Depth, motion, and static-flow perception at metaisoluminant color contrast.

Many experiments concerned with the role of color in depth and motion perception have applied isoluminant random-dot stereograms and cinematograms. The poor performance in the absence of luminance contrast has been associated with color-blindness of stereopsis and motion perception (Livingstone, M.S. & Hubel, D.H. (1987) J. Neurosci. 7, 3416-3468). Nevertheless, isoluminant stimuli are not fully accepted as appropriate tools in isolating central mechanisms (Logothetis, N.K., Schiller, P.H., Charles, E.R. & Hurlbert, A.C. (1990) Science 247, 214-217). In our experiments we use a broad luminance

The role of the ventral intraparietal area (VIP/pVIP) in the perception of object-motion and self-motion.

Retinal image motion is a composite signal that contains information about two behaviourally significant factors: self-motion and the movement of environmental objects. It is thought that the brain separates the two relevant signals, and although multiple brain regions have been identified that respond selectively to the composite optic flow signal, which brain region(s) perform the parsing process remains unknown. Here, we present original evidence that the putative human ventral intraparietal area (pVIP), a region known to receive optic flow signals as well as independent self-motion signals

Theoretical considerations on models of vestibular self-motion perception as inherent in computational frameworks of motion sickness.

This study examines self-motion perception incorporated into motion sickness models. Research on modeling self-motion perception and motion sickness has advanced independently, though both are thought to share neural mechanisms, making the construction of a unified model opportune. Models based on the Subjective Vertical Conflict (SVC) theory, a refinement of the neural mismatch theory, have primarily focused on motion sickness, with limited validation for self-motion perception. Emerging studies have begun evaluating the perceptual validity of these models, suggesting that some models can rep

The Importance of Spatiotemporal Information in Biological Motion Perception: White Noise Presented with a Step-like Motion Activates the Biological Motion Area.

Humans can easily recognize the motion of living creatures using only a handful of point-lights that describe the motion of the main joints (biological motion perception). This special ability to perceive the motion of animate objects signifies the importance of the spatiotemporal information in perceiving biological motion. The posterior STS (pSTS) and posterior middle temporal gyrus (pMTG) region have been established by many functional neuroimaging studies as a locus for biological motion perception. Because listening to a walking human also activates the pSTS/pMTG region, the region has be

The effect of occlusion therapy on motion perception deficits in amblyopia.

There is growing evidence for deficits in motion perception in amblyopia, but these are rarely assessed clinically. In this prospective study we examined the effect of occlusion therapy on motion-defined form perception and multiple-object tracking. Participants included children (3-10years old) with unilateral anisometropic and/or strabismic amblyopia who were currently undergoing occlusion therapy and age-matched control children with normal vision. At the start of the study, deficits in motion-defined form perception were present in at least one eye in 69% of the children with amblyopia. Th

Motion perception by a moving observer in a three-dimensional environment.

Perceiving three-dimensional object motion while moving through the world is hard: not only must optic flow be segmented and parallax resolved into shape and motion, but also observer motion needs to be taken into account in order to perceive absolute, rather than observer-relative motion. In order to simplify the last step, it has recently been suggested that if the visual background is stationary, then foreground object motion, computed relative to the background, directly yields absolute motion. A series of studies with immobile observers and optic flow simulating observer movement have pro

On the use of visual motion perception to assess magnocellular integrity.

It has been proposed, particularly in connection with dyslexia and schizophrenia, that motion perception can be used to assess magnocellular integrity. This suggestion is examined in this paper. The following observations are made: (1) motion information, i.e., information about direction and speed, is extracted at the cortical level, (2) the magnocellular system provides input to the motion selective cortical entities, and (3) so do the parvo- and koniocellular systems. Therefore, although the magnocellular system clearly has the ability to influence motion perception so do other parts of the

Effects of glaucoma and aging on photopic and scotopic motion perception.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of primary open-angle glaucoma and normal aging on visual sensitivity for targets known to bias responses from the magnocellular visual processing stream. METHODS: Contrast sensitivity was measured for the detection and direction discrimination of low-spatial-frequency (0.5 cyc/deg), drifting (4-24 Hz) sinusoidal gratings in 15 patients with glaucoma (mean age, 58.7 years), 14 age-matched control subjects (mean age 55.8 years), and 10 young control subjects (mean age, 24.4 years). As a control, sensitivity was measured for the detection of stationary stimuli. S

Motion sickness and perception: a reappraisal of the sensory conflict approach.

This review examines the role of activity and perceptual learning in motion sickness by means of a survey of the two kinds of recent research relevant to this topic. The first is a body of literature concerned not with motion sickness as such, but with perception of orientation and self-motion under the conditions of 'sensory conflict' which are thought to provoke motion sickness. The second consists of investigations into the prediction and prevention of motion sickness itself. A major weakness is identified in the methodologies employed in both types of research: namely, a neglect of the way

Sensitized rotatory motion perception and increased susceptibility to motion sickness in vestibular migraine: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vestibular migraine (VM) patients are ictally and interictally hypersensitive for self-motion and visual perception. Increased cortical excitability of the vestibular system represented by lowered motion perception thresholds might play an important role in the pathophysiology of VM. We aimed to compare motion perception thresholds and the vegetative response to rotatory motion, as well as the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during rotation in VM patients compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 28 female VM patients in the interictal st

Scene-relative object motion biases depth percepts.

