Association of anthelmintic treatment with malaria prevalence in Rural Sussundenga, Mozambique.

Background: Mozambique has the 4 th highest malaria incidence and mortality globally. Despite the existing malaria control strategies, malaria prevalence remains stagnant. These challenges have increased calls for innovative strategies in areas with the highest disease burden. Community mass treatment with anthelmintic agents have been used as an effective tool for the control of major helminth infections and has emerged as a potential tool for vector control in the fight against malaria. Methods: This was an analysis of data from a cross-sectional community-based survey designed to study mala

Tobacco industry presence and practices in Mozambique: a 'chaotic' but worthy market.

BACKGROUND: Mozambique has experienced a series of tobacco industry consolidations both in tobacco leaf buying and processing, and in cigarette manufacturing and marketing. The growth of the tobacco industry presence in Mozambique was followed by an increase in tobacco industry's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. This is the first paper to describe the history of tobacco industry activities in Mozambique, a party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). METHODS: We reviewed industry documents and associated web-based information. Industry documents (1990-2021

Outbreak of Cholera Due to Cyclone Kenneth in Northern Mozambique, 2019.

Cyclone Kenneth was the strongest in the recorded history of the African continent. It landed in the Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique on 25 April 2019, causing 45 deaths, destroying approximately 40,000 houses, and leaving 374,000 people in need for assistance, most at risk of acquiring waterborne diseases such as cholera. This short article aims to explain how the resulting cholera outbreak occurred and the response by the government and partner organizations. The outbreak was declared on 2 May 2019, after 14 cases were recorded in Pemba city (11 cases) and the Mecúfi district (3

Rapid Forecasting of Cholera Risk in Mozambique: Translational Challenges and Opportunities.

Disasters, such as cyclones, create conditions that increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks. Epidemic forecasts can be valuable for targeting highest risk populations before an outbreak. The two main barriers to routine use of real-time forecasts include scientific and operational challenges. First, accuracy may be limited by availability of data and the uncertainty associated with the inherently stochastic processes that determine when and where outbreaks happen and spread. Second, even if data are available, the appropriate channels of communication may prevent their use for decisi

Performance of Tsol-p27 antigen for the serological diagnosis of cysticercosis in Mozambique.

The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis (NCC) requires expensive neuroimaging techniques that are seldom affordable for people in endemic countries. Accordingly, there is a need for new low-cost diagnostic methods that offer high sensitivity and specificity. In this study, we evaluated Western blot analysis of the previously described recombinant antigen Tsol-p27 in relation to a commercial or in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for NCC, and compared the results with those provided by a commercial enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) assay, which was regarded as the refer

Prevalence and risk factors of porcine cysticercosis in Angónia District, Mozambique.

Taenia solium is an important zoonosis in many developing countries. Cysticercosis poses a serious public health risk and incurs sizeable economic losses to pig production. Because data on the epidemiology of porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique are scarce, the present study was conducted to determine the prevalence and risk factors for porcine cysticercosis. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 11 villages in Angónia district, Tete province in northwestern Mozambique. Between September and November, 2007, a total of 661 pigs were tested serologically and examined by tongue inspection. S

Serological comparison of strains of Babesia bovis occurring in Australia and Mozambique.

An antigen prepared in Australia and antisera collected from cattle having had field infections of babesiosis were taken to Mozambique for a serological comparison of strains of babesia bovis from the 2 countries. The reactivity of antisera collected in Mozambique against the Australian antigen was similar to that of the imported antisera. This suggested a close serological relationship between b. bovis of the 2 countries. The practical implication of this finding is that Australian vaccine should protect cattle being introduced into southern Africa from B. bovis-free environments.

Factors associated with HIV infection among adolescents and young people in Mozambique: sub-analysis of immunization, malaria and HIV/AIDS indicator survey in Mozambique-IMASIDA 2015.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection is of concern, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa which is home to two thirds (67%) of the total number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the world. In Southern Africa, Mozambique ranks second, with about 2.2 million PLHIV. Adolescents and young people represent priority groups in the fight against HIV. We set out to assess factors associated with HIV infection among youth which are priority groups for HIV prevention, due to their increased vulnerability to infection. METHODS: The 2015 Immunization, Malaria and HIV/AIDS Indicators Survey in Mozambique was used to id

An analysis of the quality of maternity services in Nampula, Mozambique: implementation research.

INTRODUCTION: the quality of maternity services is an essential factor in reducing maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality, which remains extremely high in Africa. In Mozambique, maternal mortality rate is 451.6 deaths per 100,000 live births (2017). The reasons for this are complex, but one important factor to reduce this burden is to provide effective and efficient care, to improve institutional deliveries. To reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates in Nampula, researchers from Lúrio University and the University of Saskatchewan, carried out an implementation research program, inclu

Soil fertility in slash and burn agricultural systems in central Mozambique.

Slash and burn is a land use practice widespread all over the world, and nowadays it is formally recognized as the principal livelihood system in rural areas of South America, Asia, and Africa. The practice consists of a land rotation where users cut native or secondary forest to establish a new crop field and, in some cases, build charcoal kilns with the cut wood to produce charcoal. Due to several socio-economic changes in developing countries, some scientists and international organizations have questioned the sustainability of slash and burn since in some cases, crop yield does not justify
