Does myringosclerosis affect the success of butterfly myringoplasty?

OBJECTIVES: Butterfly inlay myringoplasty is a simple and practical surgical technique used in the repair of tympanic membrane perforation offering good outcomes in terms of hearing. The present study evaluates the effects of myringosclerosis on the success of surgery by reviewing demographic data, perforation size and hearing outcomes of patients undergoing endoscopic inlay butterfly myringoplasty due to chronic otitis media. METHODS: The study included 75 patients who underwent endoscopic inlay butterfly myringoplasty with the diagnosis of chronic suppurative otitis media in the Department

Pediatric myringoplasty: A study of effectiveness and influencing factors.

OBJECTIVES: Until today, there is no consensus about the ideal age for a myringoplasty in children. In this retrospective study, we study our own series to characterize different prognostic factors to answer questions/dilemmas such as when to carry out surgery in a child with an ear drum perforation, when to postpone surgery or when to use a different technique to improve the outcome after tympanoplasty. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on charts of 97 children who underwent a myringoplasty. The same surgeon (IF) treated all included children and with the same classical surgical te

Clinical and morphological results of xenografts to use in myringoplasty.

The main aim of our study was to study morphological state of the autograft from the fascia of the temporal muscle in myringoplasty. Until now, there is no consensus on issue of which fabrics are more suitable for use in the eardrum. We decided to study of use of an autograft from the fascia of the temporal muscle for myringoplasty in rabbits in the experiment, and in patients with chronic dry mesotympanitis. An electron microscopic examination of the fascia taken immediately, after 10, 20 min and 1 h after sampling. It was found that there are no gross destructive changes in the fascia struct

The outcomes of endoscopic myringoplasty: elevating a tympanomeatal flap or not.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the differences between the no tympanomeatal flap approach and the tympanomeatal flap approach in endoscopic myringoplasty. METHOD: A total of 132 patients with tympanic membrane perforation were randomly divided into two groups: the no tympanomeatal flap approach group (group A, 56 ears) and the tympanomeatal flap approach group (group B, 76 ears). A comparison between the two groups was made. RESULTS: The average operation time of group A was 36.00 ± 5.24 minutes, which was significantly shorter than that of group B, which was 43.89 ± 4.57 mi

Effectiveness of myringoplasty in patients with eosinophilic otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether myringoplasty can be an effective tool to control eosinophilic otitis media and improve hearing. METHODS: Severity scores for patients with eosinophilic otitis media with or without myringoplasty were retrospectively analyzed. Surgical outcomes were assessed and compared to those of patients with control: chronic otitis media with tympanic membrane perforation. RESULTS: The average eosinophilic otitis media severity score for the patients with myringoplasty was significantly lower after than before surgery (P = 0.004), although the score for the group without

A new graft material for myringoplasty: bacterial cellulose.

We aimed to determine the success rate of bacterial cellulose (BC) myringoplasty in tympanic membrane (TM) perforation. We reviewed the clinical records of 12 patients (16 ears) who underwent BC myringoplasty for long-standing TM perforations (>6 months) between March 2012 and January 2015. The mean duration of postoperative follow-up was 12.8 (range 6-24) months. In all patients, the perforation involved less than 50 % of the tympanic membrane, and the air-bone gap was ≤30 dB on the operative side. The age, gender, preoperative air average, bone average, air-bone gap, perforation size and loc

Butterfly myringoplasty for total, subtotal, and annular perforations.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The inlay "butterfly" cartilage tympanoplasty was first described as a treatment for small, central ear drum perforations. This technique can also be applied in large, marginal perforations, whereas the cartilage graft is anchored on the bony annulus. The aim of this study was to present the technique, to evaluate the results of butterfly tympanoplasty in marginal perforations, and to compare with the results of butterfly tympanoplasty in patients with nonmarginal perforations. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: The files of patients who underwent inlay

[How to raise efficacy of myringoplasty in extensive defects].

A comparative trial of miringoplasty efficacy with or without application of biosynthetic wound cover Biocom-1 was performed in 82 patients with sub- and total chronic defects or acute traumatic rupture of the tympanic membrane (58 and 24 patients, respectively). Better clinico-morphological and functional results were achieved in patients treated with application of Biocom-1 (p<0.05). Their stay in hospital was also shorter. Biocom-1 not only provides stable position of the neotympanic membrane but also protects against secondary infection.

Myringoplasty for the anterior perforation: experience with the Kerr flap.

Surgical closure of the anteriorly located tympanic membrane perforation can present a problem. The lack of anterior support for the graft frequently leads to graft failure if an underlay method is used whereas anterior blunting is a complication of onlay techniques in this situation. The experience with the Kerr flap, an underlay graft fashioned to include a tab of fascia which is placed laterally under the annulus and the anterior meatal skin, is presented. This method gave a 97.5 percent closure rate with no cases of anterior marginal blunting and a mean auditory threshold gain of 8.5 dB (9
