Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare brain abscess in HIV-positive patient.

Mycobacterial opportunistic infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among patients living with HIV (PLHIV) worldwide. Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection is one of the leading causes of opportunistic infection in patients with advanced acquired immunodeficiency syndrome i.e., with CD4 count less than 50/cu.mm. Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is among the most common opportunistic bacterial infections in those patients with advanced immunodeficiency apart from cryptococcal meningitis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, etc. Common presentations of mycobacteri

rpoB sequence-based identification of Mycobacterium avium complex species.

The Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) comprises slowly growing mycobacteria responsible for opportunistic infections and zoonoses. The ability to speciate MAC isolates in the clinical microbiology laboratory is critical for determining the organism implicated in clinical disease and for epidemiological investigation of the source of infection. Investigation of a 711 bp variable fragment of rpoB flanked by the Myco-F/Myco-R primers found a 0.7-5.1 % divergence among MAC reference strains, with Mycobacterium chimaera and Mycobacterium intracellulare being the most closely related. Using a 0.7 %

[Disseminated Mycobacterium avium infection in an immunocompetent aged patient].

We reported an immunocompetent elderly patient with disseminated Mycobacterium avium infection exhibiting bronchial, pulmonary, nodal, otitic and osteitic lesions. An 82-year-old man was initially hospitalized with cervical and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. M. avium was demonstrated in gastric juice and a lymph node. An endobronchial polypoid lesion was formed by perforation of mediastinal mycobacterial lymphadenitis into the right main bronchus. Combined treatment by CAM, RFP, EB, and SM caused the lesions to diminish and the treatment was continued for 18 months. One year after completion of

Disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection in three Siamese cats.

Disseminated infection with Mycobacterium avium complex is described in 3 adult Siamese cats. All cats were the result of father-daughter matings. Clinical signs included anorexia, weight loss, and lethargy. Physical examination revealed pale mucous membranes, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and pyrexia. Nonregenerative anemia was detected in all 3 cats, and macrocytosis was observed in 2. An antemortem diagnosis of mycobacterial infection was made on the basis of identification of acid-fast bacilli in tissue aspirates. The cats died or were euthanatized owing to clinical deterioration, despite

Disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare infection appearing as a panniculitis.

A 34-year-old woman had wide-spread panniculitis due to a disseminated infection with Mycobacteria avium-intracellulare. The patient had previously received treatment with high dosages of corticosteroids. Suppurative lesions teeming with acid-fast bacilli and without formation of granulomas were found in many organs, including the skin, mediastinum, spleen, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Both the appearance of disseminated M avium-intracellular infection resembling panniculitis and the involvement of mediastinum have not previously been reported, to our knowledge.

Interaction between Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis with the enteric glia and microglial cells.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the interaction of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, M. bovis and M. tuberculosis and different glial cells (enteric glial and microglial cells) in order to evaluate the infecting ability of these microorganisms and the effects produced on these cells, such as the evaluation of cytokines expression. RESULTS: Our experiments demonstrated the adhesion of M. paratuberculosis to the enteroglial cells and the induction of IL-1A and IL-6 expression; M. tuberculosis and M. bovis showed a good adhesive capability to the enteric cell line with the expression

Liposome-encapsulated gentamicin treatment of Mycobacterium avium-Mycobacterium intracellulare complex bacteremia in AIDS patients.

TLC G-65, a liposome-encapsulated gentamicin, was given intravenously twice weekly for 4 weeks to AIDS patients with Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare complex (MAC) bacteremia at 1.7 mg of gentamicin per kg of body weight per infusion (4 patients), 3.4 mg/kg (10 patients), and 5.1 mg/kg (7 patients). MAC colony counts in blood fell by 75% or more in all three groups (P < 0.005). Drug resistance did not emerge during the study period. Transient renal insufficiency developed in one patient; no other adverse effects were detected. Liposome-encapsulated gentamicin is a potential therapy for MA

The role of Mce proteins in Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis infection.

