Differential responses of individuals with late-stage dementia to two novel environments: a multimedia room and an interior garden.

The purpose of this study was to determine the responses of individuals with advanced dementia to two novel sensory environments in a nursing home facility. The first was a multisensory Snoezelen room; the second was a temporary Japanese garden. Subjects viewed each environment twice a week for 15 minutes during the study. Stress was measured using heart rate and informant-based behavioral changes. By these criteria, the garden-viewing group showed positive behavioral changes while the responses of the subjects in the Snoezelen group were more negative. The response of the subjects' pulse rate

Multimedia-assisted narrative intervention for existential distress among patients with advanced cancer: a one-group pre-post study.

PURPOSE: Patients with advanced cancer often experience challenges related to life meaning, coping confidence, and death-related concerns, which may impair quality of life. This preliminary one-group quasi-experimental pre-post study examined whether meaning in life, terminal self-efficacy, and death anxiety changed after a multimedia-assisted narrative psychosocial intervention. The uncontrolled design was intended to identify preliminary within-participant signals and cannot establish intervention efficacy. METHODS: A one-group quasi-experimental pre-post study was conducted in three hospic

Dynamic modeling of chemical fate and transport in multimedia environments at watershed scale-II: trichloroethylene test case.

A multimedia environmental fate model was developed to study the temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of a chemical pollutant at watershed scale. The theoretical considerations and implementation of the model were described in the accompanying paper (Part I). This paper presents the result of a test simulation on the transport of trichloroethylene (TCE) in the Connecticut River Basin. The simulation results were reported as time series of concentrations and inter-media transport fluxes in the compartments of atmosphere, plant, soil, surface water, and sediment. Predicted concentrations f

Evaluating a Multimedia Messaging Intervention to Increase Adolescent HIV Testing: Protocol for a Hybrid Type 1 Effectiveness Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents who can benefit from HIV testing due to their sexual behavior (eg, condomless anal or vaginal sex) report suboptimal HIV testing rates. However, interventions designed to increase HIV testing rates among SGM adolescents are lacking, and even when effective interventions exist, reaching SGM adolescents outside research settings can be a challenge. This hybrid type 1 study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Sharing Health Education Resources (SHER), a multimedia messaging service (MMS) intervention in increasing adolescent HIV testing r

Introducing TRECEY: An algorithm for tremor compensation using eye-tracking during multimedia remote controller operation in Parkinson's disease (PD).

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent progressive neurodegenerative disorder in the world. It affects 2-3% of older adults 65 and above and nearly 4% of older adults older than 85 years. One of PD's most common motor symptoms is tremors in the limbs. These tremors cause significant difficulty in performing everyday activities such as buttoning shirts, using a fork, writing, and operating a computer mouse or television remote making the patients reliant on their caregivers. There is no cure for PD, and treatment options to manage the tremors have decreasing response over time. S

Improving Concussion Reporting across National College Athletic Association Divisions Using a Theory-Based, Data-Driven, Multimedia Concussion Education Intervention.

Although a base level of knowledge is needed to recognize a concussion, knowledge-focused concussion educational materials ignore multifaceted barriers to concussion reporting. We compared student-athlete concussion reporting intentions and behaviors prior to and 1 year after exposure to an intervention or control treatment. We randomly assigned 891 collegiate student-athletes from three universities (Divisions I, II, III) to either the control group (National College Athletic Association [NCAA] Concussion Fact Sheet) or intervention group (theory-based, data-driven, multimedia, simulated conc

Getting Beyond Plain Text: Long-Term Adoption Rates and Survey of Radiologist Experience with Interactive Multimedia Reporting Technology.

Radiology reports are ubiquitously formatted as plain text even though interactive multimedia reporting technology (IMR) is capable of enriching reports. To evaluate long-term adoption rates and radiologists' clinical experiences with IMR, we reviewed the last 1 year of diagnostic reports (n = 382,508), 5 years after IMR implementation, for the presence of hyperlinks. An anonymous survey about IMR was built in Qualtrics and distributed to radiologists (n = 128). Results include the following: (1) Last 12-month % of reports containing hyperlinks to imaging findings varied by modality and subspe
