Multifocal electroretinograms in cases of central areolar choroidal dystrophy.

PURPOSE: To study multifocal electroretinograms (mfERG) in patients with early-stage central alveolar choroidal dystrophy (CACD) with well-demarcated atrophic areas. METHODS: Eight eyes of eight patients with CACD (ages, 47-67 years) and 20 normal control subjects were examined. The first- and second-order kernels (K1 and K2) were extracted from the responses elicited by 61 standard hexagonal elements of a visual response imaging system. The amplitudes and peak times of the focal responses at various retinal eccentricities were studied. RESULTS: The amplitudes of K1 were reduced in the visib

[Multifocal posterior pigment epitheliopathy accompanied by choroidal detachment].

We describe two cases of multifocal posterior exudative lesions accompanied by non-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and massive choroidal detachment. The fluorescein angiogram in both cases showed multiple hyperfluorescent areas in the posterior pole, which resolved following repeated dye-laser photocoagulation. The reported cases are compatible with the clinical features of either multifocal posterior pigment epitheliopathy or uveal effusion, or both. The presence of choroidal detachments and resistance against photocoagulation therapy suggest that the initial lesions occurred in the choroid

Current controversies in the white dot syndromes. Multifocal choroiditis, punctate inner choroidopathy, and the diffuse subretinal fibrosis syndrome.

The white dot syndromes are inflammatory diseases of unknown etiology which share several clinical features. The presence or absence of visual field defects, abnormal electroretinograms, lesions on indocyanine green angiography, and specific antiretinal antibodies may give us clues to their pathogenesis. Careful prospective studies into these features may enable us to differentiate between these diseases and facilitate further research toward developing effective treatments.
