Twelve myxosporean species of the family Myxobolidae infecting freshwater fishes of the River Nile, Egypt, with the description of four novel species.

Myxosporidian parasites infecting fish are very dangerous parasites causing severe damage to a large number of economically important fishes especially in aquaculture. A survey of myxosporean parasites infecting four species of fishes from the River Nile in Egypt is conducted. One hundred and ninety-five out of 316 fish specimens with a percentage of 61.7% were found to be naturally infected with these parasites. Light microscopic examination of different tissues revealed the presence of 12 myxosporean species belonging to the family Myxobolidae. Four of the identified species are novel and th

Taxonomy and histopathology of Myxobolus mirandensis n. sp. parasite of the gills of Salminus brasiliensis from the Brazilian Pantanal wetland.

Myxozoa are a highly diverse group of cnidarian parasites, with approximately 3070 described species. This study describes a new species, Myxobolus mirandensis n. sp., based on morphological, molecular, and histopathological analyses. The parasite was found in Salminus brasiliensis (dourado), one of the largest and most economically and recreationally important freshwater fish species in South America. Specimens of S. brasiliensis were collected from the Miranda River in the Brazilian Pantanal, with a prevalence of the infection of 63.6 % (7/11). White and elongated plasmodia were observed in

Co-infection of Candidatus Piscichlamydia Trichopodus (Order Chlamydiales) and Henneguya sp. (Myxosporea, Myxobolidae) in Snakeskin Gourami Trichopodus pectoralis (Regan 1910).

The present study describes a simultaneous infection of a novel Chlamydia-like organism (CLO) with a Myxozoa parasite, Henneguya sp. in snakeskin gourami Trichopodus pectoralis in Thailand. A new CLO is proposed "Candidatus Piscichlamydia trichopodus" (CPT) based on 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis. Systemic intracellular CPT infection was confirmed by histological examination, in situ hybridization, PCR assay, and sequencing of 16S rRNA. This novel pathogen belongs to the order Chlamydiales but differs in certain aspects from other species. The histopathological changes associated with CPT infe

Molecular detection of myxosporean parasites in human fecal samples associated with foodborne illness.

In 2011, Kudoa septempunctata (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Multivalvulida) was recognized as a causative agent of foodborne illness in Japan. Since then, studies have conducted surveillance for this parasite in flounder, a primary vehicle for foodborne outbreaks, and have reported the detection of K. septempunctata in fecal samples from patients. Although sporadic outbreaks suspected to be associated with the consumption of fish other than flounder have also been reported, information on examination of patient feces or leftover fish in such outbreaks remains limited. In this study, we investigated th

Novel diversity and distributions of myxozoans in amphibians from Ecuador with the description of a new species of Cystodiscus.

Among parasites with vertebrate hosts, myxozoans (Cnidaria) remain some of the least studied both taxonomically and geographically. We conducted the first reported surveys for myxozoans from amphibian hosts in Ecuador at two localities: a mid-elevation cloud forest on the Chocó region (western slopes of the Andes) and a lowland Amazonian tropical forest, east of the Andes. We sampled 177 gall bladders and 17 kidneys across the surveys. We found no evidence of myxozoans in the cloud forest site. Myxozoans of the genus Cystodiscus were encountered in the gallbladders of multiple amphibian specie

Phylogenetic analysis of Ellipsomyxa species (Myxosporea) and description of Ellipsomyxa gordeyi n. sp. from the gall bladder of mullets (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) in Nha Trang Bay of the East Sea, Vietnam.

The coastal waters of Vietnam are home to a wide diversity of fishes, but the parasite diversity of these potential hosts is much less well characterized. To begin addressing this knowledge gap, we carried out surveys of myxozoan parasites in fishes collected from Nha Trang Bay in Vietnam's East Sea in 2018-2019. Mugilid fishes were collected in March-April 2018, January-February 2019, and November-December 2019, and examined for myxozoans. Myxospores consistent with those of the genus Ellipsomyxa were found in the gall bladder of four mullet species, and we thoroughly characterized those from

Locally extensive meningoencephalitis caused by Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarchi) in a zebra shark.

Scuticociliatosis, caused by ciliated protozoa in the subclass Scuticociliatia of the phylum Ciliophora, can cause fatal disease in teleost fish species. However, information on scuticociliatosis in elasmobranchs is still scarce. In this report, we describe a case of locally extensive meningoencephalitis caused by Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarchi) in a 2 yr old captive zebra shark Stegostoma fasciatum. Granulocytic meningoencephalitis was observed through histological assessment. Inflammation was confined to the ventral aspect of the brain with a large number of ciliated prot

Unravelling the intricate effects of metal contamination on pathogen infection risk and fish health.

Metal contamination and pathogens often co-occur in freshwater ecosystems, yet their combined effects on wildlife health remain poorly understood. We investigated whether metal contamination modulates disease risk and fish health in brown trout (Salmo trutta, Linnaeus, 1758) exposed to the pathogen Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Canning, 1999), responsible for the Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD). We sampled 40 wild trout populations along gradients of metal contamination (copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, lead) and pathogen infection in French Pyrenean rivers. Using Structural Equat

Ultrastructural and molecular characteristics of Kudoa crenimugilis n. sp. infecting intestinal smooth muscle of fringelip mullet Crenimugil crenilabis in the Red Sea.

This study describes infection of intestinal smooth muscle in fringelip mullets Crenimugil crenilabis with Kudoa crenimugilis n. sp. Of 30 individuals sampled from the Red Sea off Saudi Arabia, 6 (20%) were infected. Ovoid plasmodia (279-412 × 157-295 µm) in the smooth muscle of the intestine were packed with only mature myxospores with 4 valves. Specifically, light and transmission electron microscopy revealed quadrate myxospores with 4 equal, rounded, spore valves uniting at thin delicate suture lines. The mature myxospores were 8 (7-9) µm long, 5.2 (5-6) µm thick and 7.8 (7-8) µm wide. The

Hints on T cell responses in a fish-parasite model: Enteromyxum leei induces differential expression of T cell signature molecules depending on the organ and the infection status.

BACKGROUD: Enteromyxum leei is a myxozoan parasite that produces a slow-progressing intestinal disease. This parasite invades the paracellular space of the intestinal epithelium and progresses from the posterior to the anterior intestine. The aim of the present study was to gain insights into fish T cell responses in the gilthead sea bream-E. leei infection model using a PCR-array with 30 signature molecules for different leukocyte responses in head kidney, spleen, anterior and posterior intestine. RESULTS: The PCR-array results suggest that E. leei induced migration of T cells from head kidn

New pathological condition in cultured mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus: histopathological, ultrastructural and molecular studies.

Mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus is a native fish species in Western Australia, for which aquaculture production has recently been developed. A single cohort was stocked in a cage offshore at Geraldton, Western Australia, at a water depth of 6 m. Fish appeared healthy before stocking. Routine histological analysis was carried out from 10 mo post stocking and until completion of harvest (about 2.5 yr post stocking). No gross pathology was evident. Microscopically, however, granulomatous lesions were present in the kidneys of almost 100% of the fish examined. Enclosed in the granuloma was an aggre
