The failure of incarceration as a response to drug offenses has resulted in new policies supporting community-based alternatives. One challenge has been finding appropriate housing for persons on probation and parole. Sober living houses (SLHs) are alcohol- and drug-free living environments that are increasingly being used as housing options for these individuals. The current study examined 6- and 12-month outcomes for 330 persons on probation or parole who entered 49 SLHs. Residents in 22 houses (n = 149 individuals) were randomly assigned to receive a "Motivational Interviewing Case Manageme

Despite the increase in the number of drug treatment centers, patients with drug addicts have been increasing without the improvement of treatment in Afghanistan. This study aimed to examine the associations of the completion of drug addiction treatment with motivational interviewing (MI) and other factors among male drug users in Afghanistan. Subjects were patients admitted to Jangalak Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2014 and 2015. Systematic sampling and supplementary sampling were applied. The records of 327 males aged 18 to 54 years were collected from those of 3,373 male inpatients. Com

INTRODUCTION: Nearly 2% of youths suffer from chronic migraine or chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). A contributing factor in approximately 20%-50% of these youths is medication overuse, which involves taking analgesics three or more times per week for three months. The objective of this study was to test motivational interviewing (MI) as an approach to promote adherence to recommendations regarding not only analgesic overuse but also other aspects of treatment plans.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted comparing the experimental condition (standard of care clinic-based tr

This article reviews the research support for Motivational interviewing (MI) so that practitioners can make informed decisions about the value and applicability of MI in their clinical work. We highlight the evidence from the three published meta-analyses of MI and a recent meta-analysis that we completed. MI is significantly (10%-20%) more effective than no treatment and generally equal to other viable treatments for a wide variety of problems ranging from substance use (alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drugs) to reducing risky behaviors and increasing client engagement in treatment. Over the past decade, motivational interviewing has been used by health professionals to promote health behavior changes and help individuals increase their motivation or "readiness" to change. This paper describes a preliminary study that evaluated the feasibility of motivational interviewing as a component of New Moves, a school-based obesity prevention program. New Moves is a program for inactive adolescent high school girls who are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight due to low levels of physical activity. Throughout the 18-week pilot study, 41 girls, age 16 to 18 years, participa

AIMS: To examine the effectiveness of brief behavioral interventions adapting the principles and techniques of Motivational Interviewing (MI) to four behavioral domains: substance abuse, smoking, HIV risk and diet/exercise.
DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of 29 randomized trials of MI interventions. Data on methodological quality were extracted and tabulated. Between-group behavior change effect sizes and confidence intervals were calculated for each study.
FINDINGS: Due to varying intervention time lengths, targeted problem behaviors, settings and interventionists' backgrounds and

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse remains a major global public health concern. Brief motivational interviewing (BMI) is a time-efficient, patient-centered intervention for reducing hazardous and harmful alcohol use.
METHODS: This systematic review synthesized evidence from 32 randomized controlled trials published between 2015 and 2025 evaluating BMI interventions for alcohol misuse in adults. Studies involving university students, emergency department patients, individuals with psychiatric or medical comorbidities, and socially vulnerable populations were included.
RESULTS: BMI was generally asso

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the development and user evaluation of a web-delivered oral health behavior change intervention grounded in the spirit and methods of motivational interviewing (MI).
METHODS: The current project builds on prior research in which MI delivered by oral health professionals was found to be efficacious in promoting changes in oral health behavior. The incorporation of MI features into a web-based adaptation was guided by input from key stakeholders (dental patients, dental hygienists, and dentists) and feedback obtained during an iterative process of testing with pa

Motivational interviewing (MI) is gaining traction in veterinary medicine as an evidence-based approach for engaging clients in conversations that strengthen their intrinsic motivation to change behaviours that affect the welfare of animals in their care. While MI has a substantial and well-established evidence base across human healthcare and related fields, the veterinary evidence base remains small and is currently limited by study design challenges, inconsistent fidelity measurement, and outcome measures that rarely extend beyond short-term changes in communication behaviour. Existing meth

BACKGROUND: Families are an important setting for the prevention of childhood overweight and obesity, as they are one of the key places where healthy behaviors are learned and reinforced. However, involving families in prevention programs, especially those affected by social disadvantage, has proved to be difficult.
AIM: To evaluate the implementation process of a family-based motivational interviewing intervention to promote healthy weight development in a socially disadvantaged neighborhood.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included families with at least one child aged 3 to 10, at least 50

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) impose escalating demands on community-based primary healthcare (PHC) systems globally. Motivational interviewing (MI) is effective but difficult to scale due to resource and training constraints. We conducted the first pragmatic trial evaluating whether an automated chatbot operationalising MI principles could improve lifestyle behaviours when integrated into routine PHC settings. This pragmatic, open-label, multicentre randomised controlled trial across three Hong Kong PHC facilities randomised 627 adults aged 45-75 with or at risk of hypertension or diabetes

BACKGROUND: Having regular screening tests largely depends on motivational factors. Motivational interviewing (MI) facilitates the movement through the stages of the transtheoretical model of change.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of face-to-face and phone call MI on cervical cancer screening.
METHODS: This experimental study was conducted on 150 eligible women referred to health centers in Tabriz, Iran. The women were assigned into 3 groups (face-to-face MI, phone MI, or control) using blocked randomization. The face-to-face MI group participated in 3 weekly grou

PURPOSE: Hypertension is a common comorbidity among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Despite the proven benefit of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in this population, poor medication adherence is prevalent, resulting in higher complications and mortality rate. Motivational interviewing (MoI) has demonstrated effectiveness in improving medication adherence and identifying barriers. This study aimed to assess and identify patient-reported barriers to adherence to ACEI/ARB from

BACKGROUND: A conceptual framework is needed to understand injured workers' decision-making and inform evidence-based interventions to address behavior change regarding return-to-work (RTW). The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) can help with understanding how an injured worker's characteristics can generate behavior change while Motivational Interviewing (MI) can help facilitate behavior change.
OBJECTIVE: This theoretical paper provides an overview of how MOHO and MI can be applied and integrated in occupational rehabilitation. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) evaluate MOHO as a fram

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune disorders and neurodegenerative disorders take a physical and emotional toll on patients that undergo therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) treatments. Previous literature has shown that these patients may feel a greater sense of self-burden. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a technique used in various settings that has the potential to decrease feelings of self-burden. MI for patients who receive TPE has not been tested. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of MI in patients with a neurodegenerative diagnosis (eg, transverse myelitis, myasthenia gravis, mult
