Neoplasms of retromolar trigone have important peculiarities due to their spatial relationships with the surrounding structures. Tumours that involve this area can extend to nearby muscles; adipose spaces; and other anatomic structures, such as the soft palate, the tonsillar fossa, the parapharyngeal space, and the floor of the mouth. In spite of a relatively quick diagnosis, the real extent of these tumours is typically underestimated at clinical examination. Our purpose was to propose a systematic approach to the use of multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions to evaluate normal retro

Malignant neoplasms of the mucosa and minor salivary glands of the paranasal sinuses may involve the skin by direct extension. When a tumor appears on the overlying skin, these sinuses should be considered as a possible site of origin. Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses arise from minor salivary glands. They can infiltrate overlying skin and easily be confused with a primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma. Malignant melanomas of the paranasal sinuses are clinically very aggressive. They are often amelanotic, and this may lead to an incorrect histopathologic diagnosis. Hence,

BACKGROUND: Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a deceptively bland spindle cell neoplasm with malignant potential, most commonly arising in the extremities and trunk, and limited to at least110 cases in the head and neck. This report describes the first molecularly confirmed LGFMS of the floor of the mouth demonstrating a FUS::CREB3L2 gene fusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male presented with a painless floor of mouth mass of 1-year duration that was clinically suspected to represent a ranula. The mass was subjected to excisional biopsy. Histological examination was salient for

Giant fibrovascular polyps (FVP) are relatively rare benign neoplasm of the upper part of the esophagus. Without previous history, their diagnosis might be difficult as the endoscopic findings are sometimes misinterpreted. The present report describes a case, in which the patient regurgitated his giant polypoid mass into his mouth and captured it between his teeth and buccal surface until the emergency endoscopic removal. Although the adequate therapy for these lesions is mainly the open surgical resection, most often via cervical esophagotomy, in our case the polyp was removed successfully by

This is a report of a patient with the CRST syndrome, a mild variant of scleroderma consisting of calcinosismraynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Typical changes of scleroderma were present in the extremities, esophagus, duodenum and colon. In addition, there was a polypoid filling defect in a colonic diverticulum due to a fecalith. The radiologic appearance at first resembled a colonic neoplasm, although its location within a diverticulum and its speckled appearance suggested the possibility of a fecalith. This was confirmed at colonoscopy, which disclosed numerous wide-mo

BACKGROUND: Ectopic odontogenic tumours are rare and difficult to diagnose. Consequently, they are occasionally misdiagnosed as other tumours and overtreated. Dentinogenic ghost cell tumours (DGCTs) are odontogenic neoplasms characterised by a CTNNB1 mutation, ghost cell appearance, and dentinoid-like calcification. Herein, we present a case of ectopic DGCT on the floor of a patient's mouth, providing reliable clinicopathological and genetic evidence of its odontogenicity for the first time.

BACKGROUND: Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by increased risk of developing malignant neoplasms, particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma. This study aims to ascertain the extent to which adolescents and guardians/parents of children with FA are aware of their oral cancer risks and assess their ability to perform mouth examination (ME).
PROCEDURE: A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with FA (between 6 and 16 years) and their parents. A total of 45 patients, 19 children and 26 adolescents, participated in the study. Among children less than 12 yea

Review of the world literature revealed 16 cases of intraoral rhabdomyomas. Thirteen additional cases of intraoral rhabdomyomas from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology are reported. The neoplasm occurred principally in adults (mean age 56 years), and the male-female ratio was greater than 2:1. The majority of cases occurred in the floor of the mouth, followed by the soft palate, tongue, and buccal mucosa. Recurrences occurred in four (30 percent) cases, and there was one multiple recurrence. One residual tumor, the result of incomplete surgical removal was noted. Although the

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant epithelial neoplasm of the salivary glands. MECs of the mouth floor are rare, with only a few cases reported. Here we report a MEC of the mouth floor in a 55-year-old woman. Since several studies have shown that hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-synthesizing enzymes are often increased in malignant tumors compared to benign counterpart tissues, we used western blotting to compare the protein levels of cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST) in a mouth floor MEC to adjacent ben

