cytotoxin (MbxA) from geographically diverse M. bovis isolated in the United States, mbxA was amplified and sequenced. The MbxA deduced amino acid sequence from M. bovis originally isolated in California, Washington, North Carolina, and Georgia, as well as reference strains of M. bovis isolated at the National Animal Disease Laboratory, Ames, IA, USA, all encoded a nearly identical 927 amino acid protein. MbxA from two of the four California isolates (SFS 9a and SFS 100a) differed from all other isolate

Moraxella catarrhalis is a leading cause of acute otitis media in children and is a cause of respiratory disease in adults with underlying lung disease. This organism is a strict human pathogen that has an absolute requirement for iron in order to grow and cause disease. Previous studies identified transferrin and lactoferrin receptors used by M. catarrhalis to obtain iron from the human host, yet other iron-acquisition systems remain undefined. In this study, it is demonstrated that this strict mucosal pathogen can utilize haemoglobin (Hb) as a sole source of iron for growth. A novel 107 kDa

An epidemic follicular conjunctivitis affecting teen-aged females has been studied. Moraxella lacunata was isolated from 11% of the patients, a frequency far above the rate found in other types of chronic conjunctivitis. The condition is suggested to be the chronic follicular conjunctivitis (Axenfeld) due to Moraxella lacunata.

Moraxella catarrhalis, a commensal in the human nasopharynx, plays a significant role in the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Its pathogenicity involves adherence to respiratory epithelial cells, leading to infection through a macropinocytosis-like mechanism. Previous investigations highlighted the diverse abilities of M. catarrhalis isolates with different phenotypes to adhere to and invade respiratory epithelial cells. This study used a murine COPD model and in vitro experiments to explore the factors influencing the pathogenicity of distinct phenotypes o

We present a rare case of Moraxella catarrhalis meningitis in a 51-year-old immunocompetent woman after surgical resection of a fourth ventricle ganglioma. Notably, the patient had no history of sinusitis or otitis media, which are typical predisposing factors for Moraxella infection. She developed symptoms including headache, altered mental status, and neurological deficits three days post discharge, leading to her diagnosis confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid culture. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges and management complexities of atypical meningitis post neurosurgery. The occurre

Otitis media (OM) is a prevalent pediatric infection characterized by painful inflammation of the middle ear. The Gram-negative diplococcus Moraxella catarrhalis is a commensal of the nasopharynx and one of three leading causative agents of OM. The most recent work on this multifaceted disease indicates that biofilms and polymicrobial infections play a pivotal role in recurrent and chronic OM, which are difficult to eradicate using standard antibiotic protocols. Although there have been significant advances in OM research, the actual bacterial and viral interactions leading to pathogenesis rem

Community acquired pneumonia (CAP), an acute infection of the pulmonary parenchyma acquired in the community, is generally treated in an outpatient setting and involves different etiological agents. In the adult community, the most common pathogen in the disease is Streptococcus pneumonia, though other multiple etiological agents (atypical) have been involved, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila. The genus Moraxella consists of aerobic, oxidase-positive gram-negative coccobacilli. Moraxella catarrhalis is known to be a common inhabitant of the

AIM: To analyse the clinical presentation, identify predisposing risk factors and evaluate the outcome of treatment of Moraxella keratitis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out of culture-proved cases of Moraxella keratitis from hospital records during a 10-year period (from December 1995 to November 2005) at the Corneal Unit of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.
RESULTS: 95 episodes of Moraxella keratitis were identified in 92 patients. 3 (3.2%) patients had recurrent keratitis. The mean age of the patients was 70 (range 17-93) years. Multiple predi

Moraxella catarrhalis is an important pathogen of humans. It is a common cause of respiratory infections, particularly otitis media in children and lower respiratory tract infections in the elderly. Colonisation of the upper respiratory tract appears to be associated with infection in many cases, although this association is not well understood. Nosocomial transmission is being increasingly documented and the emergence of this organism as a cause of bacteremia is of concern. The widespread production of a beta-lactamase enzyme renders Moraxella catarrhalis resistant to the penicillins. Cephalo

