A neurofibroma with focal glomus-like body differentiation is an unusual phenomenon recently encountered in an excision specimen from the right lateral distal forearm of a 26-year-old man. Glomus cells are modified smooth muscle cells normally present in glomus-like bodies but can also be found in glomus tumors (GT) or lesions considered in the spectrum of GT, including myopericytoma, myofibroma, and angiolipoma. Neurofibromas are peripheral nerve sheath tumors derived from the neural crest cells. While both GT and its variants and neurofibroma are thought to be derived from different cell typ

Myopericytoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm thought to comprise part of a spectrum of perivascular myoid cell neoplasms with myofibroma, angioleiomyoma, and glomus tumor. We describe 2 such neoplasms involving the urinary tract: 1 incidentally identified in the kidney of a 59-year-old woman and 1 in the urinary bladder of a 52-year-old woman who presented with urinary frequency and dysuria. Histologically, the bladder tumor was composed of numerous blood vessels surrounded by plump perivascular myoid cells, as in subcutaneous myopericytoma. The renal tumor showed similar morphology centrall

Heterozygous activating missense variants of PDGFRB are associated with the phenotype of Kosaki overgrowth syndrome (KOGS). Here, we present a family including a father and 2 siblings with a novel variant, c.2567A>T (p.Asn856Ile), localized in the cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domain, exhibiting a KOGS phenotype. The coarsening of the facial features, enlargement of the hands/feet, and progressive scoliosis started to appear after an average age of 6. There were no signs of thin/fragile skin, premature aging appearance, myofibroma, white matter findings, and intellectual disability in any of the

OBJECTIVES: To describe a rare case of aggressive fibromatosis of the stomach and discuss the differential diagnoses.
METHODS: A 47-year-old man presented with nonspecific abdominal pain. Gastroscopy revealed stomach wall swelling. An antral gastrectomy was performed. Histological examination revealed spindle-shaped cells and morphology typical of aggressive fibromatosis. We performed a literature search to identify conditions with features similar to those of aggressive fibromatosis.
RESULTS: Aggressive fibromatosis does not metastasize, but it is locally invasive and has a tendency to rela

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a relatively rare pediatric neoplasm that usually presents as a solitary pulmonary lesion and may lead to both intrapulmonary and extrapulmonary complications. Although surgical resection remains the standard treatment, endoscopic resection via fiberoptic bronchoscopy has been rarely reported. We describe the case of a 7-year-old boy admitted for recurrent cough. Imaging revealed pulmonary atelectasis, and the tumor was successfully resected using snare electrocautery during fiberoptic bronchoscopy. No recurrence was observed during follow-up. This c

We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with a lesion on the posterior aspect of the neck, which was clinically compatible with granuloma annulare. An incisional biopsy was performed and the result of the biopsy was consistent with a fibrohistiocytic proliferation. After the total excision of the lesion, the definitive diagnosis of dermatomyofibroma was determined. Dermatomyofibroma is a benign and rare proliferation of myofibroblasts of the skin. Dermatomyofibroma is a solitary and slowly growing tumor. It is more common in adolescents and young adults, with a female preponderance. Dermatomyo

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon neoplasm most frequently seen in the abdomino-pelvic region and lungs of children and young adults. Laryngeal tumors are rare. We present a case of a 23-year-old patient with a 5 month history of laryngitis and aphonia unresolved by corticotherapy. Laryngoscopy revealed a small, non-ulcerated, subepithelial, polypoid mass arising from the right vocal cord. The diagnosis of IMT with ALK expression was supported by histopathologic and molecular analysis. The THBS1 fusion partner was identified by RNA-sequencing analysis for the first time i

A 38-year-old woman presented with dysuria and fever. Her medical and family histories were unremarkable. CT scan of the abdomen revealed a polypoid mass of 4×2.6×2.2 cm. Her cystoscopy showed a 4×2 cm solid broad-based growth at trigone of the urinary bladder. She underwent transurethral resection of the urinary bladder tumour (TURBT). Histopathology revealed a poorly circumscribed proliferation of spindle cells arranged in a haphazard and fascicular manner along with many traversing blood vessels in a myxoid and hyalinised stroma. Immunohistochemistry was positive for anaplastic lymphoma kin

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is associated in 15-30% of cases with systemic symptomatology, such as prolonged fever, weight loss, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), anemia, thrombocytosis, and leukocytosis. We report the case of a 4-year-old Lebanese boy who presented with high-grade fever of long duration, and a single (unpaired) positive Widal agglutination test. Blood culture was negative. A diagnosis of typhoid fever was made. An abdominal (mesenteric) IMT was incidentally discovered, 30 days after the fever had appeared. After surgery, the fever disappeared immedia

