Potent targeted larvicidal activities of marine-derived Bacillus sp. bacterial extracts on mosquito vectors.

Mosquito vector-borne diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity across the globe. Current vector control strategies mainly rely on chemical insecticides, but their incessant usage has resulted in the development of resistance. Insecticidal agents of microbial origin have proven as good alternative tools for vector control of mosquito. In the present study, we examined larvicidal activities of the extracts from culture supernatants of marine bacteria (extracts) against major mosquito vectors from India. Out of 55 tested marine bacterial extracts, 12 extracts caused 90-10

Impact of different mosquito collection methods on indicators of Anopheles malaria vectors in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Methods used to sample mosquitoes are important to consider when estimating entomologic metrics. Human landing catches (HLCs) are considered the gold standard for collecting malaria vectors. However, HLCs are labour intensive, can expose collectors to transmission risk, and are difficult to implement at scale. This study compared alternative methods to HLCs for collecting Anopheles mosquitoes in eastern Uganda. METHODS: Between June and November 2021, mosquitoes were collected from randomly selected households in three parishes in Tororo and Busia districts. Mosquitoes were collec

High diversity of mosquito vectors in Cambodian primary schools and consequences for arbovirus transmission.

Only few data exist in Cambodia on mosquito diversity and their potential role as vectors. Many arboviruses, such as dengue and Japanese encephalitis, are endemic and mostly affect children in the country. This research sets out to evaluate vector relative abundance and diversity in primary schools in Cambodia in an attempt to explain the apparent burden of dengue fever, severe dengue (DEN), Japanese encephalitis (JE), other arboviral diseases and malaria among children, 15 years and under, attending selected primary schools through vector surveys. Entomological surveys were implemented in pri

Unique PFK regulatory property from some mosquito vectors of disease, and from Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Arthropod-borne diseases are some of the most rapidly spreading diseases. Reducing the vector population is currently the only effective way to reduce case numbers. Central metabolic pathways are potential targets to control vector populations, but have not been well explored to this aim. The information available on energy metabolism, as a way to control lifespan and dispersion through flight of dipteran vectors, is inadequate. METHODS: Phosphofructokinase (PFK) activity was measured in the presence of both of its substrates, fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) and ATP, as well as some al

Surveillance of Rift Valley Fever Virus in Mosquito Vectors of the Republic of Korea.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an acute mosquito-borne viral zoonotic disease that affects mainly domestic ruminants and humans. RVF virus (RVFV) was first identified in Kenya in 1931 and was reported to be endemic in Africa but has recently spread to the Arabian Peninsula. With increasing climate change and globalization of trade in animals and animal products, there is great concern that the disease will spread worldwide to regions such as Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Although RVFV has not been reported in the Republic of Korea (ROK), the possibility of RVFV introduction is increasing because

Potential mosquito vectors of arboviruses in Portugal: species, distribution, abundance and West Nile infection.

Circulation of West Nile virus in Portugal was demonstrated by serological surveys, and the virus was isolated in 1969 from Anopheles maculipennis s.l. A survey of the whole country was carried out (2001-2004) to assess the abundance of mosquito species and to screen them for arbovirus infection. A total of 770 collections yielded 32460 mosquitoes of 15 species. The regions with the highest abundance of mosquitoes were the coastal and estuarine districts of Santarém, Setúbal and Faro. Culex pipiens s.l., An. maculipennis s.l., Cx. theileri and Ochlerotatus caspius were the most abundant and wi

Host-feeding patterns of suspected West Nile virus mosquito vectors in Delaware, 2001-2002.

Paucity of data on host-feeding patterns and behavior of 43 mosquito species that are reported as suspected West Nile virus (WN) vectors has limited full evaluation of their vectorial capacity. Recent studies addressing this issue need additional confirmation and should also be expanded to include collections of species or subpopulations attracted to humans. We used 4 types of collection methods to collect mosquitoes, including omnidirectional Fay-Prince traps, Centers for Disease Control-type light traps, gravid traps, and human-landing collections. Mosquitoes were collected during 2 full WN

Studies on the mosquito vectors of Japanese encephalitis virus in Mandya District, Karnataka, India.

Entomological investigations were carried out in areas affected by Japanese encephalitis (JE) in Mandya District, Karnataka, India, from 1983 to 1988, to determine species composition and the density of mosquito vectors, in relation to the incidence of JE cases. JE cases occurred in two spells in a year, one during April-June (summer epidemic) and another during October-December (winter epidemic). There was very high incidence of JE cases in extensively irrigated areas and a low incidence in some of the taluks with less or no irrigation systems. Among culicines, Culex tritaeniorhynchus was the

Mosquito vectors of dog heartworm in the United States: vector status and factors influencing transmission efficiency.

Dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is dependent on mosquito vectors for its maintenance and transmission among vertebrate hosts. Consequently, D. immitis abundance and distribution are closely linked with mosquito vector biology and ecology. Information on the important dog heartworm vectors in the United States is limited and no comprehensive surveillance of dog heartworm in US mosquitoes has been undertaken to date. Here, we review information gleaned from a number of field surveys documenting heartworm presence in wild mosquito populations as well as laboratory assessments of mosquito vect

Distribution of Brugia malayi larvae and DNA in vector and non-vector mosquitoes: implications for molecular diagnostics.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to extend prior studies of molecular detection of Brugia malayi DNA in vector (Aedes aegypti- Liverpool) and non-vector (Culex pipiens) mosquitoes at different times after ingestion of infected blood. RESULTS: Parasite DNA was detected over a two week time course in 96% of pooled thoraces of vector mosquitoes. In contrast, parasite DNA was detected in only 24% of thorax pools from non-vectors; parasite DNA was detected in 56% of midgut pools and 47% of abdomen pools from non-vectors. Parasite DNA was detected in vectors in the head immediately after t

Not all mosquitoes are created equal: A synthesis of vector competence experiments reinforces virus associations of Australian mosquitoes.

The globalization of mosquito-borne arboviral diseases has placed more than half of the human population at risk. Understanding arbovirus ecology, including the role individual mosquito species play in virus transmission cycles, is critical for limiting disease. Canonical virus-vector groupings, such as Aedes- or Culex-associated flaviviruses, have historically been defined using virus detection in field-collected mosquitoes, mosquito feeding patterns, and vector competence, which quantifies the intrinsic ability of a mosquito to become infected with and transmit a virus during a subsequent bl

Vector competence of temperate and tropical mosquito species for Babanki virus.

Babanki virus (BBKV), an alphavirus belonging to the Western Equine Encephalitis antigenic complex, was first isolated from Mansonia africana mosquitoes in 1969 but remains poorly characterized. Transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infectious female mosquito, it is associated with febrile illness, rash, and arthritis, similarly to its close relative Sindbis virus. No specific treatment or vaccine is currently available. Here, we experimentally assessed the vector competence of mosquito species from tropical and temperate regions under ecologically relevant temperature condi

A mycelium-based carbon dioxide source for trapping vector mosquitoes.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a key activator and attractant for mosquitoes during host-seeking and is routinely used to bait traps. However, deploying CO2 via dry ice, compressed gas, sugar-yeast reactions, or carbonate-acid systems can be expensive, short-lived, and labor-intensive. We evaluated the effectiveness of a commercially available, mycelium-based CO2 source (ExHale bag) for attracting mosquitoes to passive and active traps. Originally developed for greenhouse use, the ExHale bag provides sustained CO2 release for up to 6 mo. Under semi-field conditions, we compared Biogents gravid Aedes

Development of Vaccines against Emerging Mosquito-Vectored Arbovirus Infections.

Among emergent climate-sensitive infectious diseases, some mosquito-vectored arbovirus infections have epidemiological, social, and economic effects. Dengue virus (DENV), West Nile virus (WNV), and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) disease, previously common only in the tropics, currently pose a major risk to global health and are expected to expand dramatically in the near future if adequate containment measures are not implemented. The lack of safe and effective vaccines is critical as it seems likely that emerging mosquito-vectored arbovirus infections will be con-trolled only when effective and sa

Mosquito vector competence for dengue is modulated by insect-specific viruses.

Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus mosquitoes are the main vectors for dengue virus (DENV) and other arboviruses, including Zika virus (ZIKV). Understanding the factors that affect transmission of arboviruses from mosquitoes to humans is a priority because it could inform public health and targeted interventions. Reasoning that interactions among viruses in the vector insect might affect transmission, we analysed the viromes of 815 urban Aedes mosquitoes collected from 12 countries worldwide. Two mosquito-specific viruses, Phasi Charoen-like virus (PCLV) and Humaita Tubiacanga virus (HTV), were t

Interaction of Flavivirus with their mosquito vectors and their impact on the human health in the Americas.

Some of the major arboviruses with public health importance, such as dengue, yellow fever, Zika and West Nile virus are mosquito-borne or mosquito-transmitted Flavivirus. Their principal vectors are from the family Culicidae, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus being responsible of the urban cycles of dengue, Zika and yellow fever virus. These vectors are highly competent for transmission of many arboviruses. The genetic variability of the vectors, the environment and the viral diversity modulate the vector competence, in this context, it is important to determine which vector species is respon

Silica nanoparticle: a potential new insecticide for mosquito vector control.

Presently, there is a need for increased efforts to develop newer and effective methods to control mosquito vectors as the existing chemical and biological methods are not as effective as in earlier period owing to different technical and operational reasons. The use of nanomaterial products in various sectors of science including health increased during the last decade. We tested three types of nanosilica, namely lipophilic, hydrophilic and hydrophobic, to assess their larvicidal, pupicidal and growth inhibitor properties and also their influence on oviposition behaviour (attraction/deterrenc
