Parent Command Use and Child Compliance During Parent-Child Interactions Including Children With Down Syndrome.

Purpose This study investigated maternal and paternal command use and child compliance in children with Down syndrome during mother-child and father-child free-play interactions. We also examined child compliance to direct versus indirect commands, and the relationships between maternal command use, paternal command use, child compliance, and child speech and language abilities. Method Fifteen families including a mother, father, and child with Down syndrome participated. Mother-child and father-child dyads participated in free-play interactions. We coded overall parent command use, command ty

Rural perspectives on HIV/AIDS prevention: a comparative study of Thailand and Ghana.

The paper compares rural perspectives in Thailand and Ghana on the level of condom acceptance in sexual relations, willingness to test oneself for HIV before and in marriage and sources of information on HIV/AIDS. We also compared the policy approaches to combating HIV/AIDS in both countries. The results indicates that in the villages studied in Thailand, all single men and the majority of the single women were in favour of using condoms in sexual relations. This group also showed a positive attitude to HIV/AIDS test before and in marriage. However, married men in rural Thailand disapproved of

Novel approach to visualize the inter-dependencies between maternal sensitization, breast milk immune components and human milk oligosaccharides in the LIFE Child cohort.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have shown that specific components of breast milk, considered separately, are associated with disease status in the mother or the child using univariate analyses. However, very few studies have considered multivariate analysis approaches to evaluate the relationship between multiple breast milk components simultaneously. AIM: Here we aimed at visualizing breast milk component complex interactions in the context of the allergy status of the mother or the child. METHODS: Milk samples were collected from lactating mothers participating in the Leipziger Forschungsze

Parental catastrophizing about their child's chronic pain: are mothers and fathers different?

Preliminary evidence suggests that parental catastrophizing about their child's pain may be important in understanding both parental responses to their child's pain and the child's pain experience. However, little is known about potential differences between mothers and fathers. There were three aims of the present study addressing this lack of knowledge: (i) to investigate the three-factor structure of the German version of the Parental Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS-P) (Goubert et al., 2006) in mothers and fathers of children with chronic pain, (ii) to explore differences between mothers an

Children with physical handicaps and their mothers: the interrelation of social support, maternal adjustment, and child adjustment.

Examined the interrelation of maternal adjustment, mother-child interaction, and child adjustment in 29 families of children with spina bifida and without mental retardation and in 28 families of children without handicaps. A multivariate, ecological model proposed that adjustment of mother and child depends on the adaptiveness of maternal response to the stress of the physical handicap and on the ability of mothers to create an optimal caregiving environment through mother-child interaction. Analyses examining the relationships among maternal social support, maternal psychological adjustment,

The self-fulfilling prophecy as an intrafamily dynamic.

This research examined whether parents' and children's perceptions of one another have reciprocal self-fulfilling effects on each other's behavior. Parents and their adolescent children completed self-report surveys and engaged in dyadic videotaped interaction tasks. The surveys assessed mothers', fathers', and children's perceptions of their own and the other's hostility and warmth. Observers coded the videotaped interactions to assess the actual hostility and warmth exhibited by parents and children. Data from 658 mother-child dyads were consistent with the conclusion that children had a sel

"Waiting in Araf" research without consent: a Turkish mother's experience.

In this article, a nurse author from Turkey relates the anxiety and struggle that she experienced with the birth of her first baby when, for unknown reasons, the baby experienced acute rectal bleeding after birth. Unsatisfactory doctor-patient relations, abolishment of patient rights, suspicion of research without permission, and clinical iatrogenesis are discussed. The mother describes the 10 days she spent with her child in the hospital as "waiting in Araf." According to Middle Eastern culture, "Araf" is defined in the Koran as a place between Eden and Hell where people who have sinned are r

Parental Emotion Coaching and Child Emotion Regulation as Protective Factors for Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

We assessed linkages of mothers' emotion coaching and children's emotion regulation and emotion lability/negativity with children's adjustment in 72 mother-child dyads seeking treatment for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Dyads completed questionnaires and discussed emotion-related family events. Maternal emotion coaching was associated with children's emotion regulation, which in turn was related to higher mother-reported adaptive skills, higher child-reported internalizing symptoms, and lower child-reported adjustment. When children were high in emotion lability/negativity, mothers' emo

Mother-daughter relationships and child sexual abuse: a pilot study of 35 dyads.

In a pilot study, the authors examine features of mothers' relationships to their mothers, spouses, and daughters associated with their daughters' male-perpetrated child sexual abuse. Fifteen inner-city Latino mothers and daughters (ages 1-9 years), referred by child protective agencies for highly suspect or confirmed child sexual abuse, were compared to 20 matched control dyads. Significantly more case mothers than controls reported relational disturbances intergenerationally, including hostility toward their daughters. Mother-daughter relationships should be thoroughly assessed when evaluati

Aggression by Children Exposed to IPV: Exploring the Role of Child Depressive Symptoms, Trauma-Related Symptoms, & Warmth in Family Relationships.