An important function of the visual system is to represent 3D scene structure from a sequence of 2D images projected onto the retinae. During observer translation, the relative image motion of stationary objects at different distances (motion parallax) provides potent depth information. However, if an object moves relative to the scene, this complicates the computation of depth from motion parallax since there will be an additional component of image motion related to scene-relative object motion. To correctly compute depth from motion parallax, only the component of image motion caused by sel

Perception and discrimination of movement and biological motion patterns in fish.

Vision is of primary importance for many fish species, as is the recognition of movement. With the exception of one study, assessing the influence of conspecific movement on shoaling behaviour, the perception of biological motion in fish had not been studied in a cognitive context. The aim of the present study was therefore to assess the discrimination abilities of two teleost species in regard to simple and complex movement patterns of dots and objects, including biological motion patterns using point and point-light displays (PDs and PLDs). In two-alternative forced-choice experiments, in wh

Haptic signals enhance vestibular self-motion perception and reduces vestibular misperception.

This study investigated whether haptic contact modulates vestibular-induced self-motion perception and reduces perceptual errors caused by asymmetric vestibular stimulation. Fifteen healthy right-handed participants underwent asymmetric sinusoidal whole-body rotations about the vertical axis in darkness, consisting of half-cycles with equal amplitudes but different velocities, a paradigm known to induce errors in the localization of a previously memorized visual target. This error, quantified as the final position error (FPE), mainly results from reduced self-motion perception during the slowe

Earth-vertical motion perception assessment using an elevator: a feasibility study.

A feasible, inexpensive, rapid, and easy-to-use method to measure vestibular vertical movement perception is needed to assess the sacculus-mediated low-frequency otolith function of dizzy patients. To evaluate the feasibility of reaction time assessment in response to vertical motion induced by an elevator in healthy young individuals. We recorded linear acceleration/deceleration reaction times (LA-RT/LD-RT) of 20 healthy (13 female) subjects (mean age: 22 years ± 1 SD) as a measure of vertical vestibular motion perception. LA-RT/LD-RT were defined as the time elapsed from the start of elevato

Defective Human Motion Perception in Cervical Dystonia Correlates With Coexisting Tremor.

BACKGROUND: The ability to predict temporal outcome of body movement is abnormal in idiopathic dystonia and can be altered by cerebellar neuromodulation. Tremor in cervical dystonia might be associated with performance on motion perception tasks. METHODS: A total of 15 cervical dystonia patients with and 14 without tremor and 15 age-matched healthy participants estimated the termination of videos showing different movements (handwriting a sentence, ball reaching a target) after these were darkened at different time intervals. RESULTS: Cervical dystonia patients with tremor exhibited greater

Motion Perception and Form Discrimination in Extremely Preterm School-Aged Children.

This population-based study evaluated motion and form perception in 71 children born extreme premature (EPT; < 27 gestational weeks), aged 6.5 years, as compared to a matched group of 79 control children born at term. Motion and form perception were evaluated by motion coherence and form coherence tests. The EPT group showed a poorer performance on both tasks as compared to the control group. However, after controlling for IQ and visual acuity, the EPT group showed only a significant deficit in motion perception. No association was found between motion perception accuracy and gestational age,

Improving car drivers' perception of motorcycle motion through innovative headlight configurations.

The most frequent cause of motorcycle accidents occurs when another vehicle violates the motorcycle's right-of-way at an intersection. In addition to detection errors, misperception of the approaching motorcycle's speed and time-to-arrival is another driver error that accounts for these accidents, although this error has been studied less often. Such misperceptions have been shown to be related to the small size of motorcycles and to their small angular velocity when approaching. In two experiments we tested the impact of different motorcycle headlight configurations in various ambient lightin

Illusory Tactile Motion Perception: An Analog of the Visual Filehne Illusion.

We continually move our body and our eyes when exploring the world, causing our sensory surfaces, the skin and the retina, to move relative to external objects. In order to estimate object motion consistently, an ideal observer would transform estimates of motion acquired from the sensory surface into fixed, world-centered estimates, by taking the motion of the sensor into account. This ability is referred to as spatial constancy. Human vision does not follow this rule strictly and is therefore subject to perceptual illusions during eye movements, where immobile objects can appear to move. Her

Gaze patterns during perception of direction and gender from biological motion.

Humans can perceive many properties of a creature in motion from the movement of the major joints alone. However it is likely that some regions of the body are more informative than others, dependent on the task. We recorded eye movements while participants performed two tasks with point-light walkers: determining the direction of walking, or determining the walker's gender. To vary task difficulty, walkers were displayed from different view angles and with different degrees of expressed gender. The effects on eye movement were evaluated by generating fixation maps, and by analyzing the number