There is a broad spectrum of soft-tissue masses in children that can be challenging to diagnose clinically and on imaging. This article reviews the typical clinical and imaging findings of the most common and relevant benign, intermediate and malignant pediatric soft-tissue tumors in the following categories of the 2013 World Health Organization (WHO) classification: adipocytic tumors (lipoma, lipoblastoma, and liposarcoma), fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumors (nodular fasciitis, myositis ossificans, fibrous hamartoma of infancy, fibromatosis colli, desmoid-type fibromatosis, lipofibromatosis,

Myopericytoma is a mesenchymal tumour that shares characteristics with other soft tissue tumours including glomus tumours and myofibromas. These pericytic tumours show characteristic perivascular growth patterns (Sbaraglia M, Bellan E, Dei Tos AP. The 2020 WHO classification of soft tissue tumours: news and perspectives. Pathologica 2021;113:70-84. https://doi.org/10.32074/1591-951X-213). Myopericytoma differentiates itself as it tends to have a spindle shape histologically, rather than an epithelioid shape as with the glomus variety. Myopericytoma rarely demonstrate malignant behaviour. A 67-

We recently encountered a case of primary pulmonary angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH), which was initially misdiagnosed as inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) based in part on anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Prompted by this experience, we evaluated ALK expression in 11 AFH, 15 IMT, and 11 follicular dendritic cell sarcomas using 3 different antibody clones: D5F3, 5A4, and ALK1. ALK IHC positive cases were analyzed with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using dual color ALK break-apart probe kit. The majority of AFH cases studied wer

We expand the Kosaki overgrowth syndrome (KOGS) phenotype by over 70% to include 24 unreported KOGS symptoms, in a first male patient, the third overall associated with the PDGFRB c.1751C>G p.(Pro584Arg) mutation. Eighteen of these symptoms are unique to our patient, the remaining six are shared with other patients. Of the 24 unreported features overall, 6 show marked phenotype evolution and varying time of onset. The triangular face detected at 14 months and long palpebral fissures with lateral ectropion at 4 years are present in other members of the cohort. The remaining 4 are unique to Pati

Cranial fasciitis (CF) is an uncommon benign myofibroblastic proliferation involving the soft and hard tissues of the cranium. It typically occurs in the pediatric population with a male predilection (male-to-female ratio 1.5:1). The clinical presentation is usually a rapidly expanding, painless nodule. Bone erosion may be appreciated radiographically. Histopathologic sections of CF show plump, fibroblast-like cells with pale, oval shaped nuclei and prominent nucleoli in a fibrous or myxoid background. Growth is self-limited and surgical excision is considered curative. Due to these features,

Cutaneous mucinosis of infancy (CMI) is a rare dermatologic condition, first reported in 1980 and currently classified within the complex group of papular mucinoses. We report a case of CMI and review the prior 13 cases in the literature. The patient was a 5-year-old girl who presented with asymptomatic dermal papules and plaques on her leg and back with no overlying color change. These lesions were first noticed during infancy and had become slightly more evident over time. The patient had a history of birthmarks and eczema. Her family history included eczema, allergies, photosensitivity, and

Connective tissue consists of collagen, elastic fibers and ground substances produced by fibrocytes. These cells are usually spindle-shaped with slender nuclei and bipolar cytoplasmic extensions. Apart from labeling for vimentin and variable reactivity for factor XIIIa and CD34, fibrocytes are immunonegative. Electron microscopy reveals prominent endoplasmic reticulum, but is otherwise indistinct. Lesions with fibrocytic differentiation can be divided into five categories: scars, keloids, dermatofibromas, nodular fasciitis, and superficial fibromatoses are inflammatory lesions. Thereby, dermat

Soft tissue tumors with smooth muscle differentiation are rare in pediatric patients. Despite often showing morphologic features sufficient for classification as "leiomyosarcoma" in adults (eg, high cellularity and mitotic activity), clinical follow-up has shown only indolent behavior. The pathological features of recently reported SRF-rearranged "cellular myofibromas/myopericytomas," typically occurring in children, overlap with those of true smooth muscle tumors. We studied a large series of pediatric tumors with morphologic and immunohistochemical evidence of smooth muscle differentiation,

AIMS: In 2017, a subset of cellular variants of myofibroma and myopericytoma with a smooth muscle-like immunophenotype and harbouring recurrent SRF::RELA gene fusions was reported. Although the anatomical distribution was found to be quite broad, no tumours with these gene fusions in the female reproductive system have been illustrated to date.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Herein, we report the histological and immunophenotypical features of three uterine tumours with SRF::RELA gene fusions. Microscopically, all three tumours were composed of cellular oval to spindle cells arranged in intersecting fa
