Tissue distribution and effects of heat treatments on the content of domoic acid in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis.

The effect of heat treatment on domoic acid (DA) content in soft tissues of mussels Mytilus edulis was investigated using high performance liquid chromatography. DA concentrations in whole flesh, hepatopancreas and tissue remainder were measured in fresh, steamed and autoclaved mussel flesh. Relative decreases in DA and tissue fluid following heat treatments of whole flesh were similar resulting in approximately equal concentrations of DA pre- and post-treatment. DA concentration decreased in the hepatopancreas and increased in tissue remainder suggesting some organ disruption of mussels durin

Isolation and primary culture of gill and digestive gland cells from the common mussel Mytilus edulis.

As the marine mussel Mytilus edulis is commonly used as a sentinel species, it would be useful to develop a primary culture of the target organs most often in contact with the marine environment. This study reports an improved method for dissociating the digestive gland and gills of M. edulis and considers the effect of mussel storage on cell viability and functionality before culture initiation. Viability and enzymatic activities such as those of esterase and peroxidase were monitored by flow cytometry, a sensitive, objective technique allowing large volumes of cells to be counted within a sh

Effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on the pallial fluid buffering capacity of the marine mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Pallial fluid buffering capacity of the sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was investigated to establish the potential of this biological parameter to serve as a biomarker. Four groups of 15 animals were used in a 72-h toxicity test. Group 1, the aerobic control group, was placed in a filtered aerated natural seawater aquarium. Groups 2-4 were subjected to hypoxic conditions by removal from water after animals were injected with a single dose of the following: group 2 (anaerobic control) was administered 10 microl of UV-treated filtered natural seawater; group 3 (anaerobic solvent control) w

Effects of the antineoplastic drug cyclophosphamide on the biochemical responses of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis under different temperatures.

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an antineoplastic drug widely used in chemotherapy treatments with high consumption rates and that has been detected in the aquatic environment. After being released into the aquatic environment, CP may cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms since antineoplastics are well-known cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic and teratogenic drugs. Moreover, predicted environmental changes, such as the temperature rising, may alter the impacts caused by CP on organisms. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the effects caused by CP chronic exposure in the mussel Mytilus galloprov

Molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of temperature increase on Mytilus sp. and their hybrids at early larval stages.

The present work aims to investigate the effects of water temperature increase on Mytilus galloprovincilis and Mytilus edulis pure larvae (PG, PE) and their hybrids (HFG, HFE). D-larvae were maintained at 18 °C or exposed to a higher temperature of 22 °C for 48 h. Initially, Embryotoxicity test was evaluated. Second, a transcriptomic analysis using a recently developed microarray platform was applied to determine the main biological processes involved in early life stages responses to temperature increase. Finally, an immunofluorescence investigation was performed to bridge the gap between tra

Effects of a common pharmaceutical, atorvastatin, on energy metabolism and detoxification mechanisms of a marine bivalve Mytilus edulis.

Biologically active compounds from pharmaceuticals cause concern due to their common occurrence in water and sediments of urbanized coasts and potential threat to marine organisms. Atorvastatin (ATO), a globally prescribed drug, is environmentally stable and bioavailable to marine organisms; however, the physiological and toxic effects of this drug on ecologically important coastal species are yet to be elucidated. We studied the effect of ATO (˜1.2 μg L-1) on bioenergetics (including whole-organism and mitochondrial respiration, as well as tissue energy reserves and mRNA expression of genes i

Sublethal impact of short term exposure to the organophosphate pesticide azamethiphos in the marine mollusc Mytilus edulis.

Concern has been raised that the increased use of pesticides in intensive aquaculture practices may cause adverse sublethal effects to non-target aquatic species. Azamethiphos is an organophosphate (OP) pesticide used to combat sea lice infestations in farmed salmonids. Here, the sublethal impact on the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, of short term exposure to azamethiphos was determined. The testing regime included biomarkers of exposure (acetylcholinesterase activity), cytotoxicity (neutral red retention), immune function (phagocytic index) and physiological condition (feeding rate). The distri

An ecotoxicological protocol with caged mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, for monitoring the impact of an offshore platform in the Adriatic Sea.

An ecotoxicological protocol with caged mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, was developed to evaluate the potential impact of an offshore gas platform in the central Adriatic Sea. Reference organisms were collected on a seasonal basis from an unpolluted site and transplanted for four weeks in both the sampling area and to the investigated platform. Chemical analyses of trace metals in mussel tissues were integrated with a multi-biomarker approach for the early detection of biological responses at several cellular targets. Induction of metallothioneins, peroxisomal proliferation and activity of

Uptake and effects of the cypermethrin-containing sea lice treatment Excis in the marine mussel, Mytilus edulis.

Wild and farmed mussels, Mytilus edulis, coexist with salmon farms in Scottish sea lochs. A synthetic pyrethroid, cypermethrin, is licensed for use on fish farms to control sea lice infestations as a formulation called Excis. In this study, uptake of cypermethrin from Excis exposure is investigated through the use of gas chromatography with mass-spectrometry. The effects of Excis on mussels are also examined by measuring the neutral red retention time of lysosomes, aerial survival and shell closure. The isomeric ratios of cis:trans cypermethrin measured in mussels are around 80:20; a marked in

Food ration affects mRNA processing, translation, proteostasis, and cytoskeletal responses during heat shock in Mytilus californianus.

