[Glutamatergic neurotransmitter system in regulation of the gastrointestinal tract motor activity].

The review include actual facts, demonstrating high probability of glutamatergic neurotransmitter system role in the regulation of the gastrointestinal tract motor activity. These facts suggest significant role of the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system dysfunction in forming motor activity disorders of the digestive tract, including in patients in critical condition. The analysis is based on results of multiple experimental and clinical researches of glutamic acid and other components of the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system in central nervous system and autonomic nervous system (with t

Volitional control of neural activity relies on the natural motor repertoire.

BACKGROUND: The results from recent brain-machine interface (BMI) studies suggest that it may be more efficient to use simple arbitrary relationships between individual neuron activity and BMI movements than the complex relationship observed between neuron activity and natural movements. This idea is based on the assumption that individual neurons can be conditioned independently regardless of their natural movement association. RESULTS: We tested this assumption in the parietal reach region (PRR), an important candidate area for BMIs in which neurons encode the target location for reaching m

Modulation of motor cortex activity when observing rewarding and punishing actions.

Interpreting others' actions is essential for understanding the intentions and goals in social interactions. Activity in the motor cortex is evoked when we see another person performing actions, which can also be influenced by the intentions and context of the observed action. No study has directly explored the influence of reward and punishment on motor cortex activity when observing others' actions, which is likely to have substantial relevance in different social contexts. In this experiment, EEG was recorded while participants watched movie clips of a person performing actions that led to

Abnormal motor activity during anaesthesia in a dog: a case report.

Seizures or convulsions that occur during anaesthesia in veterinary patients are infrequently reported in the literature. Consequently, the incidence of such events is unknown. Several drugs commonly used in clinical veterinary anaesthesia have been shown to induce epileptiform activity in both human clinical patients and experimental candidates. The present case report describes convulsions in a four-year old male Bernese mountain dog during maintenance of anaesthesia with isoflurane after premedication with acepromazine and methadone followed by co-induction with propofol and ketamine. The d

Neuronal and network activity in networks of cultured spinal motor neurons.

This is the first report of multielectrode recordings from networks of cultured motor neurons. Neurons isolated from the ventral horns of spinal cords of E15 rats were cultured on MED64 probes. The majority of the neurons in the cultures are positive for neurofilament, choline acetyltransferase, and Hb9, characteristics of motor neurons. The activity of the motor neuron network is characterized by spiking of individual cells as well as spontaneous, synchronized bursts involving all active electrodes. Both spiking and network bursts are stimulated by GABA antagonists and acetylcholine, and are

Oscillatory cortical activity during a motor task in a deafferented patient.

Little is known about the influence of the afferent peripheral feedback on the sensorimotor cortex activation. To answer this open question we investigated the alpha and beta band task-related spectral power decreases (TRPow) in the deafferented patient G.L. and compared the results to those of six healthy subjects. The patient has been deafferented up to the nose for 24 years but her motor fibers are unaffected and she can perform complex motor tasks under visual control. We recorded EEG (58 scalp positions) as well as the exerted force during a visuomotor task. The subjects had to maintain i

Motor activity rhythms of forced desynchronized rats subjected to restricted feeding.

Although light is the strongest zeitgeber for the circadian pacemaker, other stimuli can also produce entrainment. In the rat, periodic restricted feeding (RF) is a weak stimulus that may act as a zeitgeber. We tested the effect of RF on the motor activity rhythms of rats subjected to forced dissociation. In this situation two components, supposed to be related with the ventrolateral and dorsomedial areas of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, are detected in their motor activity. One component is entrained to the external light-dark cycle (Light Dependent Component, LDC) and thus has the same period

Normalizing motor-related brain activity: subthalamic nucleus stimulation in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether therapeutic unilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) leads to normalization in the pattern of brain activation during movement execution and control of movement extent. METHODS: Six patients with PD were imaged off medication by PET during performance of a visually guided tracking task with the DBS voltage programmed for therapeutic (effective) or subtherapeutic (ineffective) stimulation. Data from patients with PD during ineffective stimulation were compared with a group of 13 age-matched contr

Activity-driven synaptic and axonal degeneration in canine motor neuron disease.

The role of neuronal activity in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease is largely unknown. In this study, we examined the effects of increasing motor neuron activity on the pathogenesis of a canine version of inherited motor neuron disease (hereditary canine spinal muscular atrophy). Activity of motor neurons innervating the ankle extensor muscle medial gastrocnemius (MG) was increased by denervating close synergist muscles. In affected animals, 4 wk of synergist denervation accelerated loss of motor-unit function relative to control muscles and decreased motor axon conduction velociti

Methylphenidate-induced motor activity in rats: modulation by melatonin and vasopressin.

