Association of Ureaplasma urealyticum in the placenta with perinatal morbidity and mortality.

We investigated the presence of ureaplasmas, mycoplasmas, chlamydiae, fungi, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and cytomegalovirus in fetal membranes and evaluated their association with perinatal morbidity and mortality. We cultured 801 placentas from three groups of subjects (144 who died in the perinatal period, 452 neonates admitted to the intensive-care unit, and 205 controls). Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, or both were isolated from 21 per cent of placentas of premature and term infants who died in the perinatal period, 25 per cent of those admitted to intensive care, and 11

Maternal and infant sexually transmitted diseases.

Sexually transmitted infection may result in serious damage to the reproductive tract of the mother, damage to the fetus, wastage of pregnancy, or illness or death of the infant. The effects of gonorrhea, Chlamydia trachomatis infection, mycoplasmal infections, group B streptococcus infections, syphilis, and viral infections are discussed separately for both mother and infant.

Association of Ureaplasma urealyticum infection of the lower respiratory tract with chronic lung disease and death in very-low-birth-weight infants.

Endotracheal aspirates from 200 infants who weighted less than or equal to 2500 g and who had evidence of respiratory disease were cultured within 24 h of birth for mycoplasmas, chlamydiae, viruses, and bacteria to evaluate the relation between lower respiratory tract infection and development of chronic lung disease and/or death. Ureaplasma urealyticum, an organism not visible on gram stain, not recovered on routine bacteriological media, and not susceptible to antibiotics commonly used to treat neonatal infections, was the single most common organism isolated. 14% of isolates were from infan

The prevalence of six species of Mycoplasmataceae in an HIV/AIDS population in Jiangsu Province, China.

This study employed culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to examine the prevalence of Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma fermentans, Mycoplasma penetrans and Mycoplasma pirum in 210 HIV/AIDS patients, 455 sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic attendees and 245 healthy volunteers from first-void urine specimens for men and endocervical swabs for women. U. urealyticum and M. hominis were detected in 107 (51.0%) and 69 (32.9%) patients in the HIV/AIDS group. At least one of the other four organisms was detected in 34 (16.2%) HIV/AIDS patient

Acute pelvic inflammatory disease.

Acute pelvic inflammatory disease is one of the most important consequences of sexually transmitted infection. Of sexually active women in the United States, one million (or 1 per cent) develop the infection. The sequelae include infertility (10 per cent), ectopic pregnancy (5 per cent), chronic pain (15 per cent), and recurrent infection (25 per cent). Organisms that cause the infection include Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, genital mycoplasma, and a wide variety of facultative and anaerobic bacteria. Prompt recognition and therapy are necessary to reduce the sequelae.
