Absent or hypoplastic nasal bone: What to tell the prospective parents?

BACKGROUND: Absent or hypoplastic nasal bone (AHNB) on first or second-trimester ultrasonography (USG) is an important soft marker of Down syndrome. However, due to its varied incidence in euploid and aneuploid fetuses, there is always a dilemma of whether to go for invasive fetal testing for isolated AHNB. This study aims to assess outcomes specifically within the context of Indian ethnicity women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study. All patients who reported with AHNB in the first- or second-trimester USG were included. Genetic counseling was done, and noninva

Three-Dimensional Arterial Distribution Over the Midline of the Nasal Bone.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive understanding of arterial variations around the midline of the nose is of great importance for the safety of filler injection. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to clearly define the 3-dimensional location of the arteries along the midline of the nasal bone. METHODS: The arterial structures overlapping the nasal bone along the midline were observed in 79 cadavers. RESULTS: The present study found that 0 to 3 named arteries per nose segment could be identified. All the arterial structures were located in or above the superficial musculoaponeurotic system layer

Olfactory Dysfunction and its Course in Patients With Nasal Bone Fracture.

PURPOSE: Nasal bone fractures are the most common facial bone fractures. Although olfactory dysfunction is one of the most common complications in patients with nasal bone fractures, few studies on olfactory dysfunction in nasal bone fractures have been reported. The authors attempted to find the frequency and course of olfactory dysfunction and hypothesize its mechanism in patients with nasal bone fractures. METHODS: Sixty-six patients who underwent closed reduction were examined using the Korean version of Sniffin' Sticks test (KVSS) II at preoperation, 1 month and 6 months postoperation. W

Comparison of the outcomes of nasal bone reduction using serial imaging.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone fractures are frequently encountered in clinical practice. Although fracture reduction is simple and correction requires a short operative time, low patient satisfaction and relatively high complication rates remain issues for many surgeons. These challenges may result from inaccuracies in fracture recognition and assessment or inappropriate surgical planning. Findings from immediate postoperative computed tomography (CT) scans and those performed at 4 to 6 weeks postoperatively were compared to evaluate the accuracy and outcomes of nasal fracture reduction. METHODS: Th

Nasal bone fractures and the use of radiographic imaging: An otolaryngologist perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To determine radiologic preferences of practicing otolaryngologists regarding isolated nasal bone fractures. STUDY DESIGN: An 8-question survey on isolated nasal bone fractures was designed. SETTING: Surveys were sent to all otolaryngology residency program directors for distribution among residents and faculty. Additional surveys were distributed to private practice otolaryngology groups. RESULTS: 140 physicians responded to the survey. 57% of the respondents were practicing otolaryngologists (75% with 10+ years of experience), while 43% of respondents were residents-in-training

Absence of nasal bone and brachydactyly: a probable new familial syndrome.

Brachydactyly is a relatively common congenital abnormality and can be associated with many other malformations. However, brachydactyly in association with absence of nasal bone is rare. Two Chinese siblings with a combination of nasal bone absence and brachydactyly are presented, apparently without other abnormalities. This combination of features do not fit into any previously described syndrome and we suggest that this case represents a new familial syndrome. Molecular genetics screening didn't revealed any specific pathogenic variants in the two siblings.

Comparison of ultrasonography with computed tomography in the diagnosis of nasal bone fractures.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare ultrasonography with CT in the diagnosis of nasal bone fractures. METHODS: 40 patients (9 female and 31 male) with mid-facial fractures, which were suspected nasal bone fractures, were included. All of the patients had mid-facial CT images. Ultrasonography with a 7.5 MHz transducer (Aloka 3500, Tokyo, Japan) was used to evaluate the nasal bone fractures. All of the sonograms were compared with CT findings for sensitivity, specificity and predictive values. A χ(2) test was applied to the data to assess statistical significance. RESULTS: CT diagn

Sonic rhinoplasty: sculpting the nasal dorsum with the ultrasonic bone aspirator.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Rhinoplasty often requires precise, graded bone removal without damage to surrounding nasal soft tissue and mucosa. Unfortunately, current techniques are associated with decreased visualization, heat generation, mechanical chatter, and lack of surgical precision with resultant soft tissue injury. We introduce a novel technique to sculpt the nasal dorsum in a precise fashion with the ultrasonic bone aspirator and delineate its advantages over conventional techniques. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: The SONOPET ultrasonic bone aspirator (Mutoh Co., Ltd

First-trimester nasal bone evaluation for aneuploidy in the general population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of fetal nasal bone imaging at 10 3/7 to 13 6/7 weeks as a screening tool for aneuploidy, in a prospective multicenter trial. METHODS: Unselected patients from the general population with viable singleton pregnancies at 10 3/7 to 13 6/7 weeks were recruited at 15 U.S. centers. All had screening with nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound by specially trained sonographers. In the last 8 months of this trial, first trimester nasal bone evaluation was added to the screening protocol. Nasal bones were described as present, absent, or unable to determine. RESULTS: A t

Use of nasally administered salmon calcitonin in preventing bone loss.

This article reviews several of our studies in which we evaluated the effect of nasal salmon calcitonin in preventing bone loss in normal women just after menopause. In the first study, after treatment with nasal salmon calcitonin, bone loss stopped and, in fact, actually increased slightly. In contrast, the placebo group continued to lose bone mass. On the other hand, bone mass in the forearm, which has more cortical bone, showed no change in response to nasal salmon calcitonin. The effect of salmon calcitonin nasal spray in women with established osteoporosis has also been studied. In one st

Nasal obstruction promotes alveolar bone destruction in the juvenile rat model.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Nasal obstruction leads to oral breathing and consequently hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of hypoxia on inflammatory response and the effect on alveolar bone development in a rat model in which mouth breathing was induced by nasal obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral nasal obstruction was performed by injecting a Merocel sponge into the nasal cavity of 8-week-old Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. After 3 and 6 weeks of nasal obstruction, rats were sacrificed, the organs were weighed, and the changes in mandibular bone quality were exami

Efficacy of biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam for packing nasal bone fractures.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone fracture is the most common traumatic disease among facial bone fractures. General treatment of this trauma is closed reduction, followed by intranasal packing. Vaseline or Furacin roll gauze, and Merocel are commonly used packing materials, but the pain produced while removing the packing is fearful for the patients. To compensate for this shortcoming, there has been an increased use of biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam (SPF) recently. We performed a retrospective review to analyze the effectiveness of SPF after the closed reduction of nasal bone fracture. PATI