We describe a patient with an acute ulcerated pre-septal cellulitis with subsequent spread across the face, in whom conjunctival swabs demonstrated the presence of Moraxella species. Unusually, this organism was resistant to penicillin. Clinical improvement was only achieved when treatment with co-amoxiclav was commenced on the basis of the antibiotic sensitivities demonstrated by culture of this organism. Moraxella species are rare skin pathogens but may be underestimated as they usually respond to a wide range of antibiotics; they should be considered as a cause of facial cellulitis or erysi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy of a recombinant Moraxella bovis pilin-cytotoxin-Moraxella bovoculi cytotoxin subunit vaccine to prevent naturally occurring infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK).
ANIMALS: 107 beef steers.
PROCEDURES: 2 groups of calves were inoculated SC with an immunostimulating complex (ISCOM) matrix adjuvant (control group; n = 54) or a recombinant M bovis pilin-cytotoxin-M bovoculi cytotoxin subunit antigen with the ISCOM matrix adjuvant (vaccine group; 53); calves received booster injections 21 days later. Calves were examined once weekly for 16 weeks. Investigat

A 2-year-old, previously healthy, male presented with an insidious history of intermittent left knee pain and edema who had been evaluated in the emergency department on multiple occasions with unremarkable imaging and normal laboratory results. On the day of presentation, he had mild edema of the left knee and inability to bear weight. Synovial fluid analysis showed an elevated white cell count with neutrophil predominance and mildly elevated inflammatory markers, consistent with septic arthritis. He underwent knee arthrotomy with irrigation and debridement and was initiated on broad spectrum

A-26-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with diffuse abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. He had a history of malignant nephrosclerosis, for which he had been receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) for the past 14 months. His PD effluent was cloudy and turbid (white blood cell count, 10,528/μL; neutrophils 95.2%). A Gram-negative coccobacillus was isolated from peritoneal fluid culture. However, the organism could not be identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) (Vitek MS, bioMérieux), but was identified as Moraxella osloensis

Moraxella catarrhalis is a gram-negative, catalase and oxidase positive diplococcus. While it causes otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis and conjunctivitis in children and adults, it has a tendency to cause lower respiratory tract infections in older ages. More severe clinical pictures with the range of sepsis to endocarditis are also seen in immunocompromised patients. In this report, a case of M. catarrhalis endocarditis in an immunocompetent host who needed valve replacement has been presented. Forty three years old female patient was admitted to our hospital with the complaints of fever, n

Moraxella catarrhalis rarely causes severe infections or bacteraemia in healthy subjects. In the literature only four cases of clinical sepsis with M. catarrhalis have been described, mostly in immunocompromised patients. We describe a case of a 34-year-old patient with Kugelberg-Welander disease and low body weight (28 kg) who developed clinical sepsis due to M. catarrhalis bacteraemia. A review of the literature is given.

Six cases of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and moose (Alces alces) in Wyoming (USA) were investigated during fall and winter of 1995 and 1996. Excessive lacrimation, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal opacity were observed in mule deer. Moose had severe mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulceration. Hemolytic, non-piliated Moraxella ovis was isolated from two mule deer and two moose. We attempted to reproduce IKC in three mule deer fawns using an isolate of M. ovis from a clinically affected mule deer. These fawns did

Since its discovery at the end of the nineteenth century, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis has undergone several changes of nomenclature and periodic changes in its perceived status as either a commensal or a pathogen. Molecular analysis based on DNA hybridisation or 16S rDNA sequence comparisons has established its phylogenetic position as a member of the Moraxellaceae and shown that it is related more closely to Acinetobacter spp. than to the genus Neisseria in which it was placed formerly. However, confusion with phenotypically similar Neisseria spp. can occur in the routine diagnostic l

A Moraxella sp. strain VG45 capable of utilizing o-phthalate and salicylate as a sole source of carbon and energy was isolated. The degradation of o-phthalate occurs via phthalate 4,5-dioxygenase, 4,5-dihydro-4,5-dihydroxyphthalate dehydrogenase, 4,5-dihydroxyphthalate decarboxylase and protocatechuate 4,5-dioxygenase. Salicylate is degraded via salicylate 5-hydroxylase, gentisate 1,2-dioxygenase and then by a glutathione-independent maleylpyruvate hydrolase. Further, a plasmid of app. 60 kilobase pairs (kb) is involved in the degradation of the o-phthalate and salicylate and the enzymes of th
