Efficacy of propolis-based mouthwashes on dental plaque and gingival inflammation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review of randomized clinical trials aimed to evaluate the available evidence regarding the efficacy of propolis-based mouthwash on dental plaque and gingival inflammation. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched up to November 2019. Clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of propolis mouthwashes compared with chlorhexidine (CHX) were included. The primary outcomes comprised dental plaque and/or gingival inflammation. Two authors assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane tool. Due to marked heterogeneity of the available data, stu

Radiation-induced mucositis: a randomized clinical trial of micronized sucralfate versus salt & soda mouthwashes.

Oral mucositis is one of the major toxicities caused by radiation therapy (RT) treatments to the head and neck. The clinical efficacy of sucralfate (Carafate R) mouthwash for head and neck cancer patients (HNC) is not consistent across studies. In this study, it was hypothesized that if the particles in the original sucralfate suspension were micronized (i.e., < or = 25 microns) then the coating action of the mouthwash in the oral cavity would be enhanced. The purpose of this pilot study was to compare the efficacy of micronized sucralfate (Carafate R) mouthwash and salt & soda mouthwash in te

Effect of Adjunctive Use of Commercial Daily Mouthwashes on Periodontal Health: An Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Effective oral hygiene using different mechanical means is mainly dependent on the patient. Mouthwashes containing antimicrobial agents have been developed to be used as an adjunct to mechanical supragingival plaque control. The aim of this umbrella review is to evaluate and compare the long-term efficacy of commonly used, commercially available daily mouthwashes in plaque control and gingival inflammation. METHODS: The current umbrella review was conducted in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions using the PICOS format. The search w

Effectiveness of Mouthwashes in Managing Oral Diseases and Conditions: Do They Have a Role?

Antimicrobial mouthwashes are considered to reduce dental plaque biofilm and thus the potential to prevent plaque-induced oral diseases, particularly periodontal diseases. The effectiveness of mouthwashes relates to this antiplaque role, as well as, their tooth-whitening potential and ability to mask/mange malodour (halitosis). There is also a growing interest in the use of mouthwashes as an adjunctive measure in post surgical and post-dental care, while the COVID-19 pandemic has given a new lease of life to mouthwashes as an oral antispetic that may be useful in reducing the oral viral load.

Effect of beverages and mouthwashes on the hardness of polymers used in intraoral prostheses.

PURPOSE: The mechanical properties of acrylic resins used in intraoral prostheses may be altered by frequent exposure to liquids such as beverages and mouthwashes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of thermocycling and liquid immersion on the hardness of four brands of acrylic resins commonly used in removable prostheses (Onda Cryl, QC-20, Clássico, Lucitone). MATERIALS AND METHODS: For each brand of resin, seven specimens were immersed in each of six solutions (coffee, cola, red wine, Plax-Colgate, Listerine [LI], Oral B), and seven more were placed in artificial saliva (control). In vitro toxicity assessment of mouthwashes in the pollen tube growth test: first results.

Mouthwashes are widespread used to treat halitosis or minor oral infections. Adverse effects of mouthwashes were recognized, e.g. desquamation of the oral mucosa and stomatitis. The acute toxicity of mouthwashes was tested in an in vitro system, the pollen tube growth test (PTG-test). In the PTG-test the acute toxicity of mouthwashes exceeds the toxic effect of alcohol. Consumers should be informed about the number and amounts of mouthwash ingredients, and their toxic potential. These declarations would provide the basis for testing the carcinogenic effects of mouthwashes.

Effectiveness of Expressed Breast Milk Mouthwash for Infant Oral Hygiene.

Background/Objectives: Maintaining oral hygiene in infants in neonatal and pediatric intensive care is essential for preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Chlorhexidine (CHX) is widely used in adults but its safety and efficacy in infants remain uncertain, and it is not recommended for children under 6 years due to rinsing difficulties and mucosal irritation risk. Expressed breast milk (EBM), rich in immunological and antimicrobial components, has been explored as a biologically appropriate alternative. This review synthesizes evidence on EBM effectiveness and safety and contextual

Effect of Diclofenac Mouthwash on Postoperative Pain after Periodontal Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used drugs for the management of pain. Oral administration of NSAIDs has various adverse events like gastrointestinal alterations - nausea, dyspepsia and gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatotoxicity and blood dyscrasias. As orally given NSAIDs are associated with systemic side effects, it is preferred to alleviate pain and inflammation using topical medication. Thus, recently the focus has been on the development of topical administration of NSAIDs in the form of gels, toothpastes and rinses. AIM: To determine if diclofenac m

Can Chemical Mouthwash Agents Achieve Plaque/Gingivitis Control?

Also note that structured abstracts are not allowed per journal style: What is the effect of a mouthwash containing various active chemical ingredients on plaque control and managing gingivitis in adults based on evidence gathered from existing systematic reviews? The summarized evidence suggests that mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine(CHX) and essential oils (EO) had a large effect supported by a strong body of evidence. Also there was strong evidence for a moderate effect of cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC). Evidence suggests that a CHX mouthwash is the first choice, the most reliable alterna

In vitro activity of a chlorhexidine-containing mouthwash against subgingival bacteria.

Three hundred and fifteen subgingival isolates were tested for their susceptibility to a mouthwash containing 0.2% chlorhexidine. The majority of strains tested were susceptible at high dilution although some strains of S. mitior, S. sanguis, and Capnocytophaga were relatively resistant. It was concluded that, on the basis of these in vitro results, the mouthwash should have potential for subgingival use in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

Alcoholics who drink mouthwash: the spectrum of nonbeverage alcohol use.

Nonbeverage alcohol (NBA), or substitutes for traditional forms of beverage alcohol, includes such substances as mouthwash, aftershave lotion and alcohol-based fuels. Literature pertaining to the prevalence, clinical significance and toxicity of this practice is reviewed, using illustrative cases from a series of 48 NBA consumers. It was found that 10-15% of alcoholics hospitalized in detoxication units have consumed NBA; half of these patients are regular consumers. Addiction to NBA itself may occur. Its use is primarily related to easy accessibility, rather than social or monetary factors. P
