Individual differences in revising the life story-Personality and event characteristics influence change in the autobiographical meaning of life events.

OBJECTIVE: Repeated autobiographical narratives have recently received increased attention as measures of the stability of narrative identity. We propose that one way to map change in life narratives is to rate the degree to which the autobiographical meaning of renarrated events changes. We aimed to test the influence of age, traits (openness, extraversion), and event characteristics on how much autobiographical meaning changes. METHOD: In waves 3 and 4 of the MainLife study, 123 participants (15-72 years) narrated their lives twice, 4 years apart. Life events that were told both times were

The Excluded Voices from Africa's Sahel: Alternative Meanings of Health in Narratives of Resistance to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in Northern Nigeria.

Although previous inquiry into resistance to the polio vaccines in northern Nigeria has been launched from several disciplines, inquiry has been limited to the 2003 revolt and has rarely been informed by theory. This study drew on the culture-centered approach to health communication to argue that the exclusion of marginalized communities from decision-making by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) resulted in a vaccine resistance which found expression in health activism that engaged the local news media. To recover the excluded voices, this study examined community members' narrati

Liminality: A major category of the experience of cancer illness.

Narrative analysis is well established as a means of examining the subjective experience of those who suffer chronic illness and cancer. In a study of perceptions of the outcomes of treatment of cancer of the colon, we have been struck by the consistency with which patients record three particular observations of their subjective experience: (1) the immediate impact of the cancer diagnosis and a persisting identification as a cancer patient, regardless of the time since treatment and of the presence or absence of persistent or recurrent disease; (2) a state of variable alienation from social f

From involvement to effects: Current research in narrative persuasion.

People regularly engage with narratives, ranging from literary stories to popular media. Such narratives can influence real-world attitudes and behaviors, particularly if individuals are transported or immersed in the narrative world, and if they identify with narrative characters. The current article provides an overview of recent advances in understanding narrative processes and effects. Research has provided greater understanding of transportability (individual differences in the tendency to become transported) across cultures, the role of narrative content variations such as framing and na

Emotional Dialogue Predicts the Success of Prestige Television Episodes.

Whether a narrative succeeds in satisfying its audience is of paramount importance, but predicting this success is difficult. Although previous research has found that the textual characteristics of novels can predict how they are received, what about multimodal narratives like film and television? In a television show, the only text available is the dialogue, with so much of the story conveyed non-verbally (e.g., facial expressions and actions, cinematography, editing, music). Although dialogue is just one aspect of a television episode, might the emotional nature of the dialogue still be abl

Once upon a time: Narrative storytelling, hypnosis, and the brain.

The article explores the nature of narrative, its impact on key neural circuits in the brain, and the role of those activated circuits as drivers of hypnotically guided personal change. The author views clinical hypnosis as a form of interactive reciprocity that engages clients' neuroplastic potential (i.e. trance). This emergent potential is evoked during the therapeutic interaction between a client and clinician. Furthermore, the author describes clinical hypnosis as using forms of suggestion to facilitate change to the self-reinforcing narratives to which clients subscribe. Suggestions them

The use of arts-based methodologies and methods with young people with complex psychosocial needs: A systematic narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Arts-based methodologies and methods (ABM) can elicit rich and meaningful data with seldom-heard groups and empower participants in research. Young people with complex psychosocial needs could be better engaged in research using arts-based approaches to overcome communication and literacy issues as well as distrust of those with power, including researchers. A critical review of the use and impact of ABM among this population is timely. The purpose of this review is to synthesize and examine the experience and use of ABM with young people with complex psychosocial needs. METHODS:

How Does Nostalgia Conduce to Global Self-Continuity? The Roles of Identity Narrative, Associative Links, and Stability.

In five studies (N = 1,074), we examined the relation-both correlational and causal-between nostalgia, a sentimental longing for one's past, and global self-continuity (GSC), a sense of connection among past, present, and future selves. Furthermore, we addressed mechanisms underlying this relation. We asked, in particular, whether nostalgic individuals might achieve GSC by constructing a narrative to give meaning to life transitions (narrative), connecting to the past (associative links), or believing in a self that is resistant to change (stability). Nostalgia predicted (Studies 1-3) and caus

'The Internet Both Reassures and Terrifies': exploring the more-than-human worlds of health information using the story completion method.

Lay people are now encouraged to be active in seeking health and medical information and acting on it to engage in self-care and preventive health practices. Over the past three decades, digital media offering ready access to health information resources have rapidly expanded. In this article, I discuss findings from my study that sought to investigate health information practices by bringing together the social research method of story completion with more-than-human theory and postqualitative inquiry. Narratives of health, illness and embodiment are powerful ways to portray people's experien

From stereotyped recognition to situated meaning: university students' retrospective accounts of perceived schema revision in learning Jiaxing revolutionary heritage.

This qualitative interview study examines how university students retrospectively narrate perceived schema revision in learning Jiaxing revolutionary heritage, a politically and culturally saturated local heritage context associated with South Lake and the Red Boat. Schema revision was used as a sensitizing analytical lens rather than as a direct measure of cognitive change. Thirty Mandarin interview transcripts from students with varied learning experiences were analyzed through a hybrid deductive-inductive codebook thematic analysis conducted by three coders. Participants commonly recalled e

Narrative competence and internal state language of children with Asperger Syndrome and ADHD.

The central question of the present study was whether there are differences between children with Asperger Syndrome (AS), children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and healthy controls (HC) with respect to the organization of narratives and their verbalization of internal states. Oral narrations of a wordless picture book produced by 31 children (11 with AS, 9 with ADHD, 11 HC, aged 8-12) were analyzed regarding the following linguistic variables: story length, sentence structure and sentence complexity, coherence and cohesion of the stories, verbalization of the narrator's

Dreams of my daughter: an ectopic pregnancy.

Autoethnographic narrative, personal journal excerpts, and artifacts were employed to narrate the story of my ectopic pregnancy and experiences with the medical field. The name "Doctor" is invoked as a way of objectifying yet protecting the anonymity of the doctor who objectified and did not protect me. A methodological discussion of the following tensions in autoethnography is presented: intimacy/professionality, art/science, showing/explaining.

Investigating Narrative Performance in Children With Developmental Language Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Narrative assessment is one potentially underutilized and inconsistent method speech-language pathologists may use when considering a diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD). However, narration research encompasses many varied methodologies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to (a) investigate how various narrative assessment types (e.g., macrostructure, microstructure, and internal state language) differentiate children with typical development (TD) from children with DLD, (b) identify specific narrative assessment measures that result in greater group differe

'Hit me like a brick wall': women's accounts of balancing cancer survivorship with fertility concerns while dealing with gynaecological cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the impact of gynaecological cancer on women's expectations for motherhood, their concerns regarding their fertility, and how they negotiated these concerns in the survivorship context. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 42 Australian women with gynaecological cancer, aged between 27 to 53 years, who were on average five years post-diagnosis (range 1-10 years). Thematic discourse analysis, from a material-discursive-intrapsychic approach, was used to explore how women narrated their fertility-related concerns in the broader social and health