BACKGROUND: The aim of oral cancer surgery is tumor removal within clear margins of healthy tissue: the latter definition in the literature, however, may vary between 1 and 2 cm, and should be intended in the three dimensions, which further complicates its precise measurement. Moreover, the biological behavior of tongue and floor of mouth cancer can be unpredictable and often eludes the previously mentioned safe surgical margins concept due to the complexity of tongue anatomy, the intricated arrangements of its intrinsic and extrinsic muscle fibers, and the presence of rich neurovascular and l

PURPOSE: To investigate a unique procedure of joined transoral and retropharyngeal high cervical approach (JTRC) without mandibulectomy for treating upper cervical neoplasm involving both C2 and C3.
METHOD: A 23-year-old male patient had neoplasma involving C2 and C3 that caused pathologic fracture of C2 and bony destruction of C3. The neoplasm excision and cervical spine reconstruction were performed through JTRC approach without splitting up the mandible. In this approach, there were two surgery windows that could be applied in turns by closing or opening the mouth to gain an ideal exposure

Many cases of oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal neoplasms without diffuse infiltration of the larynx or mandible cannot be treated effectively by a transoral approach. In such cases a lateral and/or median translingual pharyngotomy can permit effective surgical therapy. However, these surgical techniques require greater effort and violate uninvolved tissues, such as the lip, mandible and floor of the mouth. In contrast to this, a suprahyoid pharyngotomy can be a simple and precise approach to the oropharynx and hypopharynx, and provide the shortest distance to the pathological process. The exce

Synovial chondromatosis is a benign locally aggressive neoplasm that rarely affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This report describes a case of synovial chondromatosis in a 34-year-old woman presenting TMJ pain and mandibular deviation with limited mouth opening. Imaging examinations revealed multiple calcified masses within the TMJ. During surgery, cartilage fragments were easily detached. On histological examination, multiple coalescent nodules of hyaline cartilage with areas of endochondral ossification and mild cell pleomorphism were observed, together with a significant giant cell

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the sublingual gland is an extremely rare neoplasm. The clinicopathological characteristics of ACC are slow-growing swelling with or without ulceration, perineural spread, local recurrence, and distant metastasis. This report describes a 58-year-old male who had a slowly growing swelling without ulceration on the right side of the mouth floor that had been present for 1 month. In a radiological examination, the mass showed multilocular cystic features and no bony or tongue muscle invasion. No enlarged cervical lymph nodes were detected. Excisional biopsy and h

Oral lesions are common in women and children with HIV/AIDS and may decrease the overall quality of life in these patients because of pain, dry mouth, and difficulty in eating. An oral cavity screening is an easy, noninvasive, quick, and inexpensive procedure that provides nurses with invaluable information about the need for referral, treatment, and health education. Nurses can use the information obtained from a careful oral screening to decrease the symptoms experienced with oral lesions and optimize a patient's ability to chew and enjoy food. Common oral manifestations of HIV infection inc

In the current study of the prognosis of all patients (N equals 70) with squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of floor of mouth in Norway during the period 1963 to 1972, the authors found that patients with Rhesus (Rh) (D)-negative blood group had significantly poorer prognosis (mean 5-year survival, 8%) than patients with Rh (D)-positive blood group (5-year survival, 30%) (P equals 0.04). This extends the authors' previous observations in another group of oral cancer patients. The authors do not know the explanation for this association. However, the Rh gene locus is located on the short arm of chr

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an infrequent malignant neoplasm that originates most commonly in the major and minor salivary glands of the head and neck region. This study provides new information on head and neck ACC with cervical lymph node metastasis. Of 616 patients who underwent primary tumour resection from 1995 to 2008 in the authors' hospital, 62 cases with cervical lymph node metastasis were analyzed. The general incidence of cervical lymph node metastasis in ACC was approximately 10%. The base of tongue, mobile tongue and mouth floor were the most frequent sites of lymph nodes me