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is the causative agent of Johne's Disease, a chronic granulomatous enteritis of ruminants. MAP establishes an infection in the host via the small intestine. This requires the bacterium to adhere to, and be internalised by, cells of the intestinal tract. The effector molecules expressed by MAP for this purpose remain to be fully identified and understood. Mammalian cell entry (mce) proteins have been shown to enable other Mycobacterial species to attach to and invade host epithelial cells. Here, we have expressed Mce1A, Mce1D, Mce3C and Mce4

A Case of Pulmonary Infectious Bulla Caused by Mycobacterium Avium.

A 37-year-old Japanese man presented with a bulla with niveau-like opacity in the right upper lung on chest radiography. Air-fluid level gradually increased despite broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. Right upper lobectomy was performed, and epithelioid granuloma with mycobacteria was histopathologically observed. Bacterial culture of the fluid was negative, but mycobacterial culture was positive for Mycobacterium avium; therefore, the patient was diagnosed with pulmonary infected bulla caused by Mycobacterium avium. He was further treated with antimycobacterial agents after resection of the in

The discovery of ceftazidime/avibactam as an anti-Mycobacterium avium agent.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if ceftaroline and ceftazidime combined with avibactam are efficacious against pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease. METHODS: First, we performed a concentration-effect study of ceftaroline and ceftaroline/avibactam against extracellular MAC in test tubes. Given the difficulty of obtaining avibactam at the time of experimentation, we used a single concentration of commercial ceftazidime/avibactam, and two sets of non-treated controls, one with ceftazidime/avibactam and the other without. After finding antimicrobial activity with the ceftazidime/avibacta

[The genome polymorphism of the Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis strains].

The non-tuberculosis mycobacteria Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) are able to cause human mycobacteriosis. In this work, the results of the first comprehensive study of the genome polymorphism of the clinical strains of MAH were reported using the typing scheme by 13 loci MATR-VNTR (TR292, TRX3, TR25, TR47, MATR-1, MATR-4, MATR-5, MATR-6, MATR-8, MATR-11, MATR-14, MATR-15, MATR-16) containing tandem nucleotide sites and IS1245-RFLP-typing sites. A total of 90 MAH strains isolated from patients with lung mycobacteriosis without epidemiological connection (including HIV infected) we

The changing pattern of clinical Mycobacterium avium isolation in the Netherlands.

SETTING: National Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory, The Netherlands. OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of factors other than laboratory improvements in the increasing frequency of isolation of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in the Netherlands; laboratory improvements are often considered key factors in this increase. DESIGN: Laboratory database study. All clinically isolated NTM referred to the national reference laboratory between January 2000 and January 2007 were retrieved from the laboratory database and categorised by species, patient age group and sample origin. Data were compared wit

The cost-effectiveness of prophylaxis for Mycobacterium avium complex in AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a simulation model to project costs, life expectancy, and cost-effectiveness in discounted dollars per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) saved for clinical strategies to prevent Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in patients with AIDS. METHODS: We used natural history data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, efficacy and toxicity data from randomized clinical trials, and cost data from the AIDS Cost and Services Utilization Survey. The model permits timing of prophylaxis to be stratified by CD4 count (201-300, 101-200, 51-100, and < or = 50/mm3), and allows combinatio

Role of iron in the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium avium infection in mice.

Mycobacterial infections are of serious concern to HIV-infected patients, and take a heavy toll of such patients. Mycobacterium avium is the most common opportunistic bacterial infection in patients with AIDS. The overload of iron in serum has been implicated in the pathogenicity of a number of bacterial infections. Since iron storage in cells such as macrophages is increased in AIDS, the role of iron as a possible factor in the pathogenesis of M. avium infection was examined. Supplementing iron to normal laboratory chow resulted in accelerated M. avium infection in mice inoculated earlier wit

[A case of eosinophilic pneumonia associated with Mycobacterium avium infection].

A 54 year-old woman was admitted with cough and high fever. Computed tomographic scan of the chest showed bilateral patchy infiltrates, predominantly in the upper lobes. Eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) accounted for 19% of BALF cells. Furthermore, Mycobacterium avium was isolated from a bronchial washing from the upper area of the right lung (S3) and a sample of sputum which had been submitted for microbial examination about 1 month before admission by another clinic. Based on these finding's the diagnosis of eosinophilic pneumonia associated with Mycobacterium avium inf
