Recent developmental evidence shows that the proposal that consonants are more important than vowels for lexical processing is not universal but language-specific. In non-tone languages, a consonant bias emerges early in development in Romance languages (e.g., French) but later in Germanic languages (e.g., English), while evidence from Asian tone languages (Mandarin, Cantonese) shows a reverse vowel bias. The V-bias in tone languages has been linked to the presence of lexical tones-mainly carried by vowels-which may increase vowel prominence. The present study tests the hypothesis that a V-bia

BACKGROUND: Parent-child interaction (PCI) interventions have the potential to mitigate early-identified risks of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). PCI interventions can be delivered at Universal, Targeted and Specialist levels, but evidence for effectiveness at the Universal level is lacking, especially for some populations. We examine the acceptability of a universal PCI intervention for two underserved groups: children who have SLCN and/or are multilingual. For the former group we also explore acceptability of a supplementary, targeted intervention.
AIM: This study aimed to:

UNLABELLED: Numerous studies in the bilingual literature have shown that cognitive control adapts to several factors related to second language (L2) learning. However, whether third language (L3) learning influences cognitive control remains underexplored. In this longitudinal study, we analyzed behavioral performance and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data among Chinese-English bilinguals at resting-state and during a flanker task both prior to English (L2) or Japanese (L3) learning and one year later. During brain resting-states for these same learners, we conducted a correlati

BACKGROUND: Early and effective treatment for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) is important. Although a growing body of research shows the effects of interventions at the group level, clinicians observe large individual differences in language growth, and differences in outcomes across language domains. A systematic understanding of how child characteristics contribute to changes in language skills is still lacking.
AIMS: To assess changes in the language domains: expressive morphosyntax; receptive and expressive vocabulary; and comprehension, in children in special needs e

BACKGROUND: The Registry of Stroke Care Quality (RES-Q) is a health care quality improvement platform used globally. RES-Q collects structured quality-of-care data for patients with stroke, requiring clinicians to manually extract information from electronic health records or documents such as discharge summaries. This process is essential but time-consuming, particularly given the variability, length, and semistructured nature of clinical reports.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a multilingual Evidence-Based Question-Answering framework that identifies supporting text spa

INTRODUCTION: The Student Demands-Resources (SDR) theory proposes that psychological and environmental resources may become more relevant as situational demands increase. This mechanism remains underexamined in medical students. We assessed whether resilience and language proficiency were associated with academic engagement across training phases in a multilingual medical cohort.
METHODS: We surveyed 422 medical students at an international medical school (May-September 2024). Hierarchical multiple regression modeled academic engagement (UWES-9S) as a function of psychological resilience (BRS

PURPOSE: This study investigated the frequency, purpose, target groups, and methods of language sample analysis (LSA) among speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in German-speaking Switzerland. LSA is particularly relevant in linguistically diverse and underresearched contexts such as diglossic settings, where everyday spoken language differs from standardized varieties.
METHOD: A survey was conducted among 550 SLPs in German-speaking Switzerland. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data, focusing on reported use, target demographics, and analytical methods concerning LSA.
RESULTS:

The current study explores whether monolingual (n = 32, 17 girls, 15 boys) and multilingual (n = 23, 12 boys, 11 girls) toddlers in French-speaking Switzerland are able to recognize correct pronunciations and detect subtle mispronunciations of familiar words, and whether these early skills are connected to later language abilities. In a looking-while-listening eye-tracking paradigm at 20 months of age, both monolingual and multilingual participants showed significantly higher looking time increases (medium effect size) for pictures of familiar objects (e.g., a foot) when the object was labeled

INTRODUCTION: Matching short, specialized skill expressions across English, Russian, and Kazakh is challenging because general-domain multilingual encoders underperform on terse, code-mixed, domain-specific phrases, particularly in the low-resource Kazakh setting.
METHODS: We fine-tuned a multilingual Sentence Transformer using a staged Multiple Negatives Ranking objective on a trilingual paraphrase corpus, including Russian augmentation pairs. We evaluated skill matching and semantic similarity across languages and assessed the resulting embeddings through downstream skill-taxonomy clusterin

BACKGROUND: Depression is underdiagnosed worldwide, and clinicians rely on interpreting patients' subjective speech. Qualitative analysis of patient language does not scale, and existing computational approaches describe topics with keyword lists that miss clinical nuance.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether clustering spontaneous speech transcripts with large language models (LLMs) yields clusters whose membership is associated with validated clinical scales across multilingual cohorts, and whether LLMs can render those clusters human-readable through fine-grained natural-language descriptions.

This study advances the automation of Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis by analyzing speech characteristics, leveraging a comprehensive approach that integrates a voting-based machine learning model. Given the growing prevalence of PD, especially among the elderly population, continuous and efficient diagnosis is of paramount importance. Conventional monitoring methods suffer from limitations related to time, cost, and accessibility, underscoring the need for the development of automated diagnostic tools. In this paper, we present a robust model for classifying speech patterns in Korean PD pa

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4, have created new opportunities for intelligent computer-assisted language learning, particularly through personalized feedback for multilingual English learners. Building on research in automated writing evaluation (AWE), this study developed an equity-aware AI tutoring framework that integrates GPT-generated feedback with rule-based simulated feedback for learner spelling errors. The framework draws on annotated TOEFL-Spell data enriched with learner first-language (L1) and English proficiency information to examine

BACKGROUND: Short video vlogs have become a prominent site of informal digital language learning, yet most research has emphasized skills, motivation, and willingness to communicate, with comparatively little attention to social affective and identity related self-perceptions. This study examined how short video vlog assisted informal digital language learning is associated with self-perceived multilingual identity, whether social presence and learning engagement are modeled as serial intermediate variables, and whether digital literacy conditions these associations.
METHODS: A cross sectiona

Speech language therapists (SLTs) are often challenged in their work with patients with different communication vulnerabilities. Even though SLTs are trained experts in communication, experiences from the field indicate that they often feel uncertain in interactions with multilingual patients and their families. This paper explores how language discordance between SLTs and multilingual parents influences regular institutional interaction. A discourse analysis is conducted on 33 authentic transcripts of specific discourse types between SLTs, parents, and their children within a multilingual con

The present article introduces a special issue of the American Annals of the Deaf. Students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing and come from homes where a language other than English or American Sign Language is used constitute 19.4%-35.0% of the U.S. d/Dhh population (Gallaudet Research Institute, 2013). The authors propose moving beyond the standardized use of the designation English Language Learners to embrace terminology encompassing these learners as diverse and rich in language: d/Dhh Multilingual Learners (DMLs). The authors present (a) a discussion of terminology, (b) an overview of av
