Field evaluation of Nzi and modified Nzi traps for sampling of Stomoxys calcitrans at dairy farms in Uruguay.

Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758), the stable fly, is a hematophagous pest that affects animal livestock worldwide by lowering productivity and mechanically transmitting pathogens. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Nzi trap and a modified version (with and without bait) for capturing stable flies on two dairy farms in southwestern Uruguay, under conditions of natural infestation by these flies. The study used a 4 × 4 Latin square design with five replicates conducted independently at each dairy farm. Traps at each dairy were emptied daily to identify and count stable flies befor

Thelazia lacrymalis in horses from Romania: epidemiology, morphology and phylogenetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Equine thelaziosis is a neglected vector-borne parasitic disease in modern veterinary medicine, lacking recent reports. It is transmitted by Musca autumnalis, and potentially other Muscidae species, by ingesting the lachrymal secretions of its equine host. The distribution of both Thelazia lacrymalis and its intermediate hosts remains largely unknown throughout Europe, with most studies dating back 20 years. The aim of this study was to assess the presence, prevalence and distribution of T. lacrymalis in horses from Romania. METHODS: The eyes of 273 horses, slaughtered at two abat

Milk production traits of beef cows as affected by horn fly count and sire breed type.

Horn fly infestations negatively impact economic traits of beef cattle. Our objective was to determine the impact of horn flies on beef cattle milk yield and quality. Cows (n = 53) were derived from Brangus dams and sired by Bonsmara (n = 7), Brangus (n = 13), Charolais (n = 8), Gelbvieh (n = 5), Hereford (n = 12), and Romosinuano (n = 8) bulls. Horn fly counts and estimates of milk yield and quality were recorded monthly from May through October on individual cows. Data for milk yield and quality and horn fly count were analyzed by mixed model least squares using a linear model including sire

Observations on Sudanese camel nasal myiasis caused by the larvae of Cephalopina titillator.

Forty-four camels slaughtered at Nyala abattoir, western Sudan, were examined for infection with the larvae of Cephalopina titillator. The infection rate was found to be 100 p. 100. The parasitic burden ranged between 8-243 per animal. They were recovered throughout the year. The first stage larvae were noticed from December to May, indicating the breeding season of the fly. The larvae were found to cause visible pathological lesions on the nasopharynx. These were also demonstrated histopathologically. Bacteriological examinations revealed the presence of Pasteurella haemolytica and Klebsiella

Contributions to the identification of Fannia lineata (Stein, 1895) (Diptera: Fanniidae) in forensic contexts: first record in a human cadaver.

Flies in the family Fanniidae represent an important component of the entomofauna associated with body decomposition and they play an important role in the recycle of the organic matter. Forty species have been reported from the Italian territory but till now only two, Fannia scalaris and Fannia canicularis, have been reported from human cadavers on a larval stage. This paper reports the first finding of a population of Fannia lineata associated with a human cadaver in Southern Italy. The body was in an advanced, partially mummified, state of decomposition with a complex community of insects c

Human myiasis in New Zealand: imported and indigenously-acquired cases: the species of concern and clinical aspects.

Reports of myiasis in humans in New Zealand are somewhat rare, and little attention has been paid to this issue in the local medical literature. A number of Diptera (fly) families present in New Zealand have been associated with cases of human myiasis: Calliphoridae (7 species), Fanniidae (2 species), Muscidae (3 species), Oestridae (4 species), Phoridae (3 species), Psychodidae (1 species), Sarcophagidae (2 species), Stratiomyidae (1 species) and Syrphidae (1 species). Despite these numbers, there have only been 6 published records and we obtained further 16 unpublished reports of myiasis acq

Effect of aggregation of horn fly populations within cattle herds and consequences for sampling to obtain unbiased estimates of abundance.

Reanalysis of counts of horn fly, Hematobia irritans (L.), obtained from a variety of cattle herds indicated that aggregation of the flies within herds decreased as mean fly density increased. Aggregation was also related to the proportion of fly-resistant and fly-susceptible cattle in a herd. Herds were grouped according to their degree of horn fly aggregation. Low aggregation herds included larger framed Angus, Horned Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Red Poll breeds. Moderate aggregation occurred with Brahman, Charolais, small-framed Angus, mixed cows, and Hereford x Charolais cross. High aggr

An immunocytochemical investigation of trypsin secretion in the midgut of the stablefly, Stomoxys calcitrans.