PURPOSE: Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are a heterogeneous group of cell-derived membranous nanoparticles involved in several physiopathological processes. EVs play a crucial role in the definition of the extracellular microenvironment through the transfer of their cargo. Psoriasis is a prototypical chronic inflammatory disease characterized by several secreted mediators, among which antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered pivotal in the development of the psoriatic inflammatory microenvironment. The role of EVs in the pathogenesis of psoriasis has not been elucidated yet, even if emerging

Bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, immune disruption, and metabolic alterations in Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to nano-copper oxide.

Nano‑copper oxide (CuO NPs), as a highly promising antibacterial agent in aquaculture, has demonstrated excellent performance against pathogens affecting cultured organisms. However, its application is accompanied by potential toxicity risks to both the cultured organisms and the entire aquatic ecosystem. In this study, CuO NPs was synthesised using a sodium hypophosphite liquid-phase reduction method, and then a toxicity experiment was conducted using 50 μg/L CuO NPs in M. galloprovincialis. Multiple endpoints at Cu distribution, enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation degree, immune-related gene

Butyltin residues in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and arkshells (Scapharca broughtonii) collected from Korean coastal waters.

Butyltin compounds (BTs) including tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, di- (DBT) and mono-butyltin (MBT), were determined in bivalves such as blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and arkshells (Scapharca broughtonii) collected from Korean coastal waters. BTs were detected in all the blue mussels and arkshells analyzed. The concentrations of total butyltin (sigmaBTs: MBT + DBT + TBT) in blue mussels and arkshells ranged from 49 to 2500 ng/g and 29 to 87 ng/g wet weight, respectively. Higher concentrations of BTs were found in blue mussels collected from Okpo and Kohyonsong Bays and Jangsen

How the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis responds to multiple environmental challenges: Vibrio splendidus and hydrocarbon mixture.

Marine organisms are exposed to a wide range of environmental stressors and must develop adaptive responses to survive. This study investigated how Mytilus galloprovincialis responds to chemical and biological stress, both separately and simultaneously. Mussels were exposed for 4 days to a hydrocarbon mixture (diesel + oil engine) and then injected with Vibrio splendidus. Six hours post-injection, responses were assessed by measuring phagocytosis, several immune-related enzymes (lysozyme, phenoloxidase, glutathione peroxidase) and chaperonins (HSP70, HSC70) activities. The contact with the pat

Ecotoxicological effects of deep-sea sediments from polymetallic nodule fields in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Deep-sea mining (DSM) has the potential to become the next global scale extractive industry. Besides directly removing habitat in the area where the ores will be collected, DSM activities in the deep seafloor are likely to cause a plume of sediments. This sediments plume may also affect the fauna in the surrounding areas of the mining site. In this context, this work assesses the ecotoxicological effects of deep-sea sediments from polymetallic nodule fields, collected in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), Pacific Ocean, in the coastal mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were exposed for

First report of Hexamita nelsoni in blue mussel (Mytilus edulis): morphology, phylogeny, and host-parasite interaction.

Bivalve diseases caused by protozoan parasitic infection are monitored by coordinated surveillance programs across European member countries. However, these routine monitoring of bivalve health only survey a few relatively well-known parasites, which may leave undetected a range of less known opportunistic protozoan agents. Under increased stress, notably due to shifting environmental conditions affecting water quality and nutrient access, these opportunistic parasites may turn into pathogens impacting reproduction or growth and therefore decreasing the success and future development of aquacu

Elucidating venlafaxine metabolism in the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) through combined targeted and non-targeted approaches.

Exposure of aquatic organisms to antidepressants is currently well documented, while little information is available on how wild organisms cope with exposure to these pharmaceutical products. Studies on antidepressant metabolism in exposed organisms could generate information on their detoxification pathways and pharmacokinetics. The goal of this study was to enhance knowledge on the metabolism of venlafaxine (VEN)-an antidepressant frequently found in aquatic ecosystems-in Mytilus galloprovincialis, a bivalve that is present worldwide. Trans-Atlantic Distribution and Introgression as Inferred from Single Nucleotide Polymorphism: Mussels Mytilus and Environmental Factors.

Large-scale climate changes influence the geographic distribution of biodiversity. Many taxa have been reported to extend or reduce their geographic range, move poleward or displace other species. However, for closely related species that can hybridize in the natural environment, displacement is not the only effect of changes of environmental variables. Another option is subtler, hidden expansion, which can be found using genetic methods only. The marine blue mussels Mytilus are known to change their geographic distribution despite being sessile animals. In addition to natural dissemination at

Integrated assessment of bioplastic materials effects on microbial communities and macroinvertebrate model, Mytilus galloprovincialis, in marine ecosystems.

The increasing use of biopolymer derivatives raises concerns about their actual environmental sustainability, which remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we adopted an integrated approach combining microbial and ecotoxicological perspectives to evaluate their impact in marine ecosystems. We investigated the plastisphere composition of conventional petroleum-based High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polyhydroxybutyric acid (PHB), and polylactic acid (PLLA) scaffolds after 60 days of exposition in marine ecosystem or microcosm, by high throughput metagen
