AIM: An increased viscosity of gallbladder bile has been considered an important factor in the pathogenesis of gallstone disease. Besides lipids and proteins, mucin has been suggested to affect the viscosity of bile. To further clarify these issues we compared mucin, protein and the lipid componEnts of hepatic and gallbladder bile and its viscosity in patients with gallstones.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mucin genes are expressed in a site specific manner throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Little is known about the expression pattern in the oesophagus. In this study we have investigated MUC gene expression in both the normal oesophagus and specialised intestinal metaplasia (Barrett's oesophagus).

The effect of carbohydrate on the conformation and chain dimensions of mucous glycoproteins was investigated by using light-scattering and circular dichroism studies of native, asialo, and deglycosylated (apo) ovine submaxillary gland mucin (OSM). OSM is a large glycoprotein that is extensively O-glycosylated by the disaccharide alpha-NeuNAc(2-6)alpha-GalNAc-O-Ser/Thr. OBJECTIVE: Otitis media (OM) is a common inflammatory disease spectrum. Cytokine signaling, neutrophil activity, and mucin hypersecretion during recurrent and chronic OM contribute to persistent, viscous middle ear (ME) effusions, hearing loss, and potential for developmental delay. Extraesophageal reflux (EER), specifically pepsin, triggers inflammatory signaling in respiratory mucosa and is associated with OM. Appendiceal or cecal endometriosis uncommonly presents diagnostic challenges, but rare cases with intestinal metaplasia can mimic mucinous tumors of the appendix. We describe 6 cases of appendiceal or cecal endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia that grossly and microscopically mimicked appendiceal mucinous tumors. The cases were characterized by marked mural hypertrophy and elastosis, with distortion of the appendix, and virtual obliteration of the lumen of the appendix. All cases had conventional endometriosis, together with varying amounts of endometriosis with intestinal-type epithelium.