Multi-informant reports of aggression by siblings in families with and without a history of IPV were compared. Associations between aggressive behavior and child depressive and trauma-related symptoms, as well as maternal and sibling warmth were also explored. Mothers, observers and the siblings themselves reported on aggressive behaviour. Mothers reported on child trauma-related symptoms while children provided self-report on depressive symptoms and mother-child and sibling warmth. The frequency of observed aggression did not differ across groups on average, although more sibling dyads expose

Investigating the links between parent-child interactions and context-specific electroencephalography asymmetry: Neurophysiology behind a frustrating task.

This study investigated the relations between parent-child interactions and infant brain activity in the context of a frustration eliciting task. Specifically, electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded and processed to provide alpha frontal asymmetry indicators linked with approach/avoidance emotions and motivation. These data were collected from 53 mother-infant dyads during baseline and a toy retraction task, with play interactions coded for caregiving quality indicators. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses indicated that infants of more sensitive/responsive mothers and th

Child care and social support modify the association between maternal depressive symptoms and early childhood behaviour problems: a US national study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence and patterns of modification effects of the sex of the child, social support, and childcare on the relation between maternal depressive symptoms and child behaviour problems at two developmental stages. DESIGN: Analyses are based on prospective longitudinal data from the study of early child care. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1216 families were drawn from 10 locations across the USA. Mothers were age 18 or older at the time of the study child's birth and had completed outcome measures for at least one follow up time point (24 months, 36 months). MAIN OUTCO

Mother-child closeness and adolescent structural neural networks: a prospective longitudinal study of low-income families.

Mother-child closeness, a mutually trusting and affectionate bond, is an important factor in shaping positive youth development. However, little is known about the neural pathways through which mother-child closeness is related to brain organization. Utilizing a longitudinal sample primarily from low-income families (N = 181; 76% African American youth and 54% female), this study investigated the associations between mother-child closeness at ages 9 and 15 years and structural connectivity organization (network integration, robustness, and segregation) at age 15 years. The assessment of mother

Child Maltreatment and Harsh Parenting: The Role of Maternal Chronic Relational Strains.

While prior research indicates that parents who were maltreated as children are more likely to engage in negative parenting behaviors, less is known about how mothers' social relationships may influence these practices. Yet parenting behaviors are influenced not only by the individual characteristics of the parent and child, but also by the social context that exists around the parent-child dyad. The aim of the current cross-sectional study was to test a model examining the effect of mothers' exposure to child maltreatment on harsh parenting practices, as observed in the lab, and the mediating

Mother's age, birth order and health status in a British national sample.

Using data from a longitudinal study of a national sample of British children, it is shown that mother's age and experience with child rearing are related to the attention paid to the child's health. Younger mothers, whose children are usually the first born, tend to be more concerned with health care facility use than are older mothers of children born subsequently. Younger mothers more often take their child to infant and toddler clinics, and are more likely to have their child immunized against the most threatening of childhood diseases. It is also the younger mothers who more often seek me

Characterizing Mother-Infant Dyadic Behaviors Following Infant Bids for Attention: Potential Mechanisms for Promoting Infant Attention Control and Language.

Maternal responsiveness to infant bids for attention predicts a variety of child outcomes including language, social-emotional, and cognitive functioning. Recently, a study demonstrated that greater maternal redirection (but not acceptance) of infant bids for attention predicted lower distractibility and, in turn, better receptive language outcomes in infants. To learn more about the potential basis for these relations, the current study took an in-depth look at differences in mother-infant dyadic behaviors as a function of whether mothers responded to infant bids for attention by redirecting

Maternal characteristics, ratings of child behavior, and mother-child interactions in families of children with externalizing disorders.

Relationships among maternal characteristics, ratings of child behavior, and observed mother-child interactions were examined in a sample of 40 4- to 12-year-old children with externalizing disorders. Mothers and children were observed in a task interaction and mothers provided self-reports of depressed mood, parenting self-esteem, marital satisfaction, social support, and life stress. Child behavior was rated by both mothers and teachers. Several significant correlations were found among observed mother and child behaviors and among maternal self-report measures. However, few significant rela

Mothers' Violence Experiences and Provision of Emotional Support Following Child Sexual Abuse.

Emotional support from a non-offending caregiver, often the child's mother, is theorized to help buffer children from the consequences of child sexual abuse (CSA). However, many mothers struggle to provide effective emotional support, suggesting it may be important to assess for factors related to mothers' abilities to support their child. CSA frequently occurs in families that have experienced other types of violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV), and many mothers have their own personal history of child abuse. This research examined the prevalence and influence of mothers' exper
