Biomechanical analysis and motion-capture technology have emerged as valuable tools for the objective assessment of human movement in physical therapy and rehabilitation. These technologies provide quantitative information on gait, balance, posture, joint kinematics, and functional performance, thereby supporting clinical decision-making and individualized rehabilitation. Despite increasing clinical adoption, evidence regarding their effectiveness across different rehabilitation populations remains heterogeneous. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the integration of biomechanical analysi

Markerless motion capture has the potential to enable biomechanical analyses without specialised, high-cost equipment. However, the comparability of many markerless motion capture frameworks with the most used marker-based method is limited. One reason for this is the lack of high-quality, biomechanically-informed datasets that are needed to train markerless models. This study aimed to inform the development of such a dataset by systematically analysing the agreement between a gold-standard marker set and a reduced number of markers to solve inverse kinematics (IK). We analysed the impact of d

Lower-limb motion monitoring is highly desired in various application scenarios ranging from rehabilitation to sports training. However, there still lacks a cost-effective, energy-saving, and computational complexity-reducing solution for this specific demand. Here, a motion capturing and energy harvesting hybridized lower-limb (MC-EH-HL) system with 3D printing is demonstrated. It enables low-frequency biomechanical energy harvesting with a sliding block-rail piezoelectric generator (S-PEG) and lower-limb motion sensing with a ratchet-based triboelectric nanogenerator (R-TENG). A unique S-PEG

The aim of this study was to validate the automatic tracking of facial landmarks in 3D image sequences. 32 subjects (16 males and 16 females) aged 18-35 years were recruited. 23 anthropometric landmarks were marked on the face of each subject with non-permanent ink using a 0.5mm pen. The subjects were asked to perform three facial animations (maximal smile, lip purse and cheek puff) from rest position. Each animation was captured by the 3D imaging system. A single operator manually digitised the landmarks on the 3D facial models and their locations were compared with those of the automatically

This study evaluates the agreement of marker-based and markerless (OpenCap) motion capture systems in assessing joint kinematics and kinetics during cycling. Markerless systems, such as OpenCap, offer the advantage of capturing natural movements without physical markers, making them more practical for real-world applications. However, the agreement of OpenCap with a marker-based system, particularly in cycling, remains underexplored. Ten participants cycled at varying speeds and resistances while motion data were recorded using both systems. Key metrics, including joint angles, moments, and jo

Estimating the position of the whole-body centre of mass (CoM) based on skin markers and anthropometric tables requires tracking the pelvis and lower body, which is impossible for wheelchair users due to occlusion. In this work, we present a method to track the user's whole-body CoM using visible markers affixed to the user and wheelchair where the user remains seated in their wheelchair, by expressing the pelvis and lower body segments in wheelchair coordinates. The accuracy of this method was evaluated on the anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) axes by comparing the projected CoM

In our previous research, we used clinical breast examination models instrumented with direct (normal) force sensors for training and assessment. A weakness of the normal force sensors is the ability to delineate, in detail, all of the performance measures we wish to understand. This study incorporated the use of newly developed shear force sensors to extend a framework for quantifying hands-on performance.

Objective gait assessment is essential for post-stroke rehabilitation monitoring, yet optical motion capture systems remain inaccessible to most clinical settings due to cost and infrastructure constraints. This study assessed the validity of the REEV SENSE IMU for measuring spatiotemporal gait parameters in post-stroke individuals and evaluated assistive device effects on measurement accuracy. Twenty chronic post-stroke participants were enrolled, and fourteen completed the study (ten without an assistive device, four using a cane) after applying pre-defined exclusion criteria (walking speed

This study used in-game markerless motion capture to develop a Super Learner ensemble model for predicting fastball velocity, with the aim of identifying key biomechanical contributors and evaluating generalisability across conferences. Data were collected from 322 NCAA Division I pitchers (ACC: n = 122; SEC: n = 200) between 2022 and 2024. The ensemble combined five algorithms-elastic net, random forest, support vector machines, gradient boosting, and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS)-and was trained using 10-fold cross-validation with internal-external validation by conference.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common, and re-injuries remain high despite advances in rehabilitation. Return-to-sport (RTS) assessments focus on strength, clinical and hop tests, and time-based criteria but often exclude objective movement quality measures. Biomechanical deficits during jump-landings can persist post-reconstruction, contributing to re-injury risk. Fatigue further alters neuromuscular control, potentially exacerbating risk-related movement patterns, yet most RTS tests are conducted in non-fatigued states. This study introduces a motion dataset of 2199 trials acr

Knee motion is altered in overuse injuries and chronic diseases like osteoarthritis. Yet, relying on marker-based motion capture in the lab limits our understanding of how knee motion continuously impacts joint health in the real world. Markerless optical motion capture improves clinical suitability, but space and time constraints remain barriers toward real-world assessments. Inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors have enabled continuous motion tracking outside the lab. In this study, we recorded thigh and shank-worn IMU data concurrently with marker-based and markerless optical motion captu

This study evaluates the utility of OpenCap (v0.3), a smartphone-based motion capture system, for performing gait analysis in patients with neurological disorders. We compared kinematic and kinetic gait parameters between 10 healthy controls and 10 patients with neurological conditions, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy. OpenCap captured 3D movement dynamics using two smartphones, with data processed through musculoskeletal modeling. The key findings indicate that the patient group exhibited significantly slower gait speeds (0.67 m/s vs. 1.10 m/s, p = 0.002), shorter st

With the internal volar locking plate (VLP) technique emerging as a preferred surgical approach, early post-surgery therapeutic exercises have shown promise in promoting wrist functionality after distal radial fractures (DRFs). The biomechanical microenvironment, particularly the role of biomechanical stimuli, plays a crucial role in guiding stem tissue formation at the fracture site. However, much less is known about how various hand exercises interact with the microenvironment and influence fracture healing outcomes. This study employed the Leap Motion Controller for markerless hand motion c

BACKGROUND: Dentists, including endodontists, frequently experience musculoskeletal disorders due to unfavourable working postures. Several measures are known to reduce the ergonomic risk; however, there are still gaps in the research, particularly in relation to dental work in the different oral regions (Quadrants 1-4).
METHODS: In this study (of a pilot character), a total of 15 dentists (8 male and 7 female) specialising in endodontics were measured while performing root canal treatments on a phantom head. These measurements took place in a laboratory setting using an inertial motion captu

INTRODUCTION: Exercise therapy is effective for various diseases, but one of the problems in rehabilitation is "continuity" and preventing quitting. This study assumes that objectively tracking changes in motor skills and providing feedback may contribute to the continuity of rehabilitation. Upper limb joint moments were estimated by our program using coordinates obtained through AI-based markerless motion capture. This study aimed to visualize and provide feedback on participants' assessments of their motor function to promote an understanding of changes in their motor function and to improve

Firefighting tasks are strenuous and injury-prone. This study developed a biomechanical dataset from 20 professional firefighters performing equipment carry, hose drag, body drag and stair climb, with and without gear, using motion capture and musculoskeletal simulations. Biomechanical loading and activity asymmetry were analysed. Gear effects were found to be task-dependent: trunk muscle activity increased across activities, hip joint reaction forces consistently rose and ankle torque increased only during body drag. In stair climb, ankle torque decreased with gear, while knee and hip torques