Musca domestica trypsin antibody cross-reacts with polypeptide bands of M(r) 25,000 and 30,000 showing proteolytic activity from Stomoxys calcitrans midgut extracts. Secretory granules from the main enzyme-secreting region, the opaque zone, stained heavily with the trypsin antibody in both unfed and blood-fed flies. Heterogeneous staining of granules suggests the unequal distribution of trypsin in secretory granules. This is also consistent with the occurrence of non-parallel secretion, which is also suggested by the possible preferential release of smaller, heavily stained secretory granules

Reassessing Stephanofilaria stilesi dermatitis in cattle, with characterization of molecular markers for confirming diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Stephanofilaria stilesi is a vector-borne filarioid nematode of cattle in North America that is transmitted via the hematophagous horn fly (Haematobia irritans) intermediate host. Despite being relatively common, little attention has been given to a thorough description of S. stilesi lesions and the potential integration of pathological and molecular diagnostic findings to confirm infection. METHODS: To characterize the cutaneous lesions caused by S. stilesi in cattle (Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus), skin of the ventral abdominal midline was collected from 22 animals du

Prevalence of external parasites in the south eastern desert of Egypt.

External parasites in the triangle region (Halaib & Shalatin) affecting the animal health were studied. Ectoparasites were collected in several sites by using bait traps and directly from animal bodies. Results indicated the presence of twelve species of insects belonging to seven genera included in three families (Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae). Concerning ectoparasites on animal bodies, there were two species of biting lice infested goats and sheep (Bovicola caprae and B. ovis, respectively) and two species of sucking lice on goats (Linognathus africanus and L. stenopsis). Evaluation of mechanical transmission of Trypanosoma vivax by Stomoxys calcitrans in a region without a cyclic vector.

This work investigated the mechanical transmission of Trypanosoma vivax by Stomoxys calcitrans to cattle in a region without a cyclic vector. The study involved two experiments, one with calves experimentally infected with T. vivax, in the acute phase of trypanosomosis (Experiment 1) and the other in the chronic phase (Experiment 2). In both experiments, two transmission methods were used with flies that had not fed for 24 h or had never fed: (i) Method 1: flies released freely in cattle pens (≈3,300 flies/pen for 10 days); and (ii) Method 2: flies placed in a feeding chamber (12 flies/animal)

Detection and distribution of Stephanofilaria sp. in buffalo flies and buffalo fly lesions in north Australian beef cattle.

Buffalo flies (Haematobia irritans exigua) are ectoparasites of major animal health and production concern in north Australian beef herds. Skin lesions associated with buffalo fly infestation, cause hide damage and welfare issues and are manifested as dermatitis or ulcerated areas found most commonly near the medial canthus of the eye, along the lateral and ventral neck and on the abdomen. Buffalo flies can transmit a nematode, Stephanofilaria sp., which has been considered the main aetiological agent for buffalo fly lesions, but the role of nematodes in the development of the lesions has not

Bovine parafilariosis - New autochthonous cases from Germany and summary of recent reports from Europe.

Bovine parafilariosis is an emerging fly-borne disease in central Europe, characterized by seasonal occurrence of hemorrhagic exudations ('bleeding spots') from the end of winter to end of summer. In two cases from Germany reported here, one animal of a small herd in Bavaria and 20 animals on a farm in Baden-Württemberg presented bleeding spots from late March and late April 2020, respectively. Exudate samples from both cases were positive for larvated Parafilaria eggs. Examination of the skin and trimmed tissue after slaughter of the animal from Bavaria resulted in the collection of 11 nemato

The genome of the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, reveals potential mechanisms underlying reproduction, host interactions, and novel targets for pest control.

BACKGROUND: The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is a major blood-feeding pest of livestock that has near worldwide distribution, causing an annual cost of over $2 billion for control and product loss in the USA alone. Control of these flies has been limited to increased sanitary management practices and insecticide application for suppressing larval stages. Few genetic and molecular resources are available to help in developing novel methods for controlling stable flies. RESULTS: This study examines stable fly biology by utilizing a combination of high-quality genome sequencing and RNA-Seq a
