Congenital Lateral Palatal Synechia Associated With Cleft Palate: A Case Report With Long-Term Follow-Up and Review of the Literature.

Lateral palatal synechiae are rare congenital adhesions running from the free borders of the cleft palate to the lateral parts of the tongue or the oral cavity floor, typically found in cleft palate lateral synechiae syndrome. We present a case of congenital lateral palatal synechia associated with a cleft palate that we treated and followed up for 10 years. We present the long-term prognosis. We also discuss variations in intraoral synechiae associated with cleft palate and the etiology of lateral palatal synechiae through a literature review.

A veil in the oral cavity: report of two cases of oral synechiae.

An oral synechia is an adhesion between the maxilla and the mandible; these adhesions can be found at various locations in the oral cavity. The presence of oral synechiae associated with cleft palate represents a rare congenital deformity. Oral synechiae with cleft palate can have serious implications for airway management and feeding in babies, and hence requires early intervention to reduce morbidity. Two cases of congenital oral synechiae accompanied by cleft palate, in which the synechiae veiled the oral cavity restricting a detailed intraoral examination, are reported here.

[New oral manifestations of Branchio-oculo-facial syndrome. Case report].

The branchio-oculo-facial syndrome is a dominant autosomic condition with variable expressivity that affects particularly the facial and neck structures by an inadequate development of the first and second branchial arch. It is characterized by malformations of eyes and ears, with distinct facial characteristics. It is associated with alterations in TFAP2A gene. We present a patient with 9 years of age with phenotype of the branchio-oculo-facial syndrome and the presence of 2 new oral manifestations, the bifid uvula and the tongue with partial central cleft, not yet described in this clinical

The Impact of Genetics on Craniofacial Dysplasias and Consequent Oral Malformations-Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diseases affecting the craniofacial skeleton are normally associated with disturbances in the regulation of cellular differentiation, the development of bone structures, and changes in bone density and ossification. Thus, the objective of this integrative review is to evaluate the published scientific literature from the last 8 years concerning the impact of genetics on some craniofacial dysplasias. Our aim covers the identification of oral cavity alterations to those dysplasias, through the most common orofacial manifestations. Three dysplasias were selected to be part

Cleft Lip With Ankyloblepharon Filiforme Adnatum: A Case Report.

Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum (AFA) is a rare, benign congenital anomaly. Notably, it is characterized by the adhesion of the ciliary edges of the upper and lower eyelids at the trabecular line. AFA is usually a solitary malformation of sporadic occurrence; however, it can occur in conjunction with other congenital diseases. Herein, we report a case of cleft lip with AFA. A patient was referred to the ophthalmology department of our hospital. The ophthalmic diagnosis was AFA in both the eyes. The left eye was observed to have a fibrous adhesion in the center, and she underwent surgery to e

The oral manifestations of Apert syndrome.

As part of an ongoing study of 119 patients with the Apert syndrome, extensive data were available for the analysis of oral manifestations, including mouth shape, lip posture, palatal morphology, dental anomalies, and malocclusion. Findings included a characteristic trapezoidal-shaped mouth. Cleft soft palate or bifid uvula was found in approximately 75%. A Byzantine-arch shaped palate was recorded in almost all patients. Dental anomalies included severely delayed eruption, ectopic eruption, and shovel-shaped incisors. Malocclusion tended to be severe with mesial molar occlusion, mandibular ov

Oral aspects of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

Oral findings in 45 patients with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome living in The Netherlands are compared with those from the literature. The main non-dental findings were thin upper lip, small oral opening, pouting lower lip, retro/micrognathia, and apparently higher arched, narrow palate. Cleft uvula, cleft palate, or, rarely, cleft upper lip can be part of the syndrome. Timing of the eruption of deciduous and permanent dentition is normal. Sixty-two percent of patients have malpositioned, crowded teeth. Marked caries was found in 36% and was possibly caused by problems in dental care due to the sm

Orocraniodigital (Juberg-Hayward) syndrome with growth hormone deficiency.

A boy is described with Juberg-Hayward syndrome. In addition to unilateral cleft lip and palate, bilateral absent thumbs, anomalous carpal bones, and deformity of the radial heads, there were other skeletal abnormalities. The patient showed clinical and biochemical evidence of growth hormone deficiency which appears to be an integral part of the syndrome.

Mouth Breathing and Craniofacial Development in Children: A Systematic Narrative Review and Clinical Implications.

Background/Objectives: Mouth breathing in childhood has been associated with alterations in craniofacial growth and the development of the maxillofacial complex. However, arguments persist regarding the scale of this relationship and its clinical consequences because of the diverse nature of the available evidence. This review aims to evaluate the evidence on the relationship between mouth breathing and maxillofacial development in children. Methods: A systematic narrative review with qualitative synthesis was conducted using databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Cochrane Library, Google S

Subglossopalatal membrane.

A newborn who experienced respiratory distress just after birth had an oral web that extended from the floor of the mouth anterior to the tongue up to the hard palate. The membrane was slit in the midline to facilitate air exchange. The patient did well without intubation, and the web was resected. To our knowledge, this is the second case of subglossopalatal membrane to be reported. Embryologic and anatomic considerations, along with a review of the literature, are presented.

Oral manifestations in Urbach--Wiethe disease (lipoglycoproteinosis; lipoid proteinosis; hyalinosis cutis et mucosae).

The oral manifestations in 27 patients with Urbach--Wiethe disease (UWD) discovered in Northern Sweden are described. The oral regions most frequently affected are the lips, the back of the tongue, the frenulum of the tongue, the palate and the back wall of the pharynx. The general impression is that older patients usually have more marked manifestations than younger, indicating that the oral lesions may become more severe with increasing age. Histopathologically, the disorder is essentially a microangiopathy in which the walls of small blood vessels are thick and PAS-positive, indicating the

Mouth breathing children have cephalometric patterns similar to those of adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether mouth breathing children present the same cephalometric patterns as patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). METHOD: Cephalometric variables were traced and measured on vertical lateral cephalometric radiographs. The cephalometric measurements of 52 mouth and 90 nose breathing children were compared with apneic patients. The children had not undergone adenoidectomy or tonsillectomy and had not had or were not receiving orthodontic or orthopedic treatment. RESULTS: Mouth breathing children showed same cephalometric pattern observed in patients wit