Methylphenidate (MPH), a dopamine (DA) reuptake inhibitor, is well known to enhance motor activity, in part depending on the time of its application during the light-dark cycle. Moreover, after MPH administration, the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial axis including the neuropeptide vasopressin (AVP) was found influenced. Both the latter and behavioural effects of central AVP can also be modulated by the pineal gland with its light-dark-dependent activity. The present study was performed to investigate whether the pineal gland, its hormone melatonin (Mel), and AVP are involved in the MPH-evoked sti

Correlation between motor improvements and altered fMRI activity after rehabilitative therapy.

Motor rehabilitation therapy is commonly employed after strokes, but outcomes are variable and there is little specific information about the changes in brain activity that are associated with improved function. We performed serial functional MRI (fMRI) on a group of seven patients receiving a form of rehabilitation therapy after stroke in order to characterize functional changes in the brain that correlate with behavioural improvements. Patients were scanned while performing a hand flexion-extension movement twice before and twice after a two-week home-based therapy programme combining restra

Effects of chronic episodic hypoxia on monoamine metabolism and motor activity.

Chronic episodic hypoxia produces a wide array of cardiovascular dysfunctions in rats, including increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and sympathetic nerve activity. The action of episodic hypoxia might be related to low oxygen itself (hypoxemia) and/or combined with low CO2 (hypocapnia) resulting from hyperventilation. It is unknown whether or not the cardiovascular abnormalities are related to alterations in the central nervous system (CNS) that may be manifested as neurotransmitter and/or behavioral changes. In this study, we investigated effects of episodic eucapnic and hypocapnic hypo

Antral control of gallbladder cyclic motor activity in the fasting state.

The hypothesis that gastric antrum controls the phasic contractions of gallbladder cyclic motor activity in the fasting state was tested. Gallbladder, gastric, and small bowel motor and myoelectric activity was recorded by strain gauge transducers and bipolar electrodes. Gallbladder pressure was measured manometrically by a surgically implanted intraluminal catheter. After control recordings for 4 to 6 weeks, antrectomy and gastroduodenostomy were performed. Six weeks later, bilateral truncal vagotomy was performed in each dog. Recordings were made after each surgical procedure. In the control

Sphincter of Oddi motor activity in patients with anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction.

Sphincter of Oddi motor activity was investigated in seven patients with an anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction and in six controls by endoscopic manometry under fluoroscopy. Characteristic phasic wave activity was observed in the sphincter segment in both groups. Amplitude of the phasic contractions was significantly higher in the disease group than in controls (100.8 +/- 14.1 mm Hg vs. 55.2 +/- 4.3 mm Hg, p less than 0.02). Although those with the anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction had a longer common channel (15-30 mm), the length of the sphincter segment with the phasic wave activity

Vagus nerve stimulation to improve post-stroke motor function and activity.

RATIONALE: After a stroke, many people experience persistent upper extremity (UE) motor impairments (that is, deficits in strength, coordination, and muscle tone), which can limit activities such as reaching, grasping, and manipulation. Despite conventional rehabilitation, recovery of UE function often remains limited. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), applied invasively or non-invasively (transcutaneously), has been proposed as an adjunct to rehabilitation to enhance neuroplasticity and improve motor outcomes after stroke. While early trials have reported mixed findings, the overall effectivenes

Brain-wide spatial mapping of oscillatory activity during naturalistic motor behavior.

Understanding oscillatory neural activity associated with motor behavior is greatly contributing to the development of neuroprosthetic systems, robotic interfaces, and advanced neurorehabilitation techniques. Most current knowledge about movement-specific patterns of cortical activity is derived from laboratory experiments using highly standardized, repetitive, and often meaningless movements that are very distinct from natural motor behavior. This is characterized by frequent task switching, diverse kinematics, and endogenous motivation. Whether observed patterns of movement-related neural ac

Video-Based Activity Recognition for Automated Motor Assessment of Parkinson's Disease.

Over the last decade, video-enabled mobile devices have become ubiquitous, while advances in markerless pose estimation allow an individual's body position to be tracked accurately and efficiently across the frames of a video. Previous work by this and other groups has shown that pose-extracted kinematic features can be used to reliably measure motor impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). This presents the prospect of developing an asynchronous and scalable, video-based assessment of motor dysfunction. Crucial to this endeavour is the ability to automatically recognise the class of an action
